Trigeminal-specific stimulants have been shown to activate different receptors preferentially and this likely accounts for variation in sensory *** is unclear whether trigeminal sensitivity is similar across different transient receptor potential(TRP)receptors or if dysfunction of different receptors results in differing patient ***,a prospective cohort study was conducted,consisting of trigeminal lateralization testing with three different stimulants(eucalyptol,isothiocyanate,acetic acid),olfaction testing with Sniffin'Sticks,and measurement of various patient‐reported outcome measures(PROMs).A total of 50 participants were enrolled across the olfactory *** TDI score was 27.1±8.3(range 7.0–39.5)with 38%normosmic and 62%*** trigeminal lateralization scores out of 20 in the overall cohort were 16.18(2.78)for eucalyptol,14.94(3.49)for mustard oil,and 15.28(3.68)for *** showed a significant correlation with threshold scores of Sniffin'Sticks.A significant correlation was found between acetic acid and various *** of the lateralization scores of the trigeminal stimulants correlated to each other significantly and there was no correlation to *** lack of correlation suggests that the measured sensitivity of one type of TRP receptor may not translate to similar sensitivity of the other *** investigations with TRPV1 and TRPA1 agonists are needed to corroborate our findings.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation(NMES) and testosterone replacement therapy(TRT) are effective rehabilitation strategies to attenuate muscle atrophy and evoke hypertrophy in persons with spinal cord injury(ScI). However both interventions might increase heterotopic ossification(HO) size in ScI patients. We present the results of two men with chronic traumatic motor complete ScI who also had pre-existing HO and participated in a study investigating the effects of TRT or TRT plus NMES resistance training(RT) on body composition. The 49-year-old male, Subject A, has unilateral HO in his right thigh. The 31-year-old male, Subject B, has bilateral HO in both thighs. Both participants wore transdermal testosterone patches(4-6 mg/d) daily for 16 wk. Subject A also underwent progressive NMES-RT twice weekly for 16 wk. Magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired prior to and post intervention. cross-sectional areas(cSA) of thewhole thigh and knee extensor skeletal muscles, femoral bone, and HO were measured. In Subject A(NMES-RT + TRT), the whole thigh skeletal muscle cSA increased by 10%, the knee extensor cSA increased by 17%, and the HO + femoral bone cSA did not change. In Subject B(TRT), the whole thigh skeletal muscle cSA increased by 13% in the right thigh and 6% in the left thigh. The knee extensor cSA increased by 7% in the right thigh and did not change in the left thigh. The femoral bone and HO cSAs in both thighs did not change. Both the TRT and NMES-RT + TRT protocols evoked muscle hypertrophy without stimulating the growth of preexisting HO.

Two-dimensional(2D)layered oxides have recently attracted wide attention owing to the strong coupling among charges,spins,lattice,and strain,which allows great flexibility and opportunities in structure designs as well as multifunctionality *** parallel,plasmonic hybrid nanostructures exhibit exotic localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)providing a broad range of applications in nanophotonic devices and sensors.A hybrid material platform combining the unique multifunctional 2D layered oxides and plasmonic nanostructures brings optical tuning into the new *** this work,a novel self-assembled Bi2MoO6(BMO)2D layered oxide incorporated with plasmonic Au nanoinclusions has been demonstrated via one-step pulsed laser deposition(PLD)*** microstructural characterizations,including scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM),differential phase contrast imaging(DPc),and STEM tomography,have demonstrated the high epitaxial quality and particle-in-matrix morphology of the BMO-Au nanocomposite ***-STEM imaging clarifies the magnetic domain structures of BMO *** different BMO structures including layered supercell(LSc)and superlattices have been revealed which is attributed to the variable strain states throughout the BMO-Au *** to the combination of plasmonic Au and layered structure of BMO,the nanocomposite film exhibits a typical LSPR in visible wavelength region and strong anisotropy in terms of its optical and ferromagnetic *** study opens a new avenue for developing novel 2D layered complex oxides incorporated with plasmonic metal or semiconductor phases showing great potential for applications in multifunctional nanoelectronics devices.

The round-tailed horned lizardPhrynosoma modestumis cryptically colored and resembles a small stone when it draws legs close to its body and elevates its back. We investigated effectiveness of camouflage inP. modestumand its dependence on stones by placing a lizard in one of two microhabitats (uniform sand or sand with surface rocks approximately the same size as lizards). An observer who knew which microhabitat contained the lizard was asked to locate the lizard visually. Latency to detection was longer and probability of no detection within 60 s was higher for lizards on rock background than on bare sand. In arenas where lizards could choose to occupy rock or bare sand, much higher proportions selected rocky backgrounds throughout the day; at night all lizards slept among stones. A unique posture givesP. modestuma rounded appearance similar to many natural stones. Lizards occasionally adopted the posture, but none did so in response to a nearby experimenter. Stimuli that elicit the posture are unknown. ThatP. modestumis better camouflaged among rocks than on bare sand and prefers to occupy rocky areas suggests that special resemblance to rocks (masquerade) enhances camouflage attributable to coloration and immobility.

