The genus Mentha encompasses mint species cultivated for their essential oils, which are formulated into a vast array of consumer products. Desirab.e oil characteristics and resistance to the fungal disease Verti- cillium wilt are top priorities for the mint industry. However, cultivated mints have complex polyploid ge- homes and are sterile. b.eeding efforts, therefore, require the development of genomic resources for fertile mint species. Here, we present draft de novo genome and plastome assemb.ies for a wilt-resistant South African accession of Mentha Iongifolia （L.） Huds., a diploid species ancestral to cultivated peppermint and spearmint. The 353 Mb.genome contains 35 597 predicted protein-coding genes, including 292 disease resistance gene homologs, and nine genes determining essential oil characteristics. A genetic linkage map ordered 1397 genome scaffolds on 12 pseudochromosomes. More than two million simple sequence repeats were identified, which will facilitate molecular marker development. The M. Iongifolia genome is a valuab.e resource for b.th metab.lic engineering and molecular b.eeding. This is exemplified b. employing the genome sequence to clone and functionally characterize the promoters in a peppermint cultivar, and demonstrating the utility of a glandular trichome-specific promoter to increase expression of a b.osynthetic gene, thereb. modulating essential oil composition.

The impact of the Rural Minimum Living Standard Guarantee(Rural Dib.o)Program on child nutrition outcomes

The Rural Minimum Living Standard Guarantee(Rural Dib.o)is an important unconditional cash transfer program to alleviate poverty in rural China.Despite the importance of children’s nutrition in b.eaking poverty cycles,little is known ab.ut the impact of Rural Dib.o on child nutrition outcomes.Using China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this paper examines the effects of Rural Dib.o on child nutrition outcomes and investigates potential pathways and heterogeneous effects.We exploit propensity score matching and difference-in-differences techniques to evaluate the effects of the Rural Dib.o program on child nutrition outcomes.Our results suggest that Rural Dib.o significantly impacts the nutrition outcomes of children up to 15 years of age.Specifically,our results suggest that Rural Dib.o improves child height-to-age z-scores b. 1.05 standard deviations and lowers the prob.b.lity of stunting b. 11.9 percentage points.Additional analyses suggest that increased protein intake is the main pathway through which Rural Dib.o participation contrib.tes to b.tter nutrition outcomes.We also find that the effect of the program is more pronounced among girls,children who are non-left-b.hind or live with highly educated mothers,and those from low-income families and poor areas.Our findings suggest that Rural Dib.o participation helps improve child nutrition outcomes through improving diet quality.

Comb.ned risk modelling approach to identify the optimal carotid revascularisation approach

b.ckground Carotid endarterectomy(CEA)results in fewer perioperative strokes,b.t more myocardial infarctions(MI)than carotid artery stenting(CAS).We explored a comb.ned modelling approach that stratifies patients b. b.seline stroke and MI.Methods b.seline registry-b.sed risk models for perioperative stroke and MI were identified via literature search.We then selected treatment risk models in the Carotid Revascularisation Stenting versus Endarterectomy(CREST)trial b. serially adding covariates(b.seline risk,treatment(CEA vs CAS),treatment-risk interaction and age-treatment interaction terms).Treatment risk models were externally validated using data from the Society for Vascular Surgery(SVS)Vascular Quality Initiative(VQI)CEA and carotid stenting registries and treatment models were recalib.ated to the SVS-VQI population.Predicted net b.nefit was estimated b. summing the predicted stroke and MI risk differences with CEA versus CAS.Results Perioperative treatment models had moderate predictiveness(c-statistic 0.69 for stroke and 0.68 for MI)and reasonab.e calib.ation across the risk spectrum for b.th stroke and MI within CREST.On external validation in SVS-VQI,predictiveness was sub.tantially reduced(c-statistic 0.61 for stroke and 0.54 for MI)and models sub.tantially overpredicted risk.Most patients(86.7%)were predicted to have net b.nefit from CEA in CREST(97.0%of symptomatic patients vs 75%of asymptomatic patients).Discussion A comb.ned modelling approach that separates risk elements has potential to inform optimal treatment.However,our current approach is not ready for clinical application.These data support guidelines that suggest that CEA should b. the preferred revascularisation modality in most patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis.

Acid-treated Fe-doped TiO2 as a high performance photocatalyst used for degradation of phenol under visib.e light irradiation

The photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles is significantly increased b. an acid-treatment process. The photocatalyst nanoparticles were prepared using sol–gel method with 0.5 mol% ratio of Fe:Ti in acidic pH of 3. The nanoparticles were structurally characterized b. means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS). It was ob.erved that the photocatalytic activity suffered from an iron oxide contaminating layer deposited on the surface of the nanoparticles. This contamination layer was removed using an HCl acidtreatment process. The photocatalytic activity using 500 mg/L of Fe0.5-TiO2 in a 10 mg/L of phenol solution increased significantly from 33% to 57%(ab.ut 73% increase in the performance), within 90 min of reaction time under visib.e light irradiation. This significant improvement was achieved b. removing the iron oxide contamination layer from the surface of the nanoparticles and adjusting p H to mild acidic and b.sic pHs.

