Elevated fibrinogen plasma level is not an independent predictor of poor prognosis in a large cohort of Western patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer

AIM To evaluate the clinical significance of the preoperative fibrinogen plasma level as a prognostic marker after surgery for colorectal *** This retrospective study analysed 652 patients undergoing surgery for stage Ⅰ-Ⅳ colorectal cancer between January 2005 and December 2012, at the Division of General Surgery A, University of Verona Hospital Trust, in whom preoperative fibrinogen plasma values were assessed at baseline. Fibrinogen is involved in tumourigenesis as well as tumour progression in several malignancies. Correlations between preoperative plasma fibrinogen values and clinicopathological characteristics were investigated. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed to identify factors associated with overall and tumour-related *** Among the 652 patients, the fibrinogen value was higher than the threshold of 400 mg/dL in 345 patients(53%). The preoperative mean ± SD of fibrinogen was 426.2 ± 23.2 mg/dL(median: 409 mg/dL; range: 143-1045 mg/d L). Preoperative fibrinogen values correlated with age(P = 0.003), completeness of tumour resection, potentially curative vs palliative(P < 0.001), presence of systemic metastasis(P < 0.001), depth of tumour invasion p T(P < 0.001), nodes involvement p N(P = 0.001) and CEA serum level(P < 0.001). The mean fibrinogen value(± SD) was 395.6 ± 120.4 mg/d L in G1 tumours, 424.1 ± 121.4 mg/dL in G2 tumours and 453.4 ± 131.6 mg/dL in G3 tumours(P = 0.045). The overall survival and tumourrelated survival were significantly higher in patients with fibrinogen values ≤ 400 mg/d L(P < 0.001). However, hyperfibrinogenemia did not retain statistical significance regarding either overall(P = 0.313) or tumour-related survival(P = 0.355) after controlling for other risk factors in a multivariate *** Preoperative fibrinogen levels correlate with cancer severity but do not help in predicting patient prognosis after colorectal cancer surgery.

The distribution of photo-crosslinkable moieties onto a protein backbone can affect a biomaterial’s crosslinking behavior, and therefore also its mechanical and biological properties. A profound insight in this respect is essential for biomaterials exploited in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In the present work, photo-crosslinkable moieties have been introduced on the primary amine groups of: (i) a recombinant collagen peptide (RCPhC1) with a known amino acid (AA) sequence, and (ii) bovine skin collagen (COL BS) with an unknown AA sequence. The degree of substitution (DS) was quantified with two conventional techniques: an ortho-phthalic dialdehyde (OPA) assay and ^(1)H NMR spectroscopy. However, neither of both provides information on the exact type and location of the modified AAs. Therefore, for the first time, proteomic analysis was evaluated herein as a tool to identify functionalized AAs as well as the exact position of photo-crosslinkable moieties along the AA sequence, thereby enabling an in-depth, unprecedented characterization of functionalized photo-crosslinkable biopolymers. Moreover, our strategy enabled to visualize the spatial distribution of the modifications within the overall structure of the protein. Proteomics has proven to provide unprecedented insight in the distribution of photo-crosslinkable moieties along the protein backbone, undoubtedly contributing to superior functional biomaterial design to serve regenerative medicine.

This study focuses on the basement structure of the Paraná Basin in South America, based on geological and geophysical data. It is a large intracratonic basin formed from the Late Ordovician until the Cretaceous,when a sequence of continentalflood basalts eruptions covered the entire basin, preceding the break-up of Western Gondwana. Isostatic modeling was applied to large gravity surveys comprising more than 12,000 gravity stations. The residual Bouguer anomaly pattern,representing the crustal contribution of the crystalline basement, as well as the sedimentary and volcanic layers of the basin, reveals similarities between the basement gravity signature and the exposed rock. The stress patterns of the Late Ordovician and Cretaceous tectonic events present a geographically coincident maximum,and the correlation between gravity highs and the main attenuation (beta factor) suggests the presence of some preexistent suture zones. The resultant mosaic of gravity blocks and the location of major faults give support to the presence of an important Proterozoic cratonic feature, here referred to as Paranapanema block.

In this exploratory work,micrometric radiopaque W-Fe-Mn-C coatings were produced by magnetron sputtering plasma deposition,for the first time,with the aim to make very thin Fe-Mn stents trackable by *** power of Fe-13Mn-1.2C target was kept constant at 400 W while that of W target varied from 100 to 400 W producing three different coatings referred to as P100,P200,*** effect of the increased W power on coatings thickness,roughness,structure,corrosion behavior and radiopacity was *** coatings showed a power-dependent thickness and W concentration,different roughness values while a similar and uniform columnar *** amorphous phase was detected for both P100 and P200 coatings while γ-Fe,bcc-W and W_(3)C phases found for ***,P200 and P400 showed a significantly higher corrosion rate(CR)compared to *** presence of W,W_(3)C as well as the Fe amount variation determined two different micro-galvanic corrosion mechanisms significantly changing the CR of coatings,0.26±0.02,59.68±1.21 and 59.06±1.16μm/year for P100,P200 and P400,*** P200 with its most uniform morphology,lowest roughness(RMS=3.9±0.4 nm)and good radiopacity(~6%)appeared the most suitable radiopaque biodegradable coating investigated in this study.

The barcelona clinic liver cancer(BCLC)staging system has been approved as guidance for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)treatment guidelines by the main Western clinical liver *** to the BCLC classification,only patients with a small single HCC nodule without signs of portal hypertension or hyperbilirubinemia should undergo liver *** contrast,patients with intermediate-advanced HCC should be scheduled for palliative therapies,even if the lesion is *** studies report good short-term and long-term outcomes in patients with intermediate-advanced HCC treated by liver ***,this classification has been criticised because it excludes many patients who could benefit from curative *** aim of this review was to evaluate the role of surgery beyond the BCLC *** liver resection can be performed in patients with portal hypertension and well-compensated liver function with a 5-year survival rate of 50%.Surgery also offers good long-term result in selected patients with multiple or large HCCs with a reported 5-year survival rate of over 50%and 40%,*** macrovascular invasion is associated with a poor prognosis,liver resection provides better long-term results than palliative therapies or best supportive ***,researchers have identified several genes whose altered expression influences the prognosis of patients with *** genes may be useful for classifying the biological behaviour of different tumours.A revision of the BCLC classification should be introduced to provide the best treatment strategy and to ensure the best prognosis in patients with HCC.

The latest financial crisis has been impressive for strength, impact, duration, and reduced efficacy of the economic and financial policies adopted by the authorities. We use an original information risk model to contribute to the analysis of the crisis and to suggest some approaches for a possible early diagnosis. Using data referred to the three main financial markets and comparing the latest crisis with the previous one and with long-term quantitative evidence, we find out that the 2007-2009 crisis was very different in the information risk quality. That gap affected the market risk aversion and its equilibrium, reducing the efficacy of the authorities＇ intervention tools mainly based on payoff risk control and efficient market restoration. Since information risk is an endogenous element of the market dynamics that can be independent form contingent levels of market efficiency. Drivers of information risk in the European Markets differed strongly from the US and Japanese ones; that is why some global decisions had low impact while opportunities of local intervention were missed.
