Soil boron fertilization:The role of nutrient sources and rootstocks in citrus production

Boron （B） is a key element for citrus production, especially in tropical regions, where the nutrient availability is commonly low in the soil. In addition, information about doses, fertilizer sources, methods of application, and particularly, differential nutrient demand of scion/rootstock combinations are required for efficient fertilization of commercial groves. In a non-irri- gated sweet orange orchard （cv. Natal）, grafted onto Rangpur lime, Swingle citrumelo or Sunki mandarin, we studied the application of two sources of B： boric acid （17% B, soluble in water） and ulexite （12% B, partiaJly soluble in water） at four levels of supply （control without B, and soil application of 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B）. The experiment was carried out for three years （2004-2006）. Boron availability in the soil and concentration in the leaves, as well as the fruit yield and quality of trees were evaluated. Soil B extracted with hot water and total leaf B positively correlated with doses of the nutrient applied to the trees. Levels of B in the soil and in the leaves did not vary with fertilizer sources. Fruit yield of trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo was more responsive to B doses than those grafted onto Sunki mandarin. The maximum fruit yield of trees grafted onto Swingle was obtained with 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B, and leaf B level of 280 mg kg-1 that point out to a highest demand for B when this combination was compared with other rootstocks. Furthermore, fertilization with B did not affect the quality of fruits, but correlated with B and potassium （K） concentrations in the leaves. These results also support that the current recommendations for levels of B in leaves should be revisited.

Remote ischemic preconditioning as treatment for non-ischemic gastrointestinal disorders: Beyond ischemia-reperfusion injury

Common gastrointestinal diseases such as radiation enteritis(RE),acute pancreatitis,inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)and drug-induced hepatotoxicity share pathophysiological mechanisms at the molecular level,mostly involving the activation of many pathways of the immune response,ultimately leading to tissue *** oxidative stress,inflammatory cytokine release,inflammatory cell infiltration and activation and the up-regulation of inflammatory transcription factors participate in the pathophysiology of these complex *** varies in each specific disease,but at least in the cases of RE and IBD immunosuppressors are ***,full therapeutic responses are not always *** pathophysiology of ischemiareperfusion(IR)injury shares many of these *** and repetitive periods of ischemia in an organ or limb have been shown to protect against subsequent major IR injury in distant organs,a phenomenon called remote ischemic preconditioning(RIP).This procedure has been shown to protect the gut,pancreas and liver by modulating many of the same inflammatory *** RIP is safe and tolerable,and has shown to be effective in some recent clinical trials,I suggest that RIP could be used as a physiologicallyrelevant adjunct treatment for non-ischemic gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions.

Degradation of duloxetine: Identification of transformation products by UHPLC-ESI(+)-HRmS/mS,in silico toxicity and wastewater analysis

Duloxetine(DUL), an antidepressant drug, has been detected in surface water and wastewater effluents, however, there is little information on the formation of its transformation products(TPs). In this work, hydrolysis, photodegradation(UV irradiation) and chlorination experiments were performed on spiked distillated water, under controlled experimental conditions to simulate abiotic processes that can occur in the environment and wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs). Eleven TPs, nine from reaction with UV light and two from chlorine contact, were formed and detected by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and nine of them had their chemical structures elucidated upon analyses of their fragmentation patterns in mS/mS spectra. The formation and degradation of the TPs were observed. The parent compound was completely degraded after30 min in photodegradation and after 24 hr in chlorination. Almost all TPs were completely degraded in the experiments. The ecotoxicity and mutagenicity of the TPs were predicted based on several in silico models and it was found that a few of these products presented more ecotoxicity than DUL itself and six TPs showed positive mutagenicity. Finally, wastewater samples were analyzed and DUL and one TP, possibly formed by chlorination process, were detected in the effluent, which showed that WWTP not only did not remove DUL, but also formed a TP.

