Feasibility of the 2-point method to determine the load-velocity relationship variables during the countermovement jump exercise

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of load-velocity(L-V)relationship variables obtained through the 2-point method using different load combinations and velocity variables.Methods:Twenty men performed 2 identical sessions consisting of 2 countermovement jumps against 4 external loads(20 kg,40 kg,60 kg,and80 kg)and a heavy squat against a load linked to a mean velocity(MV)of 0.55 m/s(load_(0.55)).The L-V relationship variables(load-axis intercept(L_(0)),velocity-axis intercept(v_(0)),and area under the L-V relationship line(A_(line)))were obtained using 3 velocity variables(MV,mean propulsive velocity(MPV),and peak velocity)by the multiple-point method including(20-40-60-80-load_(0.55))and excluding(20-40-60-80)the heavy squat,as well as from their respective 2-point methods(20-load_(0.55)and 20-80).Results:The L-V relationship variables were obtained with an acceptable reliability(coefncient of variation(CV)≤7.30%;intra-class correlation coefficient>0.63).The reliability of L_(0)and v_(0)was comparable for both methods(CV_(ratio)(calculated as higher value/lower value):1.11-1.12),but the multiple-point method provided Al_(ine)with a greater reliability(CV_(ratio)=1.26).The use of a heavy squat provided the L-V relationship variables with a comparable or higher reliability than the use of a heavy countermovement jump load(CV_(ratio):1.06-1.19).The peak velocity provided the load-velocity relationship variables with the greatest reliability(CV_(ratio):1.15-1.86)followed by the MV(CV_(ratio):1.07-1.18),and finally the MPV.The 2-point methods only revealed an acceptable validity for the MV and MPV(effect size≤0.19;Pearson s product-moment correlation coefficient≥0.96;Lin's concordance correlation coefficient≥0.94).Conclusion:The 2-point method obtained from a heavy squat load and MV or MPV is a quick,safe,and reliable procedure to evaluate the lower-body maximal neuromuscular capacities through the L-V relationship.

Background:There is a growing body of experimental evidence examining the effects of plyometric jump training(PJT)on physical fitness attributes in basketball players;however,this evidence has not yet been comprehensively and systematically aggregated.Therefore,our objective was to meta-analyze the effects of PJT on physical fitness attributes in basketball players,in comparison to a control condition.Methods:A systematic literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed,Web of Science,and Scopus,up to July 2020.Peer-reviewed controlled trials with baseline and follow-up measurements investigating the effects of PJT on physical fitness attributes(muscle power,i.e.,jumping performance,linear sprint speed,change-of-direction speed,balance,and muscle strength)in basketball players,with no restrictions on their playing level,sex,or age.Hedge’s g effect sizes(ES)were calculated for physical fitness variables.Using a random-effects model,potential sources of heterogeneity were selected,including subgroup analyses(age,sex,body mass,and height)and single training factor analysis(program duration,training frequency,and total number of training sessions).Computation of metaregression was also performed.Results:Thirty-two studies were included,involving 818 total basketball players.Significant(p10 m(ES=0.92),change-of-direction performance time across distances≤40 m(ES=1.15)and>40 m(ES=1.02),dynamic(ES=1.16)and static balance(ES=1.48),and maximal strength(ES=0.57).The meta-regression revealed that training duration,training frequency,and total number of sessions completed did not predict the effects of PJT on physical fitness attributes.Subgroup analysis indicated greater improvements in older compared to younger players in horizo

Flow units(FU) rock typing is a common technique for characterizing reservoir flow behavior, producing reliable porosity and permeability estimation even in complex geological settings. However, the lateral extrapolation of FU away from the well into the whole reservoir grid is commonly a difficult task and using the seismic data as constraints is rarely a subject of study. This paper proposes a workflow to generate numerous possible 3D volumes of flow units, porosity and permeability below the seismic resolution limit, respecting the available seismic data at larger scales. The methodology is used in the Mero Field, a Brazilian presalt carbonate reservoir located in the Santos Basin, who presents a complex and heterogenic geological setting with different sedimentological processes and diagenetic history. We generated metric flow units using the conventional core analysis and transposed to the well log data.Then, given a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, the seismic data and the well log statistics, we simulated acoustic impedance, decametric flow units(DFU), metric flow units(MFU), porosity and permeability volumes in the metric scale. The aim is to estimate a minimum amount of MFU able to calculate realistic scenarios porosity and permeability scenarios, without losing the seismic lateral control. In other words, every porosity and permeability volume simulated produces a synthetic seismic that match the real seismic of the area, even in the metric scale. The achieved 3D results represent a high-resolution fluid flow reservoir modelling considering the lateral control of the seismic during the process and can be directly incorporated in the dynamic characterization workflow.

