Heart failure is common in older people and its prevalence is *** Heart ＇omics＇ in AGEing（HOMAGE） project aims to provide a biomarker approach that will improve the early diagnosis of heart failure.A large clinical database,based on（1） prospective population studies or（2） cross-sectional,prospective studies or randomized controlled trials（RCTs） of patients at risk for or with overt cardiovascular disease will be constructed to determine most promising ＇omics＇-based biomarkers to identify the risk of developing heart failure and/or *** studies,patient cohorts and RCTs are eligible for inclusion in the common database,if they received ethical approval to obtain and share data and have baseline information on cardiovascular risk ***,the HOMAGE database includes 43,065 subjects,from 20 studies in eight European countries,including healthy subjects from three population studies in France,Belgium and Italy（n = 7,124）,patients with heart failure（n = 4,312） from four cohorts in the UK,Spain and Switzerland and patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease（n = 31,629） in 13 *** is anticipated that more partners will join the consortium and enlarge the pooled *** large merged database will be a useful resource with which to identify candidate biomarkers that play a role in the mechanism underlying the onset and progression of heart failure.

Rethinking the standard trans-cortical approaches in the light of superficial white matter anatomy

A better comprehension of the superficial white matter organization is important in order to minimize potential and avoidable damage to long or intermediate association fibre bundles during every step of a surgical *** recently proposed a technique for cadaver specimen preparation,which seems able to identify a more systematic organization of the superficial white matter ***,the use of the physiological intracranial vascular network for the fixation process allowed us to constantly show main vascular landmarks associated with white matter *** three examples of standard approaches to eloquent areas are herein reanalyzed starting from the first superficial *** insights into the possible surgical trajectories and subsequent quantitative damages of both vessels and white matter fibres can help readapt even the most standard and widely accepted approach trough the brain cortex.A more detailed study of these fine anatomical details may become in the near future a fundamental part of the neurosurgical training and the preoperative planning.

HIGH-ORDER WENO SIMULATIONS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL RESHOCKED RICHTMYER-MESHKOV INSTABILITY TO LATE TIMES:DYNAMICS,DEPENDENCE ON INITIAL CONDITIONS,AND COMPARISONS TO EXPERIMENTAL DATA

The dynamics of the reshocked multi-mode Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is investigated using 513 × 257^2 three-dimensional ninth-order weighted essentially nonoscil- latory shock-capturing simulations. A two-mode initial perturbation with superposed ran- dom noise is used to model the Mach 1.5 air/SF6 Vetter-Sturtevant shock tube experiment. The mass fraction and enstrophy isosurfaces, and density cross-sections are utilized to show the detailed flow structure before, during, and after reshock. It is shown that the mixing layer growth agrees well with the experimentally measured growth rate before and after reshock. The post-reshock growth rate is also in good agreement with the prediction of the Mikaelian model. A parametric study of the sensitivity of the layer growth to the choice of amplitudes of the short and long wavelength initial interfacial perturbation is also pre- sented. Finally, the amplification effects of reshock are quantified using the evolution of the turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent enstrophy spectra, as well as the evolution of the baroclinic enstrophy production, buoyancy production, and shear production terms in the enstrophy and turbulent kinetic transport equations.

The structural phase transition in Ta-NiSes has been envisioned as driven by the formation of an excitonic insulating ***,the role of structural and electronic instabilities on crystal symmetry breaking has yet to be ***,the phase transition in its complementary material Ta_(2)NiS_(5)does not show any experimental hints of an excitonic insulating *** present a microscopic investigation of the electronic and phononic effects involved in the structural phase transition in Ta_(2)NiSe_(5)and Ta-Niss using extensive first-principles *** both materials the crystal symmetries are broken by phonon instabilities,which in tum lead to changes in the electronic bandstructure also observed in the experiment.A total energy landscape analysis shows no tendency towards a purely electronic instability and we find that a sizeable lattice distortion is needed to open a *** conclude that an excitonic instability is not needed to explain the phase transition in both Ta_(2)NiSe_(5)and Ta_(2)NiS_(5).

Development of a fiber optic health monitoring system for aerospace applications

This paper describes our research activity involved in the identification, development and test of a prototype SHM system constituted by optical sensing nodes to measure both temperature and strain on ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTC) materials up to 1000 °C. Commercially available optic devices can operate up to 550 °C. To raise temperature limit up to 1000 °C, custom devices, mainly under development for scientific applications, have been identified. A prototype SHM system has been developed adopting a FBG sensor for temperature measurement and an EFPI sensor in sapphire fiber for strain measurement. The preliminary findings from thermo-mechanical tests indicate that former SHM system is capable of accurately measuring strain at elevated temperatures on UHTC materials.

Over the past decade,several biochemical pathways have been investigated to understand the underlying mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of physical exercise on cognition.1,2 Lourenco et al.,3 in an elegant study published in Nature Medicine,examined the relationship between exercise training and hippocampal memory ***,the authors showed that FNDC5/irisin is an important mediator of beneficial effects of physical exercise in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Patients with chronic cancer pain frequently suffer from severe pain intensity exacerbations.A 60-years old woman had been experiencing Breakthrough Cancer Pain(BTCP) mostly concentrated on shoulders since the resection of the upper right lung lobe one year before,reason why she underwent Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment(TCM).She was diagnosed with *** strong opioids intake during radiotherapy and chemotherapy,she continued to suffer from pain without benefiting from these *** was treated with somatic and auricular acupuncture and cupping technique for 10 sessions,2-3 sessions per week,30 min per *** five/six sessions of treatment the patient felt much better,relieved from the pain with an improving Numeric rating Scale(NRS) and an important improving of Breakthrough Pain Assessment Tool-BAT and Constant-Murley *** cancer patients,acupuncture could represent an effective treatment option.