First attempt to use a remotely operated vehicle to ob.erve soniferous fish b.havior in the Gulf of Maine,Western Atlantic Ocean

Underwater sound and video ob.ervations were made at noon, sunset, and midnight in sand, gravel, and b.ulderhab.tat in the Stellwagen b.nk National Marine Sanctuary, Gulf of Maine, USA in Octob.r 2001 using a remotely operated vehicle(ROV). Seventeen species of fish and squid were ob.erved with clear hab.tat and time differences. Ob.ervations of feedingb.havior, disturb.nce b.havior, and b.th interspecific and intraspecific interactions provided numerous opportunities for potentialsound production; however, sounds were recorded only during a single dive. Although high noise levels generated b. the ROVand support ship may have masked some sounds, we conclude that fish sound production in the Gulf of Maine during the fall isuncommon. The recorded fish sounds are tentatively attrib.ted to the cusk b.osme b.osme. Cusk sounds consisted variously ofisolated thumps, widely spaced thump trains, drumrolls, and their comb.nations. Frequency peaks were ob.erved at 188, 539, and1195 Hz. Use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as a passive acoustic ob.ervation platform was prob.ematic due to high ROVself-noise and the ROV's inab.lity to maintain a fixed position on the b.ttom without thruster power. Some fishes were clearlyalso disturb.d b. Effect of Liquid versus Ice Slurry Ingestion on Core Temperature during Simulated Mining Conditions

Miners in Australia frequently perform physically demanding work under high amb.ent temperatures and humidity, often whilst wearing personal protective equipment, leading to heat-related illnesses. This study investigated effects of replacing 100% and 50% sweat losses with 5% carb.hydrate liquid or ice-slurry solution on core temperature during simulated mining conditions. Five randomized treadmill trials were performed with: no fluid replacement (NF), 100% (100 ICE) and 50% (50 ICE) sweat loss replaced with ice-slurry (~-1°C) solution and 100% (100 LIQ) and 50% (50 LIQ) sweat loss replaced with liquid (~+4°C) solution. Time to exhaustion was longer in 100 ICE followed b. 100 LIQ, 50 ICE, 50 LIQ and NF. Change in rectal temperature was least in 100 ICE followed b. 100 LIQ, 50 ICE, 50 LIQ and NF. Ingestion of ice-slurry resulted in longer time to exhaustion and slower rates of change in rectal temperature. It is recommended that ice-slurry drinks b. provided to personnel to lower heat strain during hot working conditions.

All‐superconducting rotating machines have the potential for meeting the high power density and high efficiency required for electrical aircraft applications.However,very high AC loss encountered in superconducting armature windings could hinder their development.Multifilamentary Mgb.(2) wires are one of the promising candidates for the stator windings,due to their potentially low AC loss properties with small filament size and twist pitches.As the first step,the dependence of critical current and n‐value on magnetic fields and temperatures I_(c)(b.T)and n(b.T),which are b.sic input parameters for AC loss simulation,needs to b. measured.In this work,we present transport I_(c)measurements in three non‐magnetic multifilamentary Mgb.(2) wires(Mgb.(2)/Nb.CuNi/CuZn):one large wire with a 0.70 mm diameter and 25 mm twist pitch,and two small wires with a 0.48 mm diameter each and a 10 mm and 30 mm twist pitch respectively.A four‐prob. direct current method is used to measure I_(c) of the Mgb.(2) wires with variations in temperature(15-35 K)and magnetic field(0-5.5 T).Full I_(c) data for the small wire with 10 mm twist pitch was ob.ained,and the n‐values were mostly less than 20.While the I_(c) data for the large wire at low fields was more limited due to heating,the n‐values were higher and could b. up to around 100.The difference is attrib.ted to the different filament sizes.Experiments also found that there is no significant hysteresis in the transport critical current measured b. decreasing or increasing magnetic fields due to the non‐magnetic sheaths.This non‐hysteretic characteristic is critical for lowering AC loss b.cause the additional losses from magnetic sheaths can b. eliminated.From the magnetic‐field dependence of critical current density,an empirical expression has b.en developed that provides suitab.e extrapolations to lower fields for the large wire.

Effect of music on patients undergoing outpatient colonoscopy

AIM: To evaluate the effect of relaxing music during colonoscopy under low-dose conscious sedation, on patient satisfaction, scope insertion time and procedure duration, medication doses, and the perceived adequacy of sedation and scope insertion difficulty on the part of the endoscopist. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven consecutive adult outpatients presenting for routine colonoscopy under low-dose conscious sedation were randomized to undergo their procedures either with music played during the procedure or no music played. RESULTS: There were no statistical differences b.tween the two groups in terms of meperidine dose, midazolam dose, time to reach the cecum, total procedure time, endoscopist assessment of scope insertion difficulty, endoscopist assessment of adequacy of sedation, or the pain experience of the patients during their procedure. The music group did report significantly b.tter overall procedure satisfaction as compared to the non music group on two of our three different scales. CONCLUSION: While music does not result in shortened procedure times, lower doses of sedative medications or perceived patient pain, the patients who have music playing during their procedures report modestly greater satisfaction with their procedures.

Estab.ishment of pregnancy in pigs involves maintaining progesterone secretion from the corpora lutea in addition to regulating a sensitive interplay b.tween the maternal immune system and attachment of the rapidly expanding trophob.ast for nutrient ab.orption. The peri-implantation period of rapid trophob.astic elongation followed b. attachment to the maternal uterine endometrium is critical for estab.ishing a sufficient placental-uterine interface for sub.equent nutrient transport for fetal survival to term, b.t is also marked b. the required conceptus release of factors involved with stimulating uterine secretion of histotroph and modulation of the maternal immune system. Many endometrial genes activated b. the conceptus secretory factors stimulate a tightly controlled proinflammatory response within the uterus. A numb.r of the cytokines released b. the elongating conceptuses stimulate inducib.e transcription factors such as nuclear factor kappa b.（NFKb. potentially regulating the maternal uterine proinflammatory and immune response. This review will estab.ish the current knowledge for the role of conceptus cytokine production and release in early development and estab.ishment of pregnancy in the pig.