Establishment of pregnancy in pigs involves maintaining progesterone secretion from the corpora lutea in addition to regulating a sensitive interplay between the maternal immune system and attachment of the rapidly expanding trophoblast for nutrient absorption. The peri-implantation period of rapid trophoblastic elongation followed by attachment to the maternal uterine endometrium is critical for establishing a sufficient placental-uterine interface for subsequent nutrient transport for fetal survival to term, but is also marked by the required conceptus release of factors involved with stimulating uterine secretion of histotroph and modulation of the maternal immune system. Many endometrial genes activated by the conceptus secretory factors stimulate a tightly controlled proinflammatory response within the uterus. A number of the cytokines released by the elongating conceptuses stimulate inducible transcription factors such as nuclear factor kappa B （NFKB） potentially regulating the maternal uterine proinflammatory and immune response. This review will establish the current knowledge for the role of conceptus cytokine production and release in early development and establishment of pregnancy in the pig.

Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive brain tumor,very invasive and thus difficult to eradicate with standard oncology *** treatments based on pulsed electric fields have proven to be a successful method to treat cancerous ***,they rely on stiff electrodes,which cause acute and chronic injuries,especially in soft tissues like the *** we demonstrate the feasibility of delivering pulsed electric fields with flexible electronics using an in ovo vascularized tumor *** show with fluorescence widefield and multiphoton microscopy that pulsed electric fields induce vasoconstriction of blood vessels and evoke calcium signals in vascularized glioblastoma spheroids stably expressing a genetically encoded fluorescence *** of the electric field delivery are compared with the measured influence of electric field effects on cell membrane integrity in exposed tumor *** results confirm the feasibility of flexible electronics as a means of delivering intense pulsed electric fields to tumors in an intravital 3D vascularized model of human glioblastoma.

All‐superconducting rotating machines have the potential for meeting the high power density and high efficiency required for electrical aircraft ***,very high Ac loss encountered in superconducting armature windings could hinder their *** MgB_(2) wires are one of the promising candidates for the stator windings,due to their potentially low Ac loss properties with small filament size and twist *** the first step,the dependence of critical current and n‐value on magnetic fields and temperatures I_(c)(B,T)and n(B,T),which are basic input parameters for Ac loss simulation,needs to be *** this work,we present transport I_(c)measurements in three non‐magnetic multifilamentary MgB_(2) wires(MgB_(2)/Nb/cuNi/cuZn):one large wire with a 0.70 mm diameter and 25 mm twist pitch,and two small wires with a 0.48 mm diameter each and a 10 mm and 30 mm twist pitch respectively.A four‐probe direct current method is used to measure I_(c) of the MgB_(2) wires with variations in temperature(15-35 K)and magnetic field(0-5.5 T).Full I_(c) data for the small wire with 10 mm twist pitch was obtained,and the n‐values were mostly less than *** the I_(c) data for the large wire at low fields was more limited due to heating,the n‐values were higher and could be up to around *** difference is attributed to the different filament *** also found that there is no significant hysteresis in the transport critical current measured by decreasing or increasing magnetic fields due to the non‐magnetic *** non‐hysteretic characteristic is critical for lowering Ac loss because the additional losses from magnetic sheaths can be *** the magnetic‐field dependence of critical current density,an empirical expression has been developed that provides suitable extrapolations to lower fields for the large wire.

Background carotid endarterectomy(cEA)results in fewer perioperative strokes,but more myocardial infarctions(MI)than carotid artery stenting(cAS).We explored a combined modelling approach that stratifies patients by baseline stroke and *** Baseline registry-based risk models for perioperative stroke and MI were identified via literature *** then selected treatment risk models in the carotid Revascularisation Stenting versus Endarterectomy(cREST)trial by serially adding covariates(baseline risk,treatment(cEA vs cAS),treatment-risk interaction and age-treatment interaction terms).Treatment risk models were externally validated using data from the Society for Vascular Surgery(SVS)Vascular Quality Initiative(VQI)cEA and carotid stenting registries and treatment models were recalibrated to the SVS-VQI *** net benefit was estimated by summing the predicted stroke and MI risk differences with cEA versus *** Perioperative treatment models had moderate predictiveness(c-statistic 0.69 for stroke and 0.68 for MI)and reasonable calibration across the risk spectrum for both stroke and MI within *** external validation in SVS-VQI,predictiveness was substantially reduced(c-statistic 0.61 for stroke and 0.54 for MI)and models substantially overpredicted *** patients(86.7%)were predicted to have net benefit from cEA in cREST(97.0%of symptomatic patients vs 75%of asymptomatic patients).Discussion A combined modelling approach that separates risk elements has potential to inform optimal ***,our current approach is not ready for clinical *** data support guidelines that suggest that cEA should be the preferred revascularisation modality in most patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis.