AIm: To investigate age, sex, histopathology and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) status, as risk factors for gastroduodenal disease outcome in Brazilian dyspeptic *** submitted to upper gastroscopy at Hospital das Clinicas of marilia, antral biopsy specimens were obtained and subjected to histopathology and H. pylori diagnosis. All patients presenting chronic gastritis (CG) and peptic ulcer (PU) disease localized in the stomach, gastric ulcer (GU) and/or duodenal ulcer (DU) were included in the study. Gastric biopsies (n = 668) positive for H. pylori by rapid urease test were investigated for vacuolating cytotoxin A (vacA ) medium (m) region mosaicism by polymerase chain reaction. Logistic regression analysis was performed to verify the association of age, sex, histopathologic alterations, H. pylori diagnosis and vacA m region mosaicism with the incidence of DU, GU and CG in patients. RESULTS: Of 1466 patients submitted to endoscopy, 1060 (72.3%) presented CG [male/female = 506/554; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.2 ± 17.81], 88 (6.0%) presented DU [male/female = 54/34; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.4 ± 17.14], and 75 (5.1%) presented GU [male/female = 54/21; mean age (year) ± SD = 51.3 ± 17.12] and were included in the comparative analysis. Sex and age showed no detectable effect on CG incidence (overall c 2 = 2.1, P = 0.3423). Sex [Odds ratios (OR) = 1.8631, P = 0.0058] but not age (OR = 0.9929, P = 0.2699) was associated with DU and both parameters had a highly significant effect on GU (overall c 2 = 30.5, P metaplasia (OR = 1.0520, P m1 in DU was statistically significant (OR = 2.3563, P = 0.0018) but not in CG (OR = 2.678, P = 0.0863) and G

Emerging and re-emerging human infectious diseases:A systematic review of the role of wild animals with a focus on public health impact

Infectious diseases continue to impose unpredictable burdens on global health and economies, a subject that requires constant research and updates. In this sense, the objective of the present article was to review studies on the role of wild animals as reservoirs and/or dispersers of etiological agents of human infectious diseases in order to compile data on the main wild animals and etiological agents involved in zoonotic outbreaks. A systematic review was carried out using PRISmA guidelines, using the Pubmed, Scopus and SciELO platforms as data banks. The descriptors used were "zoonosis", "human infectious diseases" and "wild animals". The results show that wild animals(mainly bats, birds and primates) play an important role in the dissemination of etiological agents(mainly viruses, as a new coronavirus called 2019 Novel Coronavirus) in extensive geographic regions. moreover, these wild animal organisms can act as the site for essential biotic synergy among several pathogenic microorganisms, promoting a higher rate of adaptation, mutation and even genetic recombination, with consequent stimulation of new strains and subtypes, inducing new infectious agents with unknown virulent potential. In conclusion, the monitoring of these diseases and adequate preparation for possible epidemics and pandemics are fundamental conditions for the mitigation of their future impact. The zoonotic threat of these etiological agents and the impact on public health can be enormous as shown by the ongoing epidemic of 2019 novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV) infections.

Quantum effects on dislocation motion from ring-polymer molecular dynamics

Quantum motion of atoms known as zero-point vibration was recently proposed to explain a long-standing discrepancy between theoretically computed and experimentally measured low-temperature plastic strength of iron and possibly other metals with high atomic *** finding challenges the traditional notion that quantum motion of atoms is relatively unimportant in solids comprised of heavy *** we report quantum dynamic simulations of quantum effects on dislocation motion within the exact formalism of Ring-Polymer molecular Dynamics(RPmD).To extend the reach of quantum atomistic simulations to length and time scales relevant for extended defects in materials,we implemented RPmD in the open-source code LAmmPS thus making the RPmD method widely available to the *** use our RPmD/LAmmPS approach for direct calculations of dislocation mobility and its effects on the yield strength ofα-*** simulation results establish that quantum effects are noticeable at temperatures below 50 K but account for only a modest(≈13% at T=0 K)overall reduction in the Peierls barrier,at variance with the factor of two reduction predicted earlier based on the more approximate framework of harmonic transition state *** results confirm that zero-point vibrations provide ample additional agitation for atomic motion that increases with decreasing temperature,however its enhancing effect on dislocation mobility is largely offset by an increase in the effective atom size,an effect known as quantum dispersion that has not been accounted for in the previous calculations.
