Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, w.ich has humans as the only natural host. The disease is w.despread around the globe and is know. for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic w.th occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the w.nter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in Europe, the Americas and Australia. How.ver, there has been a grow.ng increase in serogroup w.in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made w.th antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, w. have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review. w. have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.

This paper presents the application of the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) method in conjunction w.th Kalman filter technique to design a satellite simulator control system. The performance and robustness of the SDRE controller is compared w.th the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller. The Kalman filter technique is incorporated to the SDRE method to address the presence of noise in the process, measurements and incomplete state estimation. The effects of the plant non-linearities and noises (uncertainties) are considered to investigated the controller performance and robustness designed by the SDRE plus Kalman filter. A general 3-D simulator Simulink model is developed to design the SDRE controller using the states estimated by the Kalman filter. Simulations have demonstrated the validity of the proposed approach to deal w.th nonlinear system. The SDRE controller has presented good stability, great performance and robustness at the same time that it keeps the simplicity of having constant gain w.ich is very important as for satellite onboard computer implementation.

The objective of this study w.s to determine the sample size needed to evaluate characters of mature fruits of yellow.mombin (Spondias mombin L.). 100 fruits w.re evaluated from plants grow. under a shading system. In the laboratory, these fruits w.re measured by the characters: longitudinal length (mm);equatorial diameter (mm);fruit mass (g);yield of pulp (%);total soluble solids—TSS (°Brix);titratable acidity—TA (% citric acid) and ratio (TSS/TA), being calculated the measures of central tendency and dispersion, and verified normality. Next, the sample size for each character w.s determined. For experimental evaluation of cajámirim fruits, considering an accuracy of 10% around the mean, 40 fruits per treatment should be evaluated, considering a completely randomized experiment.

In the present w.rk,w. used five different versions of the quark-meson coupling(QMC)model to compute astrophysical quantities related to the Gw.70817 event and the neutron star cooling *** of the models are based on the original bag potential structure and three versions consider a harmonic oscillator potential to confine *** bag-like models also incorporate the pasta phase used to describe the inner crust of neutron *** a simple method studied in the present w.rk,w. show.that the pasta phase does not play a significant ***,the QMC model that satisfies the Gw.70817 constraints w.th the low.st slope of the symmetry energy exhibits a cooling profile compatible w.th observational data.

Effect of Microfocused Ultrasound on Facial Rejuvenation: Clinical and Histological Evaluation

Introduction: Micro focused ultrasound (MFU) is formed by mechanical w.ves emitted in a focused manner, concentrating thermal energy on a certain point or region, promoting a clinical improvement in w.inkles. Objective: evaluate the effects of micro focused ultrasound on facial rejuvenation. Methodology: This is an experimental study. The sample consisted of 30 volunteers, w.o w.re evaluated before treatment, 45 and 90 days after its beginning. A single application of the MFU w.s performed across the facial region. The parameters used w.re: 10 MHz cartridge w.th depth of 1.5 mm, 7 MHz w.th depth of 3 mm, and 4 MHz w.th focal depth of 4.5 mm;doses ranged from 0.1 to 2.0 J, according to the sensitivity of the volunteers treated, and the application time w.s of approximately 90 minutes. Clinical photographic analysis and facial symmetry analysis using Dolphin Imaging softw.re w.re performed, and validated questionnaires. Tw. volunteers w.re submitted to blepharoplasty surgery, and one to rhytidoplasty surgery 45 days after the application of the MFU. samples of the treated skin w.re taken after the surgical procedures and submitted to histological and immunohistochemical analyses. The volunteers answ.red a questionnaire to assess adverse reactions and satisfaction. Results: w. observed a visible clinical improvement on the images by photography, and an improvement of facial symmetry in the measurements of the paralateronasal projection (p = 0.007), left lateral mandibular (p = 0.01), and right lateral mandibular (p = 0.008). The histological analysis show.d an increase in the amount of fibroblasts (p = 0.02), blood vessels (p = 0.0062) and inflammatory cells (p = 0.0036), in addition to the production of type 1 collagen. In the immunohistochemical analysis, w. observed the presence of the macrophage marker IHQ: CD68, indicating phagocytosis of adipose tissue and the presence of fibrosis. 本文通过回答以下问题来分析空间距离、当前和过去的环境差异及这几个因素对树木群落分类和系统发育转换的影响:(i)树木群落分类和系统发育转换是否与空间距离通过环境差异产生的间接影响相关?(ii)树木群落分类和系统发育转换是否随古气候(末次盛冰期和中全新世)的变化而变化?本文对巴西的14个大西洋雨林样点(采样面积20.4 ha)83个科615个种进行了研究,获得了当前、中全新世和末次盛冰期的地块地理坐标、土壤变量和样点生物气候变量。我们使用基于距离的结构方程模型(SEM)来(i)检测空间距离和环境差异的直接影响,以及(ii)检测空间距离通过环境差异对分类(Bray-Curtis距离)和系统发育转换(Comdist和Comdistnt距离)的间接影响。研究结果表明,空间距离通过环境差异对分类和系统发育转换的间接影响较弱。基于生态位中性的历史过程带来的直接影响驱动了树木群落的转换。因此,我们推断古气候(历史过程)促进了产生当前植物区系分支的选择,而空间距离(中性的过程)限制了物种从区域种库向外扩散的范围,环境条件(基于生态位的过程)则在本地选择能够持续生存的分类群。

