liver diseases are a worldwide medical problem because the liver is the principal detoxifying organ and maintains metabolic homeostasis. The liver metabolizes various compounds that produce free radicals(FR).However, antioxidants scavenge FR and maintain the oxidative/antioxidative balance in the liver. When the liver oxidative/antioxidative balance is disrupted, the state is termed oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leadsto deleterious processes in the liver and produces liver diseases. Therefore, restoring antioxidants is essential to maintain homeostasis. One method of restoring antioxidants is to consume natural compounds with antioxidant capacity. The objective of this review is to provide information pertaining to various antioxidants found in food that have demonstrated utility in improving liver diseases.

Response to vernalization and photoperiod are the main determinants controlling the time to flowering in temperate cereals. While the individual genes that determine a plant's response to these environmental signals are well characterized, the combinatorial effect on flowering time of allelic variants for multiple genes remains unresolved. This study investigated the genetic control of flowering-time in a biparental population of spring barley, derived from a wide cross between a late-flowering European and an early-flowering North-American cultivar. While the major flowering time genes are not segregating in the Beka ×logan cross, large variation in flowering was observed. We identified five QTl, with both parents found to contribute early alleles. The catalog of QTl discovered aligns with several candidate genes affecting flowering time in barley. The combination of particular alleles at HvCEN, HvElF3 and HvFT1 in logan are responsible for the earliness of this cultivar. Interestingly, earliness for flowering could be further enhanced, with Beka found to contribute three early alleles, including a QTl colocating with a HvFD-like gene, suggesting that there are diverse aspects of the flowering-time pathway that have been manipulated in these two cultivars. Epistatic interactions between flowering-time QTl or candidate genes were observed in field data and confirmed under controlled conditions. The results of this study link photoperiod-dependent flowering-time genes with earliness per se genes into a single model, thus providing a unique framework that can be used by geneticists and breeders to optimize flowering time in barley.

Anemia of diverse etiology is a common complication of chronic liver diseases. The causes of anemia include acute or chronic gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and hypersplenism secondary to portal hypertension. Severe hepatocellular disease predisposes to hemorrhage because of impaired blood coagulation caused by deficiency of blood coagulation factors synthesized by hepatocytes, and/or thrombocytopenia. Aplastic anemia, which is characterized by pancytopenia and hypocellular bone marrow, may follow the development of hepatitis. Its presentation includes progressive anemia and hemorrhagic manifestations. Hematological complications of combination therapy for chronic viral hepatitis include clinically signif icant anemia, secondary to treatment with ribavirin and/or interferon. Ribavirininduced hemolysis can be reversed by reducing the dose of the drug or discontinuing it altogether. Interferons may contribute to anemia by inducing bone marrow suppression. Alcohol ingestion is implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease and may contribute to associated anemia. In patients with chronic liver disease, anemia may be exacerbated by defi ciency of folic acid and/or vitamin B12 that can occur secondary to inadequate dietary intake or malabsorption.

For solving the computationally intensive problem encountered by the discrete element method(DEM)in simulating large-scale engineering problems,it is essential to establish a numerical model that can effectively simulate large-scale *** this study,the coarse-graining effect of a linear-Mindlin with bonding model was studied in the unconfined compression strength(UCS)and Brazilian tensile strength(BTS)*** found that the main reason for the coarse-graining effect of the BTS tests is that the type I fracture toughness is positively correlated with the size of the *** on the results analysis and fracture mechanics,the coarse-grained(CG)modeling theory was combined with a bonded particle model(BPM)for the first time and a coarse-grained bonded particle model(CG-BPM)was developed,which can be effectively used to model the tensile strength of large-scale rocks with different particle *** excavation damage zone(EDZ)in an underground research laboratory(URl)was selected as an application case,which shows that the coarse-grained bonding model presented in this paper is more accurate and reliable than the traditional one in large-scale rock simulation,at least in the scenario where tensile failure is dominant.