For ulcerative colitis(UC),the variability in inflammatory activity along the colon poses a challenge in management.The focus on achieving endoscopic healing in UC is evident,where the UC Endoscopic Index of Severity and Mayo Endoscopic Subscore are commonly used for evaluation.However,these indices primarily consider the most severely affected region.Liu et al recent study validates the Toronto Inflammatory Bowel Disease Global Endoscopic Reporting(TIGER)score offering a comprehensive assessment of inflammatory activity across diverse segments of the colon and rectum and a reliable index correlating strongly with UC Endoscopic Index of Severity and moderately with Mayo Endoscopic Subscore(MES).Despite recommendation,certain aspects warrant further invest-igation.Fecal calprotectin,an intermediate target,correlates with TIGER and should be explored.Determining TIGER scores defining endoscopic remission and response,evaluating agreement with histological activity,and assessing inter-endoscopist agreement for TIGER require scrutiny.Exploring the correlation between TIGER and intestinal ultrasound,akin to MES,adds value.

The term hepatolithiasis describes the presence of biliary stones within the intrahepatic bile ducts,above the hilar confluence of the hepatic ducts.The disease is more prevalent in Asia,mainly owing to socioeconomic and dietary factors,as well as the prevalence of biliary parasites.In the last century,owing to migration,its global incidence has increased.The main pathophysiological mechanisms involve cholangitis,bile infection and biliary strictures,creating a self-sustaining cycle that perpetuates the disease,frequently characterised by recurrent episodes of bacterial infection referred to as syndrome of“recurrent pyogenic cholangitis”.Furthermore,long-standing hepatolithiasis is a known risk factor for development of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.Various classifications have aimed at providing useful insight of clinically relevant aspects and guidance for treatment.The management of symptomatic patients and those with complications can be complex,and relies upon a multidisciplinary team of hepatologists,endoscopists,interventional radiologists and hepatobiliary surgeons,with the main goal being to offer relief from the clinical presentations and prevent the development of more serious complications.This comprehensive review provides insight on various aspects of hepatolithiasis,with a focus on epidemiology,new evidence on pathophysiology,most important clinical aspects,different classification systems and contemporary management.

This paper presents a tunable multi-threshold micro-electromechanical inertial switch with adjustable threshold capability.The demonstrated device combines the advantages of accelerometers in providing quantitative acceleration measurements and g-threshold switches in saving power when in the inactive state upon experiencing acceleration below the thresholds.The designed proof-of-concept device with two thresholds consists of a cantilever microbeam and two stationary electrodes placed at different positions in the sensing direction.The adjustable threshold capability and the effect of the shock duration on the threshold acceleration are analytically investigated using a nonlinear beam model.Results are shown for the relationships among the applied bias voltage,the duration of shock impact,and the tunable threshold.The fabricated prototypes are tested using a shock-table system.The analytical results agree with the experimental results.The designed device concept is very promising for the classification of the shock and impact loads in transportation and healthcare applications.

Compelling evidence demonstrates that the levels of peripheral amyloid-β(Aβ)fluctuate in Alzheimer’s disease(AD)patients.Moreover,Aβdeposits have been identified in peripheral tissues.However,the relevance of peripheral Aβ(misfolded or not)in pathological situations,and the temporal appearance of these pathological fluctuations,are not well understood.The presence of misfolded Aβin peripheral compartments raises concerns on potential inter-individual transmissions considering the well-reported prion-like properties of this disease-associated protein.The latter is supported by multiple reports demonstrating that Aβmisfolding can be transmitted between humans and experimental animals through multiple routes of exposure.In this mini-review,we discuss the potential implications of peripheral,disease-associated Aβin disease mechanisms,as well as in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Male competition conforms to a cost-benefit model,because while aggression may increase reproductive prospects,it can also increase the risk of injury.We hypothesize that an additional cost in aggressive males would be an increase in parasite load associated with a high energy investment into sexual competition.Some of these infections,in turn,may downmodulate the level of host aggression via energetic trade-offs.We staged dyadic male contests in the lab to investigate the relationships of multiple parasites with the agonistic behavior of lizard hosts,Sceloporus occidentalis.We also included both color and behavioral traits from opponents in the analyses because(1)color patches of lizards may serve as intraspecific signals used by conspecifics to assess the quality of opponents,and(2)contests between male lizards fit classical models of escalated aggression,where lizards increase aggression displays in response to an opponent's behavior.The results conform to our hypothesis because male lizards displayed more pushups when they had more ticks.Moreover,some parasites may modulate the levels of aggression because lizards infected by hematic coccidians performed fewer pushups.Interestingly,lizards also displayed fewer pushups when both the chroma and size of the opponent's blue patch were greater.The results thus also supported the role of the blue patch of s.occidentalis as a sexual armament,because it contributed to the deterrence of aggression from opponent lizards.We revealed that natural parasitic infections in lizard hosts can contribute to their agonistic behavior.We encourage future studies to account for parasites in behavioral testswithlizards.