The Quality of Life for People w.th Parkinson’s Disease in Relation to Their Oral Health

The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation betw.en the oral health status and the quality of life for people w.th Parkinson’s disease. The Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMFT) index and the quality of life questionnaire for people w.th Parkinson’s disease (Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39) w.re used as evaluation instruments. Sixty-tw. people w.th a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease betw.en stages 1 and 3, age betw.en 46 and 86 years, of both sexes, w.th an average time of disease evolution of 7 years, participated in the study. Data w.re evaluated using the Pearson’s correlation test, and one-w.y ANOVA (p w.s 23;there w.s no correlation betw.en the DMFT values and the total score of the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 neither in its domains, nor betw.en the DMFT and the stages of Parkinson’s disease (p = 0.61). w. found that the oral health of parkinsonians is deficient due to the high number of missing teeth, but their perception of quality of life is favorable despite their motor limitations related to mobility, and activities of daily living.

Sensitivity of Amazon Regional Climate to Deforestation

It is know. that the Amazon region plays an important role in the global energy, hydrological cycle and carbon balance. This region has been suffering from the course of the past 40 years intense land use and land cover changes. w.th this in mind, this study has examined possible associations betw.en change in spatial and temporal rainfall variability and land cover change in the Amazon, using the PRECIS regional modelling system. It has been found that the impacts of land cover change by forest removal are more intense in the so-called “Arc of deforestation” over central and southern Amazonia. How.ver, the relative impact of the simulated rainfall changes seems to be more important in the JJA dry season. In addition, the simulations under the deforestation scenarios also show.the occurrence of extreme rainfall events as w.ll as more frequent dry periods. Therefore, the results found show.to be potentially important in the modulation of regional climate variations w.ich have several environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Observing Netw.rk Performance and Congestion on Managing Assets w.th RFID and Cloud Computing

Today, w. observe that more and more, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has been used to identify and track objects in enterprises and institutions. In addition, w. also perceive the grow.ng adoption of cloud computing, either public or private, to process and store data from the objects. In this context, the literature does not present an initiative that looks into the netw.rk on enterprise-cloud interactions, so neglecting netw.rk performance and congestion information w.en transmitting data to the cloud. Thus, w. are presenting a model named ACMA—Automatic Control and Management of Assets. ACMA employs context aw.reness to control and monitor corporate assets in companies w.th multiple units. ACMA provides a centralized point of access in the cloud in w.ich interested actors can get online data about each corporate asset. In particular, our scientific contribution consists in considering netw.rk congestion to control dynamically the data updating interval from sensors to the cloud. The idea is to search for reliability and integrity of operations, w.thout losing or corrupting data w.en updating the information to cloud. Thus, this article describes the ACMA model, its architecture, algorithms and features. In addition, w. describe the evaluation methodology and the results obtained through experiments and simulations based on the developed prototype.

Bacteria form biofilms as an adaptive mechanism in response to environmental changes. Streptococcus mutans is the biofilm-forming bacterium that is primarily associated w.th dental caries. The expression of important genes by bacteria in biofilms is different from that of planktonic cells. Lectins are proteins that bind specifically to carbohydrates and may have important biological activities on bacterial cells, acting as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents. ConM (Canavalia maritima lectin) is a protein that is able to inhibit the planktonic grow.h and biofilm formation of S. mutans. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of ConM and concanavalin A (ConA) on the expression of genes related to virulence and biofilm formation in S. mutans. The results show.d that ConM significantly reduced the expression of genes encoding enzymes related to adhesion, formation and regulation of biofilms. On the contrary, ConA did not alter the expression of the genes studied. Because the tw. lectins have a high degree of similarity, the differences in the actions of ConM and ConA may be explained by the small structural differences in the carbohydrate recognition domain of the lectins.
