Objectives: Early identification of patients with the novel coronavirus induced-disease 2019 (COVID-19) and pneumonia is currently challenging. Few data are available on validated scores predictive of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The Portuguese Society of Intensive Care (PSIC) proposed a risk score whose main goals were to predict a higher probability of COVID-19 and optimize hospital resources, adjusting patients’ intervention. This study aimed to validate the PSIC risk score applied to inpatients with pneumonia. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 207 patients with pneumonia admitted to a suspected/confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection specialized ward (20/03 to 20/05/2020) was performed. Score variables were analyzed to determine the significance of the independent predictive variables on the probability of a positive SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR test. The binary logistic regression modeling approach was selected. The best cut-off value was obtained with the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve together with the evaluation of the discriminatory power through the Area Under the Curve (AUC). Limited data is available on the coronavirus disease 2019(CoVID-19),critical illness rate,and in-hospital mortality in the African *** study investigates determinants of critical illness and in-hospital mortality among CoVID-19 patients in *** conducted a retrospective cohort study at Kenyatta National Hospital(KNH)in *** logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression were employed to determine predictor factors for intensive care unit(ICU)admission and in-hospital mortality,*** addition,the Kaplan-Meier model was used to compare the survival times using log-rank *** a result,346(19.3%)CoVID-19 patients were admitted to ICU,and 271(15.1%)*** majority of those admitted to the hospital were male,1,137(63.4%)and asymptomatic,1,357(75.7%).The most prevalent clinical features were shortness of breath,fever,and dry *** addition,older age,male,health status,patient on oxygen(o2),oxygen saturation levels(SPo2),headache,dry cough,comorbidities,obesity,cardiovascular diseases(CVDs),diabetes,chronic lung disease(CLD),and malignancy/cancer can predicate the risk of ICU admission,with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC-roc)of 0.90(95%confidence interval[CI]:0.88–0.92).Survival analysis indicated 271(15.1%)patients died and identified older age,male,headache,shortness of breath,health status,patient on oxygen,SPo2,headache,comorbidity,CVDs,diabetes,CLD,malignancy/cancer,and smoking as risk factors for mortality(AUC-roc:0.90,95%CI:0.89–0.91).This is the first attempt to explore predictors for ICU admission and hospital mortality among CoVID-19 patients in Kenya.

Introduction: To determine the possibility of utilizing total lymphocyte counts (TLC) instead of CD4 counts in the initiation and management of patients with HIV on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The commencement of HAART CD4 lymphocytes has been employed in the management HIV. However it has been found that determination of CD4 counts is expensive and somewhat laborious to perform in already overburdened healthcare systems especially in the developing countries. Methodology: Five hundred and three (503) consenting patients already on HAART (commenced at CD4 count o attended our HIV clinic between February 2014 and February 2015 were enrolled into the study. The patients had already been diagnosed as HIV positive. Kappa statistic was computed as a measure of reliability of TLC. Various cut-off marks for TLC in respect of the CD4 counts were determined in addition to the computation of both sensitivity and specificity. Receiver operating curves (roc), showing area under the curve indicating agreement in classification, were plotted. Results: Majority of patients were female (73.8%). Most of the patients were in the age range of 25 - 34 years (37.2%). Males were found to be significantly older than females (P operating curves (roc) revealed that 4 out of 10 patients would be missed using total lymphocyte count (TLC) as the indicator for commencement of HAART. A low correlation coefficient and Kappa statistic r = 0.18, and K = 0.20 respectively, were observed between TLCs and CD4 counts. Conclusion: Total lymphocyte count is not a suitable alternative to CD4 counts in the management of HIV/AIDS.

objectives: Dengue virus (DENV) infection is a mosquito-borne disease that stands out as one of the major public health issues and has a wide-ranging geographical distribution throughout the tropics and subtropics. The general alarming increase in the number of cases over the last two decades can be attributed to an extent by the change in national practices to keeping records and reporting dengue to the Ministries of Health, and WHo. Dengue diagnosis is routinely carried out by detection of dengue virus (DENV) antigen NS1 (Non-structural Antigen 1) and/or anti-DENV IgM/IgG antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). This study compared the performance of three RDTs and one ELISA used for dengue diagnosis in southeastern, Nigeria. Design: This study adopted a cross-sectional design that included prospective hospital-based surveillance of cases among febrile participants attending two major health facilities within the southeastern region of Nigeria. In this study, 338 HIV-infected participants from two teaching hospitals in Nigeria’s southeast were systematically tested for Dengue with four methods: NS1 RDT, IgG RDT, IgM RDT, and NS1 ELISA. Their specificities and sensitivities were compared, as well as their level of concordance. Their respective performances were also evaluated using the Receivers operational curve (roc). Results: out of the 338 patients, the dengue prevalence from the four dengue diagnostic methods Dengue virus NS1 ELISA, NS1 RDT, IgM and IgG seropositivity were 8.9%, 0.6%, 5.6%, and 8.0%, respectively. The Dengue IgM RDT test indicated 36.8% sensitivity, 92.8% specificity, the IgG anti-dengue specific test indicated 29.6% sensitivity, 92.9% specificity and the dengue NS1 RDT test indicated 3.3% sensitivity, 99.4% specificity when compared with the Dengue NSI Elisa test method as a reference method. Conclusion: The use of NSI ELISA for DENV diagnosis showed good performance and the RDTs showed,
