A methodology for quantitative assessment of the features and capabilities of software frameworks for model composition

A software framework is an infrastructure or architecture intended to enable the integration and interoperation of a set of software components.A specialized type of software frameworks are those specifically designed to support the composition of models or other components within a simulation *** frameworks are intended to simplify the process of assembling a complex model or simulation system from simpler component models as well as to promote the reuse of the component *** different types of software frameworks for model composition have been designed and implemented;the various framework types have different component types,processes for composing models,and intended *** different framework types and the implemented examples of them vary widely in terms of features and *** alternative frameworks so as to assess their likely utility for a specific application has heretofore been largely subjective and qualitative,and consequently of uncertain *** address this issue an assessment methodology specifically designed for comparing model composition frameworks is developed and *** methodology employs a quantitative metric based on a set of well-defined criteria relating to the features and capabilities of simulation frameworks and is intended to be objective and *** methodology is illustrated and demonstrated by applying it to a set of existing model composition *** assessment results suggest that using the methodology can,at a minimum,improve the objectivity and reliability of framework selection *** assessment criteria may also be useful as guidelines when designing and developing a framework.

A Study on the Gas-Solid Particle Flows in a Needle-Free drug delivery device

different systems have been used over the years to deliver drug particles to the human skin for pharmaceutical effect. Research has been done to improve the performance and flexibility of these systems. In recent years a unique system called the transdermal drug delivery has been developed. Transdermal drug delivery opened a new door in the field of drug delivery as it is more flexible and offers better performance than the conventional systems. The principle of this system is to accelerate drug particles with a high speed gas flow. Among different transdermal drug delivery systems we will concentrate on the contour shock tube system in this paper. A contoured shock tube is consists of a rupture chamber, a shock tube and a supersonic nozzle section. The drug particles are retained between a set of bursting diaphragm. When the diaphragm is ruptured at a certain pressure, a high speed unsteady flow is initiated through the shock tube which accelerates the particles. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate and analyze the flow field. The dPM (discrete phase method) is used to model the particle flow. As an unsteady flow is initiated though the shock tube the drag correlation proposed by Igra et al is used other than the standard drag correlation. The particle velocities at different sections including the nozzle exit are investigated under different operating conditions. Static pressure histories in different sections in the shock tube are investigated to analyze the flow field. The important aspects of the gas and particle dynamics in the shock tube are discussed and analyzed in details.

Hydro-mechanical interaction effects and channelling in threedimensional fracture networks undergoing growth and nucleation

Navigation and Control of the PRISMA Formation： In-Orbit Experience

This paper presents flight results and lessons learned from the Spaceborne Autonomous Formation Flying Experiment （SAFE） conducted by the German Space Operations Center in the frame of the Swedish PRISMA technology demonstration mission. PR1SMA involves two fully autonomous formation-flying spacecraft which have been launched in June 2010 in a dawn/dusk orbit at an altitude of 750 km. SAFE represents one of the first demonstrations in low Earth orbit of an advanced guidance, navigation and control system for dual-spacecraft formations. Innovative techniques based on carrier-phase differential GPS （Global Positioning System）, relative eccentricity/inclination vectors and impulsive maneuvering are validated and tuned in orbit to achieve centimeter accurate real-time relative navigation, reliable formation keeping at the meter level and flexible formation reconfiguration capabilities. The technologies demonstrated within SAFE are considered as key precursors of future distributed satellite systems for unrivaled remote sensing and space exploration.

