AIM： To evaluate the effects of different types of dietary fats on the hepatic lipid content and oxidative stress parameters in rat liver with experimental non-alcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD）. METHODS： A total of 32 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups. The rats in the control group （n = 8） were on chow diet （Group 1）, rats （n = 6） on methionine choline-deficient diet （MCDD）（Group 2）, rats （n = 6） on MCDD enriched with olive oil （Group 3）, rats （n = 6） on MCDD with fish oil （Group 4） and rats （n = 6） on MCDD with butter fat （Group 5）. After 2 mo, blood and liver sections were examined for lipids composition and oxidative stress parameters. RESULTS： The liver weight/rat weight ratio increased in all treatment groups as compared with the control group. Severe fatty liver was seen in MCDD ＋ fish oil and in MCDD ＋ butter fat groups, but not in MCDD and MCDD ＋ olive oil groups. The increase in hepatic triglycerides （TG） levels was blunted by 30% in MCDD ＋ olive oil group （0.59 ±0.09） compared with MCDD group （0.85 ±0.04, P 〈 0.004）, by 37% compared with MCDD ＋ fish oil group （0.95 ±0.07, P 〈 0.001）, and by 33% compared with MCDD ＋ butter group （0.09 ±0.1, P 〈 0.01）. The increase in serum TG was lowered by 10% in MCDD ＋ olive oil group （0.9 ±0.07） compared with MCDD group （1.05 ±0.06）. Hepatic cholesterol increased by 15-fold in MCDD group [（0.08 ±0.02, this increment was blunted by 21% in MCDD ＋ fish oil group （0.09 ±0.02）]. In comparison with the control group, ratio of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-6/omega-3 increased in MCDD ＋ olive oil, MCDD ＋ fish oil and MCDD ＋ butter fat groups by 345-, 30- and 397-fold, respectively. In comparison to MCDD group （1.58 ±0.08）, hepatic MDA contents in MCDD ＋ olive oil （3.3 ±0.6）, MCDD ＋ fish oil （3.0 ±0.4）, and MCDD ＋ butter group （2.9 ±0.36） were increased by 108%, 91% and 87%, respectively （P 〈 0.004）. The‘seedless’table grape industry relies mainly on stenospermocarpic cultivars,in which endosperm abortion results in berries with seed rudiments and low levels of bioactive gibberellin(GA).Application of GA to enhance berry sizing in these cultivars is often accompanied by adverse effects,one of which is increased proportions of very small berries(termed shot berries).Manual removal of these berries,which is essential to improve uniformity and market value,increases production cost and exposes the cluster to *** the physiological causes of shot berry formation is thus of both scientific and practical *** study focuses on understanding the GA-mediated regulation of shot berry formation in Vitis vinifera *** Sweet,known for a high proportion of shot berries,which severely damage cluster *** GA is known to induce the parthenocarpic fruit set,we first tested the assumption that the parthenocarpic nature of a fruitlet is a primary cause for shot berry *** then examined the consequence of the flower load on the proportion of shot berries in the *** data suggests that:(1)contrary to prior assumptions,the parthenocarpic nature of a fruitlet is not the primary cause for shot berry development,demonstrated by the fact that parthenocarpic fruitlets develop into a full-size berries;(2)the proportion of shot berries on a cluster is a function of the initial flower load on the inflorescence,with high initial flower load resulting in greater shot berry percentage in the cluster;(3)GA treatment bypasses the natural regulation of flower load,resulting in high fruitlet density and increased competition among fruitlets;(4)variation of flower load within the cluster influences berry size uniformity to a greater extent than does the variation in number of cluster per *** identity of the factors that determine the fate of a given flower on a high-load cluster remains an open question.

Investigating Road Safety Management Systems in the European Countries: Patterns and Particularities

A road safety management (RSM) system can be defined as “a complex institutional structure that involves cooperating and interacting bodies which support the tasks and processes necessary for the prevention and reduction of road traffic injuries”. RSM should promote the road safety progress of the country. However, the details of this relationship are generally lacking. This study explored the RSM systems in European countries based on the information collected through interviews with experts and officials, in each country, and using a “good practice” criteria questionnaire. The dataset included 14 countries with fifty items related to five RSM areas: institutional organization;policy formulation and adoption;policy implementation and funding;monitoring and evaluation;scientific support, information and capacity building. Cluster analyses and correlations were used to identify country groups with similar RSM components, to recognize typical RSM structures if available and to examine the relationship between RSM and road safety performance of the countries. The findings showed that all the countries are different when RSM systems are considered as a whole, making it impossible to identify typical RSM structures or a single best working model at a national level. However, it is possible to compare countries when the RSM areas are considered separately, where the clusters of countries recognized by the study present the patterns common for those European countries. Across the analyses, a number of countries with a consistently higher and lower availability of the RSM components were identified, enabling a final countries’ ranking into a number of groups. The latter actually reflects the level of RSM in the country, in terms of its correspondence to the “good practice” criteria. A further analysis indicated a positive correlation between the higher level of the RSM system and better safety performance of the countries.

Papyrus, Forest Resources and Rural Livelihoods: A Village Computable General Equilibrium Analysis from Northern Zambia

Papyrus is increasingly suggested as an alternative bioenergy source to reduce the pressure on forest ecosystems. However, there are few studies on the economic viability of papyrus wetlands and the benefits for local communities. We construct a village Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to examine whether papyrus harvesting and processing has the potential to improve local livelihoods and simultaneously counteract pressure on local forest resources. We apply the CGE model to a village in northern Zambia where overexploitation of forest resources to produce energy from firewood and charcoal poses a serious problem. The analysis is based on survey data?from 105 households collected in 2015. The model results show that papyrus briquetting would be a possible?alternative biofuel and that this technology improves household income and utility through?labor?reallocations. Higher opportunity costs lead to households switching from firewood extraction and charcoal production activities to papyrus harvesting and processing to produce bioenergy. Replacing energy supplies from firewood and charcoal with papyrus briquettes results in substitution effects between forest land and wetland and thereby reduces the pressure on local forest resources. The CGE approach allows for an economy-wide ex-ante analysis at village level and can support management decisions to ensure the success of papyrus bioenergy interventions.

Safety Management of Non-urban Roads in Israel： An Application of Empirical Bayes Evaluation

A safety management system was established to provide for continuously improved safety levels of the non-urban roads in Israel. One of the main functions of the system lies in the identification and treatment of HL （hazardous locations） on existing roads. In line with the state-of-the art in road safety, the HL identification is based on an empirical Bayes evaluation, where an HL is recognized using a high positive difference between the number of accidents expected at the site and that predicted for similar sites. The latter is estimated using safety performance functions that were developed for local conditions, including single- and dual-carriageway road sections, and various types of intersections： signalized/non-signalized, three- and four-legged. The procedure of HL identification is applied annually, serving as a basis for the working programs on road infrastructure improvements. Positive safety effects of such improvements were recently reported in the country. These activities comply with the Road Infrastructure Safety Directive that was recently introduced in the European Union.

藏语在构词和构形中都有一些表示语法意义的轻读成分,如构词的词缀和表示语法意义的助词,可以统称为附缀语素。甘孜话这些附缀语素都会与前面的词根或词发生语音的减缩变化,形成大量真性复元音和新的形态变化方式,出现复杂的历时和共时的语音和语法变化。这种减缩变化调整了语音和语法的格局,是甘孜话语音和语法演变中的一个重要变化方式和特征,也是藏语康方言中比较少见的现象,研究这种涉及语音和语法两方面的重要现象,无论对藏语或藏缅语言语音、语法的共时和历时研究都有重要的意义。
