The potential of starch-chitosan blends with poloxamer for the preparation of microparticles by spray-drying

Using biopolymers as wall materials in spray drying poses challenges,particularly in attaining flowability and thermal stability among their physicochemical *** paper addresses these challenges by preparing microparticles using a blend of starch–chitosan and a poloxamer,commercially named Pluronic®*** aimed to elucidate the effects of varying poloxamer concentrations on the resulting particles through the spray drying *** with a poloxamer concentration of 3%(w/v)demonstrated a notably higher yield,especially when compared to those with 0%and 1%*** with 3%and 5%(w/v)poloxamer displayed a narrower particle size distribution,with the 3%blend showing a superior yield attributed to arrangements of blend components that improve flowability.X-ray diffraction analysis showcased the characteristic peaks of A-type starch form,with shifts suggesting enhanced interactions between *** with increased poloxamer content showed elevated thermal degradation temperatures,with the 3%blend registering a significant rise,opening avenues for encapsulating heat-sensitive *** study primarily focuses on the preparation and basic characterization of *** underscores the potential of blends with optimal poloxamer concentrations in microencapsulation,emphasizing further research to harness their capabilities thoroughly.

The procurement process for organ donation begins with the identification of potential organ donors in emergency or critical care units(CCU),followed by their clinical evaluation,diagnostic procedures,and therapeutic interventions,mostly conducted in *** concludes with the request for organ donation and,if accepted,the retrieval of *** most interventions occurring in detection units,there has been a neglect of the strategic role played by critical care specialists(CCS)in managing and caring for brain-dead or near-brain-death *** arise:Are they willing to undertake this responsibility?Do they fully comprehend the nature of organ procurement?Are they aware of the specific interventions required to maintain possible organ donors in optimal physiological condition?Our objective is to examine the role of CCS in organ procurement and propose ways to enhance it,ultimately aiming to increase and enhance organ donation rates.

Plant-based antimicrobial agents are readily available, cost-effective, and exhibit low toxicity, making them promising alternatives in combatting microbial infections. Among these plants, garlic (Allium sativum) stands out for its traditional medicinal use in effectively combating various microorganisms. In the poultry industry, preventing avian virus and bacterial infections is paramount for chicken husbandry. However, using conventional drugs poses potential risks to human health. Garlic, a widely used Asian plant in traditional medicine for various pathologies, has shown potential as an herbal prophylactic remedy against viral and bacterial infections. Recently, researchers explored garlic and its derivatives as a scientific strategy in veterinary practices for diverse purposes, such as improving poultry production characteristics and acting as antibiotic growth promoters. This comprehensive review delves into garlic and its derivatives as preventive and corrective treatments for viral diseases in laying hens and broilers. The paper highlights their potential effectiveness and safety as a natural means to enhance poultry health and welfare while mitigating the risks associated with conventional drug usage in the food industry.

Finding middle ground:Flow regimes designed for salmon and energy value

In regulated rivers,shaping seasonal flows to recover species at risk depends on understanding when to expect conflicts with competing water users and when their interests are ***-objective optimization can be used to reveal such conflicts and *** species are involved,multi-objective optimization is challenged by the need to simulate complex species responses to flow ***,we addressed that challenge by developing a simplified salmon model(Quantus)that defines cohorts of salmon by the river section and time in which they were *** in these space-time cohorts are tracked from the time redds(nests)are constructed until the cohort exits the tributary en route to the *** this study,we modeled seasonal patterns in energy value and developed a Pareto-optimal frontier of seasonal flow patterns to maximize in-river salmon survival and hydropower *** flow regimes were characterized by two pulse flows varying in magnitude,timing,and duration and constrained by a total annual flow near the historical *** analysis revealed times when economic and salmon objectives were aligned and times when they *** flows that favored higher energy value were timed to meet demand during extreme *** salmon and hydropower objectives produced optimal flow regimes with pulse flows in early summer,but only solutions favoring hydropower value included high flows in *** favoring higher age-0 salmon survival provided an extended pulse flow in late winter/early spring,which suggests that access to productive floodplain habitat allowed faster growth and earlier out-migration and reduced the need for higher temperature-moderating flows later in *** flows were also higher among solutions favoring salmon over *** tools used to produce these results can help to design simplified seasonal flow regimes by revealing compromise solutions that satisfy both fish and energy producers

Cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)is the second most frequent primary malignant neoplasm of the hepatobiliary ***,CCA is often diagnosed at an advanced stage,when potentially curative surgical treatments are not *** probability of achieving complete resection in patients who undergo surgery is about 25%(1)and even when complete tumor removal is achieved,the risk of recurrence is greater than 50%.Identification and validation of reliable biomarkers is crucial for the early detection,accurate diagnosis,appropriate staging/prognosis,therapy selection and effective monitoring of patients with biliary tract cancers(BTCs)(Figure 1).Achieving early diagnosis remains a challenge to improve survival and,although many promising biomarkers have been identified(2),to date none have reached clinical practice.

