AIM： To de.cribe.the.tre.d in duode.al biopsy pe.formance.during routine.uppe. gastrointe.tinal e.doscopy in an adult Spanish population, and to analyze.its value.for the.diagnosis of ce.iac dise.se.in clinical practice. Me.HODS： A 15 ye.r-tre.d （1990 to 2004） in duode.al biopsy pe.forme. whe. unde.taking uppe. gastrointe.tinal e.doscopy was studie.. We.analyse. the.pre.ale.ce.of ce.iac dise.se.in the.ove.all group, and in the.subgroups with anae.ia and/or chronic diarrhoe.. Re.ULTS： Duode.al biopsy was pe.forme. in 1033 of 13 678 uppe. gastrointe.tinal e.doscopie. （7.6%）; an incre.se.in the.use.of such was obse.ve. ove. the.study pe.iod （1.9% in 1990-1994, 5% in 1995-1999 and 12.8% in 2000-2004）. Ce.iac dise.se.was diagnose. in 22 patie.ts （2.2%）, this be.ng more.fre.ue.t in wome. than in me. （3% and 1% re.pe.tive.y）. Fourte.n out of 514 （2.7%） patie.ts with anae.ia, 12 out of 141 （8.5%） with chronic diarrhoe. and 8 out of 42 （19%） with anae.ia plus chronic diarrhoe. had ce.iac dise.se. A classical clinical pre.e.tation was obse.ve. in 55% of the.case., 23% of the.patie.ts had associate. de.matitis he.pe.iformis and 64% pre.e.te. anae.ia; 9% we.e.diagnose. by familial scre.ning and 5% by cryptoge.e.ic hype.transaminasae.ia. CONCLUSION： Duode.al biopsy unde.take. during routine.uppe. gastrointe.tinal e.doscopy in adults, has be.n gradually incorporate. into clinical practice. and is a use.ul tool for the.diagnosis of ce.iac dise.se.in high risk groups such as those.with anae.ia and/or chronic diarrhoe..

Abstract Fore.ts have.be.n e.panding ove. typical savanna site. for the.past 3000 ye.rs in the.Ne.tropics. Such invasion can produce.a se.ie. of e.vironme.tal modifications on typical savanna; howe.e., it re.ains uncle.r how modifications in soil prope.tie., cause. by the.e.croachme.t of woody spe.ie., facilitate.the.e.pansion of fore.t e.osyste.s unde. dystrophic conditions. He.e.we.e.amine. che.ical and microbiological change. associ- ate. with tre. e.croachme.t in oxisols of a Ne.tropical Savanna at Assis e.ological Station, Southe.ste.n Brazil. We.pre.icte. that tre. e.croachme.t cause. by typical fore.t spe.ie. would cause.significant change. in the.che.ical and microbiological prope.tie. of savanna soils. Soils we.e.sample. at Assis e.ological Station, from savanna site. diffe.ing in tre. e.croachme.t （typical, de.se.and fore.te. savanna） cause. by de.ade. of fire.e.clusion. We.analyse. ve.e.ation le.f are. inde. and le.f litte. volume.de.osite. in the.studie. plots and che.ical （pH,organic matte., P, K, Ca, Mg, A1, NO3-, NH4＋） and microbiological （microbial C biomass and de.ydroge.ase.activity） prope.tie. of soils unde. distinct e.croachme.t conditions. Most soil che.ical prope.tie. did not change.along the.tre. e.croachme.t gradie.t; howe.e., total P, soil organic matte., soil microbial C and de.ydroge.ase.activity incre.se. from typical savanna to fore.te. savanna. The.change. in soil organic matte. and de.ydroge.ase.activity we.e.corre.ate. with the.value. of le.f are. inde. and litte. volume.along the.e.croachme.t gradie.t. Our re.ults de.onstrate.that fore.t spe.ie. can incre.se.carbon and phosphorus supplie. in tropical savanna soils.
