Conventional photoluminescence(PL)yields at most one emitted photon for each absorption ***(or quantum cutting)materials can yield more than one photon by virtue of energy transfer processes between luminescent *** this work,we introduce Gd2O2S:Tm^(3+) as a multi-photon quantum *** can convert near-infrared,visible,or ultraviolet photons into two,three,or four infrared photons of,1800 nm,*** cross-relaxation steps between Tm^(3+) ions that lead to quantum cutting are identified from(time-resolved)PL as a function of the Tm^(3+) concentration in the crystal.A model is presented that reproduces the way in which the Tm^(3+) concentration affects both the relative intensities of the various emission lines and the excited state dynamics and providing insight in the quantum cutting ***,we discuss the potential application of Gd2O2S:Tm^(3+) for spectral conversion to improve the efficiency of next-generation photovoltaics.

AIM: To evaluate the long term clinical results of mechanical no-alcohol-assisted laser epithelial keratomileusis(LASEK) versus standard photorefractive keratectomy(PRK) for low-moderate ***: Twenty-five eyes treated with LASEK and twenty-five eyes treated with PRK were evaluated with a mean follow-up duration of 60 mo. Mechanical separation of the epithelium was performed with blunt spatula and without application of alcohol. Laser ablation was performed with the MEL-70 excimer laser. All patients were examined daily until epithelial closure; at 1, 3, 6,and 12 mo, and every year subsequently. Main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),manifest refraction, haze, efficacy and safety ***: Twenty-one eyes and 22 eyes completed follow-up of 60 mo in LASEK and PRK group respectively. Manifest refraction at 60 mo follow-up was-0.01 and 0.26 in LASEK and PRK group respectively. In the LASEK group mean UDVA and mean CDVA after60 mo were 20/22 and 20/20 respectively(P >0.01). In the PRK group mean UDVA and mean CDVA at 60 mo follow-up were 20/20 and 20/20 after 60mo(P >0.01). The efficacy indexes were 0.87 and 0.95, and the safety indexes were1.25 and 1.4 respectively for LASEK group and PRK ***: Both standard PRK and no-alcohol LASEK offer safe and effective correction of low-moderate myopia in the long term without any statistically significant difference between the two groups.

dear Editor,We read with great interest the article by Abou Samra et al[1] about the management of selected keratoconus *** would like to congratulate the authors for the originality of this study, but in our opinion there are some points that need to be clarified. The authors included in this study 13 eyes of 11 patients. This number seems to be too small, to make a definite conclusion.

Binary asymmetric nanocrystals （BNCs）, composed of a photoactive TiO2 nanorod joined with a superparamagnetic γ-Fe203 spherical domain, were embedded in polyethylene glycol modified phospholipid micelle and successfully bioconjugated to a suitably designed peptide containing an RGD motif. BNCs represent a relevant multifunctional nanomaterial, owing to the coexistence of two distinct domains in one particle, characterized by high photoactivity and magnetic properties, that is particularly suited for use as a phototherapy and hyperthermia agent as well as a magnetic probe in biological imaging. We selected the RGD motif in order to target integrin expressed on activated endothelial cells and several types of cancer cells. The prepared RGD-peptide/BNC conjugates, comprehensively monitored by using complementary optical and structural techniques, demon- strated a high stability and uniform dispersibility in biological media. The cytotoxicity of the RGD-peptide/BNC conjugates was studied in vitro. The cellular uptake of RGD-peptide conjugates in the cells, assessed by means of two distinct approaches, namely confocal microscopy analysis and emission spectroscopy determination in cell lysates, displayed selectivity of the RGD-peptide-BNC conjugate for the cw]33 integrin. These RGD-peptide-BNC conjugates have a high potential for theranostic treatment of cancer.

TO THE EDITORdesloratidine (Clarinex, Neoclarytin, Aerius, Azomyr, Opulis,Allex), the principal active metabolite of loratadine is itself a new oral antihistamine drug Its main indications are for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU). The pharmacologic profile of desloratidine offers particular benefits, in terms of histamine H1-receptor binding potency and H1 selectivity. It has a half-life of 21-27 h, permitting a once-daily dose. No specific precautions are required with respect to its administration in renal or hepatic failure. No clinically relevant racial or gender variations in the disposition of desloratidine have been noted.We present here a clinical case of acute reversible idiosyncratic liver toxicity, related to its administration.