Effect of magnesium on the aluminothermic reduction rate of zinc oxide obtained from spent alkaline battery anodes for the preparation of Al–Zn–Mg alloys

The aluminothermic reduction of zinc oxide（ZnO） from alkaline battery anodes using molten Al may be a good option for the elaboration of secondary 7000-series alloys. This process is affected by the initial content of Mg within molten Al, which decreases the surface tension of the molten metal and conversely increases the wettability of ZnO particles. The effect of initial Mg concentration on the aluminothermic reduction rate of ZnO was analyzed at the following values： 0.90wt%, 1.20wt%, 4.00t%, 4.25wt%, and 4.40wt%. The ZnO particles were incorporated by mechanical agitation using a graphite paddle inside a bath of molten Al maintained at a constant temperature of 1123 K and at a constant agitation speed of 250 r/min, the treatment time was 240 min and the ZnO particle size was 450？500 mesh. The results show an increase in Zn concentration in the prepared alloys up to 5.43wt% for the highest initial concentration of Mg. The reaction products obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the efficiency of the reaction was measured on the basis of the different concentrations of Mg studied.

The interest in dynamic modulation of light by ultra-thin materials exhibiting insulator–metal phase transition,such as VO_(2),has rapidly grown due to the myriad industrial applications,including smart windows and optical ***,for applications in the telecommunication spectral band,the light modulation through a thin VO_(2) film is low due to the presence of strong material ***,we demonstrate tailored nanostructuring of VO_(2) to dramatically enhance its transmission modulation,reaching a value as high as 0.73,which is 2 times larger than the previous modulation *** resulting designs,including free-topology optimization,demonstrate the fundamental limit in acquiring the desired optical performance,including achieving positive or negative transmission *** results on nanophotonic management of lossy nanostructured films open new opportunities for applications of VO_(2) metasurfaces.

Heat shock factor 1(HSF1)is abnormally degraded in Huntington’s disease(HD):HD is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severe cognitive and motor *** is caused by a CAG repeat expansion within exon 1 of the huntingtin(HTT)gene(The Huntington’s Disease Collaborative Research Group,1993).These expansions lead to the production of an aberrant mutant huntingtin protein(mHTT)that is prone to misfolding and *** and aggregation of mHTT is present in virtually all cell types in the body but preferentially affects medium spiny neurons of the striatum,a brain region that controls movement and some forms of *** of mHTT leads to,but not only,transcriptional dysregulation,DNA damage,mitochondrial dysfunction and excitatory synaptic failure ultimately causing neuronal ***,the molecular mechanisms by which mHTT exerts these defects are still unclear.

Dielectric metasurfaces play an increasingly important role in enhancing optical nonlinear generations owing to their ability to support strong light-matter interactions based on Mie-type multipolar *** to metasurfaces composed of the periodic arrangement of nanoparticles,inverse,so-called,membrane metasurfaces offer unique possibilities for supporting multipolar resonances,while maintaining small unit cell size,large mode volume and high field enhancement for enhancing nonlinear frequency ***,we theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of bound states in the continuum(BICs)from silicon dimer-hole membrane *** demonstrate that our BIC-formed resonance features a strong and tailorable electric near-field confinement inside the silicon membrane ***,we show that by tuning the gap between the holes,one can open a leaky channel to transform these regular BICs into quasi-BICs,which can be excited directly under normal plane wave *** prove the capabilities of such metasurfaces,we demonstrate the conversion of an infrared image to the visible range,based on the Third-harmonic generation(THG)process with the resonant membrane *** results suggest a new paradigm for realising efficient nonlinear photonics metadevices and hold promise for extending the applications of nonlinear structuring surfaces to new types of all-optical near-infrared imaging technologies.
