Tomatoes Maturation Analysis with Reflectance Spectral Images

The demands for high quality products are increasing in the market, so several tests are performed. These analyses are destructive, time consuming and sometimes expensive. The spectral imaging technique is an alternative that can reduce costs and time and increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these analyses. In this context, the aim of this study was to verify the spectral behavior of the tomato in function of the maturation and its potential use for non-destructive evaluation of food quality. Eighty tomatoes of the Italian group were selected in four stages of maturation （green, pink, light red and red）. Images were collected in wavelengths 480 nm to 710 nm （every 10 nm）. After the images were collected, the fruits were submitted to the physical-chemical analyses. The following parameters were analyzed： color, color index （CI）, pH, soluble solids （SS）, total titratable acidity （TTA） and ratio （SS/TTA）. After characterization the mean spectrum was obtained by the extraction of the spectral characteristics. It was observed that the spectral behavior was the same for all stages of maturation. It was possible to differentiate the green tomatoes in the wavelengths from 520 nm to 560 nm and from 610 nm to 660 nm. These intervals represent the area of reflection of chlorophyll and lycopene, respectively. Near the wavelength 560 nm, the highest absorbance was recorded by ripe tomatoes due to the concentration of lycopene. It is concluded that the best wavelengths for analysis are those in which green has the highest reflectance and it is possible to apply this technique for non-destructive analysis of the maturation of tomatoes.

AIM: To investigate age, sex, histopathology and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) status, as risk factors for gastroduodenal disease outcome in Brazilian dyspeptic *** submitted to upper gastroscopy at Hospital das Clinicas of Marilia, antral biopsy specimens were obtained and subjected to histopathology and H. pylori diagnosis. All patients presenting chronic gastritis (CG) and peptic ulcer (PU) disease localized in the stomach, gastric ulcer (GU) and/or duodenal ulcer (DU) were included in the study. Gastric biopsies (n = 668) positive for H. pylori by rapid urease test were investigated for vacuolating cytotoxin A (vacA ) medium (m) region mosaicism by polymerase chain reaction. Logistic regression analysis was performed to verify the association of age, sex, histopathologic alterations, H. pylori diagnosis and vacA m region mosaicism with the incidence of DU, GU and CG in patients. RESULTS: Of 1466 patients submitted to endoscopy, 1060 (72.3%) presented CG [male/female = 506/554; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.2 ± 17.81], 88 (6.0%) presented DU [male/female = 54/34; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.4 ± 17.14], and 75 (5.1%) presented GU [male/female = 54/21; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.3 ± 17.12] and were included in the comparative analysis. Sex and age showed no detectable effect on CG incidence (overall c 2 = 2.1, P = 0.3423). Sex [Odds ratios (OR) = 1.8631, P = 0.0058] but not age (OR = 0.9929, P = 0.2699) was associated with DU and both parameters had a highly significant effect on GU (overall c 2 = 30.5, P < 0.0001). The histopathological results showed a significant contribution of ageing for both atrophy (OR = 1.0297, P < 0.0001) and intestinal metaplasia (OR = 1.0520, P < 0.0001). Presence of H. pylori was significantly associated with decreasing age (OR = 0.9827, P < 0.0001) and with the incidence of DU (OR = 3.6077, P < 0.0001). Mechanisms and Associated Factors of Nocturia in Women Attending Two Urogynecology Clinics: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Nocturia has a multifactorial etiology, and its diagnostic approach involves, in addition to medical history and physical examination, the use of a bladder diary to define the pathophysiological mechanisms present in each case. Methods: This study investigated the prevalence of nocturia, its mechanisms, and associated factors in women with lower urinary tract symptoms attending two urogynecology clinics in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Anamnesis, physical examination, and a 24-hour bladder diary were conducted. Two definitions of nocturia were considered: one or more nighttime voids and two or more nighttime voids. Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests were used, with p-value ≤ 0.05 considered significant. Results: A total of 133 participants were included. The majority were aged 60 years or older (61.4%) and had three or more comorbidities (66.7%), with systemic arterial hypertension being the most prevalent (59.1%). Of the total participants, 54 (41.4%) completed the bladder diary. Among those with one or more nighttime voids (70.7%), the prevalence of nocturnal polyuria was 69.1%, reduced nocturnal bladder capacity was 17.3%, and global polyuria was 12.9%. Among participants with two or more nighttime voids (56.4%), the prevalences were respectively 68.2%, 19.1%, and 13.6%. Among the mechanisms, associations were found only with global polyuria, namely: use of insulin, body mass index and tobacco consumption. An association was also found between recurrent urinary tract infection and global polyuria in participants with two or more nighttime voids. Conclusions: The prevalence of nocturia was higher than that reported in general population studies and specialized services for lower urinary tract symptoms. Nocturnal polyuria was the most prevalent mechanism. Associations were observed between the use of insulin, body mass index, tobacco consumption, and recurrent urinary tract infection with global polyuria. No associations were found between any c

Objective: To evaluate intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the measurement of the mechanical axis of the lower limb by means of the panoramic radiograph of lower limbs by physicians with different levels of medical practice. Method: A retrospective cross-sectional study with preoperative and postoperative radiographic analysis of a group of 100 patients submitted to total knee arthroplasty. Results: It was observed that there is a highly significant intraobserver and interobserver agreement (p Conclusion: The panoramic radiograph of the lower limbs is a reliable method for measuring the mechanical axis of the lower limb in patients submitted to total knee arthroplasty, regardless of the level of medical practice of the evaluator.

Introduction: Paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridine-dichloride) is a herbicide used to combat weeds and improve crop productivity. Its acute toxicity can cause fatal poisoning in humans and animals and several studies have shown a strong correlation between paraquat and Parkinson’s disease. Objective: To determine the concentration of paraquat in different types of rice in Brazil. Method: Paraquat quantification is based on a complexation reaction with sodium dithionite, which generates a blueish color compound, whose absorbance was read in a spectrophotometer at the 600 nm wavelength. Results: Five samples were found to be above the maximum allowed limit, while one sample had a concentration in the upper allowed limit. The method employed did not allow quantification of black rice. Conclusion: There is a need for identification of the type of pesticide used in each examined crop as well as their respective dates of remission in order to improve the safety of agricultural practices.
