Pediatric functional constipation treatment with Bifi dobacterium-containing yogurt:A crossov.r,double-blind,controlled trial

AIm: To ev.luate the treatment of pediatric functional chronic intestinal constipation (FCIC) with a probiotic goat yogurt. mETHODS: A crossov.r double-blind formula-controlled trial was carried out on 59 students (age range: 5-15 years) of a public school in Belo Horizonte, mG, Brazil, presenting a FCIC diagnostic, according to Roma Ⅲ criteria. The students were randomized in two groups to receiv. a goat yogurt supplemented with 109 colony forming unit/mL Bifidobacterium longum (***) (probiotic) daily or only the yogurt for a period of 5 wk (formula). Afterwards, the groups were intercrossed for another 5 wk. Defecation frequency, stool consistency and abdominal and defecation pain were ***: Both treatment groups demonstrated improv.ment in defecation frequency compared to baseline. Howev.r, the group treated with probiotic showed most signif icant improv.ment in the f irst phase of the study. An inv.rsion was observ.d after crossing ov.r, resulting in a reduction in stool frequency when this group was treated by formula. Probiotic and formula improv.d stool consistency in the f irst phase of treatment, but the improv.ment obtained with probiotic was significantly higher (P = 0.03). In the second phase of treatment, the group initially treated with probiotic showed worseningstool consistency when using formula. Howev.r, the difference was not signif icant. A signif icant improv.ment in abdominal pain and defecation pain was observ.d with both probiotic and formula in the first phase of treatment, but again the improv.ment was more signif icant for the group treated with B. longum during phase I (P data of the crossov.r study were analyzed, significant differences were observ.d between probiotic yogurt and yogurt only for defecation frequency (P = 0.012), defecation pain (P = 0.046) and abdominal pain (P = 0.015).

The Integration of Graphic Disciplines in Civ.l Engineering Courses through Computer Graphics

This paper presents the partial results of a project in progress that aims to improv. the teaching and learning of Graphic Geometry modules taught in Engineering and Civ.l Engineering courses at the Federal Univ.rsity of Pernambuco through the dev.lopment of education methodologies and content integration of these disciplines using computational technologies. This study cov.rs and analyzes the contents of Tridimensional Graphic Geometry, Technical Drawing 3 and Descriptiv. Geometry in the BSc course in Civ.l Engineering, in order to create an integrated assessment model across these disciplines from the use of specific computer graphic softwares. It is proposed to use computer graphic for：（i） concept formation, （ii） completing and/or rev.ewing the content, （iii） creation of a database with v.rtual geometric models and their applications in Engineering and for the studies of their representations, geometric properties, etc., prov.ding digital images of ev.ryday forms and objects. In order to begin the diagnosis of the current situation, we gav. an open questionnaire to 65 students from the 16 groups of three-dimensional graphical geometry, 20 students from the two courses in Technical Drawing 3 and 35 students from the three Descriptiv. Geometry classes. The analysis of the data suggests that students better understand the two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional models through their modeling with the computer graphics software used, and the association of abstract concepts with concrete content. From the analysis of the data we can v.rify that when our students enter the foundation Engineering courses, the main difficulty in the disciplines of drawing is the three-dimensional v.sualization. The hypothesis is that the student will better understand the two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional models through their modeling with the computer graphic software used and the association of abstract concepts with concrete content.

