Surgical resection and imaging guided treatments play a crucial role in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Although the primary end point of treatment of HCC is survival,radiological response could be a surrogate end point of survival,and has a key role in HCC decision-making ***,radiological assessment of HCC treatment efficacy is often *** are few doubts on the evaluation of surgical resection;in fact,all known tumor sites should be ***,an unenhancing partial linear peripheral halo,in most cases,surrounding a fluid collection reducing in size during follow-up is demonstrated in successfully resected tumor with bipolar radiofrequency electrosurgical *** assessment of locoregional therapies is more controversial and differs between percutaneous ablation(e.g.,radiofrequency ablation and percutaneous ethanol injection)and transarterial treatments(e.g.,conventional transarterial chemoembolization,transarterial chemoembolization with drug eluting beads and radioembolization).Finally,a different approach should be used for new systemic agent that,though not reducing tumor mass,could have a benefit on survival by delaying tumor progression and *** purpose of this brief article is to review HCC imaging appearance after treatment.

IMAGING OF NON-GLANDULAR SUPERFICIAL METASTASES: A COMPARISON OF XERORADIOGRAPHY, ULTRASONO-GRAPHY AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

Between January 1985 and July 1987, 1,622 cancer patients were evaluated to outline the possible applications and limits of various investigative techniques for evaluating metastases. Seventy-three cases with superficial metastases of the dermal-hypodermal (59) layers, of the muscles (11) and of other target organs (3) were included in the *** non-glandular superficial metastases are a relatively rare occurrence, diagnostic imaging techniques are indicated for evaluating their extent and anatomical connections. Secondary neoplasms were studied using the imaging techniques of sono-graphy, computed tomography and *** diagnostic reliability of these three techniques was evaluated, taking into account their ability to determine the extent of metastases and of assessing *** is considered as a satisfactory screening technique, but CT is an even better tool for evaluating the extent and anatomical connections of such lesions. Xeroradiography has been made obsolete by the introduction of the other two techniques.

CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT OF INITIAL BREAST CANCER

The results of conservative surgical techniques (quadrantectomy or turaorectomy), axillary dissection and radiotherapy in 58 patients with initial breast cancer (T1, No, Mo) treated between June 1979 and December 1986 are reported. The disease-free survival rates after 5 and 8 years were 84% and 76% respectively. Four cases developed local recurrences (6.9%); 2 cases developed distant metastases involving lung and bone, and 1 case developed bone metastases without local recurrence. Two patients with local recurrence underwent radical life-saving mastectomy and are now free from *** surgery combined with radiotherapy was shown to be quite effective in controlling initial breast cancer not only in the cases included in our study (T1, No, Mo) but also in cases with N and T2. smaller than 3 cm, as reported in the literature. Prognosis was quite favorable for cases with local recurrence, since control of the disease was still possible through salvage radical mastectomy.