Structural plasticity is critical for the functional diversity of neurons in the *** autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE)is the most commonly used model for multiple sclerosis(MS),successfully mimicking its key pathological features(inflammation,demyelination,axonal loss,and gliosis)and clinical symptoms(motor and non-motordysfunctions).Recentstudieshave demonstrated the importance of synaptic plasticity in EAE *** the present study,we investigated the features of behavioral alteration and hippocampal structural plasticity in EAE-affected mice in the early phase(11 days post-immunization,dPI)and chronic phase(28dPI).EAE-affected mice exhibited hippocampus-related behavioral dysfunction in the open field test during both early and chronic *** complexity was largely affected in the cornu ammonis 1(CA1)and CA3 apical and dentate gyrus(dG)subregions of the hippocampus during the chronic phase,while this effect was only noted in the CA1 apical subregion in the early ***,dendritic spine density was reduced in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 apical/basal and dG subregions in the early phase of EAE,but only reduced in the dG subregion during the chronic ***,mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines(Il1β,Tnfα,and Ifnγ)and glial cell markers(Gfap and Cd68)were significantly increased,whereas the expression of activity-regulated cytoskeletonassociated protein(ARC)was reduced during the chronic ***,exposure to the aforementioned cytokines in primary cultures of hippocampal neurons reduced dendritic complexity and ARC *** cultures of hippocampal neurons also showed significantly reduced extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)phosphorylation upon treatment with proinflammatory ***,these results suggest that autoimmune neuroinflammation alters structural plasticity in the hippocampus,possibly through the ERK-ARC pathway,indicating that this alteration may be associated with hi

Electrical discharge treatments of synthetic dyeing wastewater were carried out with two different systems： underwater pulsed electrical discharge （UPEd） and underwater dielectric barrier discharge （UdBd）. Reactive Blue 4 （RB4） and Acid Red 4 （AR4） were used as model contaminants for the synthetic wastewater. The performance of the aforementioned systems was compared with respect to the chromaticity removal and the energy requirement. The results showed that the present electrical discharge systems were very effective for degradation of the dyes. The dependences of the dye degradation rate on treatment time, initial dye concentration, electrical energy, and the type of working gas including air, 02, and N2 were examined. The change in the initial dye concentration did not largely affect the degradation of either RB4 or AR4. The energy delivered to the UPEd system was only partially utilized for generating reactive species capable of degrading the dyes, leading to higher energy requirement than the UdBd system. Among the working gases, the best performance was observed with O2. As the degradation proceeded, the concentration of total dissolved solids and the solution conductivity kept increasing while pH showed a decreasing trend, revealing that the dyes were effectively mineralized.

Temperature-Responsive Tensile Actuator Based on Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube Yarn

Many temperature indicators or sensors show color changes for materials used in food and medical ***, they are not helpful for a color-blind person or children who lack judgment. In this paper, we introduce simply fabricated and more useful low-temperature indicator(~30 °C) for devices that actuates using paraffin-infiltrated multiwalled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) coiled yarn. The density difference of MWCNT yarn provides large strain(~330 %)when heat causes the melted polymer to move. Furthermore, the MWCNT yarn decreases the melting point of *** properties allow control of the actuating temperature. In addition, mechanical strength was enhanced by MWCNT than previously reported temperature-responsive actuators based on shape memory polymers. This simply fabricated temperature indicator can be applied in latching devices for medical and biological fields.

Sex differences in cognition and their relationship to male mate choice

Male cognition has gained recognition as an important potential player in sexual selection. A number of studies have found positive correlations between male sexual signals and cognitive performance an d/or female pref ere nces for males with better cog nitive performance, although other studies have not fou nd these relati on ships. Sex roles can differ dramatically, and sex differen ces in selection on cog nition likely follow from the different tasks associated with these sex roles. Here, using threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, a species with clearly diverge nt sex roles and mutual mate choice, we focus on the cognitive trait inhibitory control because males must differentially respond to reproductive females versus other sticklebacks while defending territories and refrain from eating eggs and fry while performing paternal care. We presented fish with a detour task four times over a period of 7 days, allowing us to assess initial inhibitory control and improvement over time. We ask 1) whether there are sex differences in inhibitory control and 2) whether male mate choice is associated with female inhibitory control. Although males outperformed females on three different measures of detour task performance across four trials, these differences were largely explained by males being less neophobic than females. Females took more trials to successfully solve the detour task, even after accounting for sex differences in neophobia. Female cognitive abilities, however, were unrelated to the vigor with which males courted them. The equivocal results regarding sex differences in cognitive ability suggest further study given the very different selection pressures each sex experiences.