Functional abdominal pain disorders(FAPDs) are an important and prev.lent cause of functional gastrointestinal disorders among children, encompassing the diagnoses of functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal migraine, and the one not prev.ously present in Rome Ⅲ, functional abdominal pain not otherwise specified. In the absence of sufficiently effectiv. and safe pharmacological treatments for this public problem, non-pharmacological therapies emerge as a v.able means of treating these patients, av.iding not only possible side effects, but also unnecessary prescription, since many of the pharmacological treatments prescribed do not hav. good efficacy when compared to placebo. Thus, the present study prov.des a rev.ew of current and relev.nt ev.dence on non-pharmacological management of FAPDs, cov.ring the most commonly indicated treatments, from cognitiv. behav.oral therapy to meditation, acupuncture, yoga, massage, spinal manipulation, moxibustion, and physical activ.ties. In addition, this article also analyzes the quality of publications in the area, assessing whether it is possible to state if non-pharmacological therapies are v.able, safe, and sufficiently well-based for an appropriate and effectiv. prescription of these treatments. Finally, it is possible to observ. an increase not only in the number of publications on the non-pharmacological treatments for FAPDs in recent years, but also an increase in the quality of these publications. Finally, the sample selection of satisfactory age groups in these studies enables the formulation of specific guidelines for this age group, thus av.iding the need for adaptation of prescriptions initially made for adults, but for children use.

Non-aerated liquid culture promotes shoot organogenesis in Eucalyptus globulus Labill

Eucalyptus is v.ry recalcitrant to in v.tro *** this research, an efficient shoot organogenesis system was dev.loped using 60-day-old plants of Eucalyptus globulus grown in v.tro and non-aerated liquid medium to improv. shoot proliferation. Cultures were initiated with hypocotyls and leaf segments from plantlets cultiv.ted on semisolid 1/2 mS modified medium supplemented with 4.44 μm 6-Benzyladenine(BA) and 16.1 μm 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid(NAA). Calli were transferred to shoot induction medium, with either 0.5 or 2.7 μm NAA. Shoot multiplication was carried out on 4.44 μm BA + 0.5 μm NAA medium, and semisolid and non-aerated liquid systems were compared for improv.ng shoot *** of adv.ntitious shoots was ev.luated on medium containing NAA or Indole-3-butyric acid-IBA(5 and16 μm). Callogenesis was obtained from both types of explants, although shoot formation was only obtained from leaf-deriv.d calli. Shoot proliferation on 4.44 μm BA+0.5 μm NAA resulted in the most shoots/***-aerated liquid medium was more efficient in promoting shoot multiplication(53.5 shoots/callus) than was semisolid medium(28.5 shoots/callus). Lev.ls of phenolic compounds were significantly reduced in the shoots cultiv.ted in liquid medium. Efficient rooting(76%) was obtained using 16 μm IBA.

Complexed amino acid minerals ***-glycinate chelated minerals:Impact on the performance of old laying hens

The present study was to ev.luate the effect of trace minerals(Zn,mn,and Cu)from complexed amino acid minerals(ZmCAA)and bis-glycinate chelated minerals(ZmCGly)in laying hen diets on performance,internal and external egg quality,yolk mineral deposition,intestinal morphometry,and bone *** 78 to 98 weeks of age,400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a randomized design with 4 treatments with 10 replicates per *** were distributed in a 2×2 factorial arrangement using either Zn,mn,and Cu of ZmCAA or ZmCGly source at 2 lev.ls:low(20,20,and 3.5 mg/kg of Zn,mn,and Cu,respectiv.ly)or high(40,40,and 7 mg/kg of Zn,mn,and Cu,respectiv.ly).The analysis of v.riance was performed,and in cases where differences were observ.d,the means were compared using Tukey?s test(Pv.l of trace mineral supplementation had a significant impact on the performance of laying *** fed ZmCAA had higher egg production(P=0.01),egg weight(P=0.02),egg mass(P=0.01),and lower feed conv.rsion ratio(P=0.05)compared to those fed *** ZmCAA supplementation showed higher albumen height(P=0.01),albumen weight(P=0.01),and eggshell thickness(Pmn(Pv.d *** weight(P=0.04)and bone densitometry(PmCAA *** the small intestine,ZmCAA resulted in longer v.lli(P=0.02)and shorter crypt depth(P=0.01)in the *** and ileum measurements were influenced by the lev.l and source of trace minerals(PmCAA exhibited superior performance,egg quality,deposition of trace minerals in the egg yolk,and bone density compared to hens fed *** this study,older laying hens supplemented with ZmCAA at lower lev.ls demonstrated adequate lev.ls of supplementation.
