BACKGROUND Adipose-derived stem cells(ASCs)have been increasingly explored for cell-based medicine because of their numerous advantages in terms of easy availability,high proliferation rate,multipotent differentiation ability and low *** this respect,they have been widely investigated in the last two decades to develop therapeutic strategies for a variety of human pathologies including eye *** ocular diseases involving the retina,various cell types may be affected,such as Müller cells,astrocytes,photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium(RPE),which plays a fundamental role in the homeostasis of retinal tissue,by secreting a variety of growth factors that support retinal *** To test ASC neural differentiation using conditioned medium(CM)from an RPE cell line(ARPE-19).METHODS ASCs were isolated from adipose tissue,harvested from the subcutaneous region of healthy donors undergoing liposuction *** ASC culture conditions were investigated:ASCs cultured in basal Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium(DMEM);ASCs cultured in serum-free DMEM;ASCs cultured in serumfree DMEM/F12;and ASCs cultured in a CM from ARPE-19,a spontaneously arising cell line with a normal karyotype derived from a human *** proliferation rate and viability were assessed by crystal violet and MTT assays at 1,4and 8 d of *** the same time points,ASC neural differentiation was evaluated by immunocytochemistry and western blot analysis for typical neuronal and glial markers:Nestin,neuronal specific enolase(NSE),protein gene product(PGP)9.5,and glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP).RESULTS Depending on the culture medium,ASC proliferation rate and viability showed some significant ***,less dense populations were observed in serum-free cultures,except for ASCs cultured in ARPE-19 serum-free ***,a different cell morphology was seen in these cultures after 8 d of treatment,with more elongated cells,often showing cytoplasmic ramifications.

Objective:To evaluate the frequency of anti-Toxocara *** in an adult healthy ***:The study was performed by interviewing 253 blood donors,from 19 to65 years of age,in a hematological centre in Presidente Prudente,S(?)o Paulo,southeast Brazil.A survey was applied to blood donors in order to evaluate the possible factors associated to the presence of antibodies,including individual(gender and age),socioeconomic(scholarship,familial income and sanitary facilities)and habit information(contact with soil,geophagy,onycophagy and intake of raw/undercooked meat)as well as the presence of dogs or cats in the *** test was run for detection of the anti-Toxocara *** *** analysis followed by logistic regression was performed to evaluate the potential risk factors associated to ***:The overall prevalence observed in this study was 8.7%(22/253).Contact with soil was the unique risk factor associated with the presence of antibodies(P=0.0178;0R=3.52;95%CI=1.244-9.995).Conclusions:The results of this study reinforce the necessity in promoting preventive public health measures,even for healthy adult individual,particularly those related to the deworming of pets to avoid the soil contamination,and hygiene education of the population.

The fatty acids composition and the related health lipid indices (IA, atherogenic and IT thrombogenic) of Blue Fin Tuna’s (Thunnus thynnus L.) raw roe and their cured product bottarga, both considered a delicacy, were studied. The fatty acid (FA) composition of tuna’s roe and bottarga showed a relevant proportion (40.87% and 36.62% respectively) of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) with a prevalence of the n – 3 series, that showed values almost ten folds higher than those of n – 6 fatty acids, in both classes of analyzed samples. The IA and IT indices resulted comparable in tuna’s roe and in the bottarga samples respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detailed report on the fatty acids composition and the related lipid health indices in tuna’s raw roe and in their cured product “bottarga”.

Objective:To evaluate in vitro effects of Tagetes minuta L. essential oil(TEO) on L3 Anisakis larvae type 1. Methods:In order to evaluate the potential use of Tagetes minuta essential oil against L3 Anisakis larvae three different media were tested:1) a saline solution(SS); 2) an industrial marinating solution; 3) sunflower seeds oil(SO). For each media and concentrations of TEO(0.1%,0.5%,1.0% and 5.0% v/v),20 parasites were introduced into plastic Petri dishes(diameter 90 mm) and maintained at room temperature. As controls,larvae were maintained without TEO under identical experimental conditions in SS,MS and SO. A total of 900 larvae were tested. The normalized mean viability,LT100,LT50 and the percentage of inactivation at 24 hours were calculated. Results:In vitro tests revealed a complete inactivation of parasites in saline solution after 2 hours with 5% and 1% of TEO. In marinating solution,a complete inactivation of parasites was observed after 4 hours at all concentrations used. A slower activity for all TEO concentration was reported in SO. Conclusions:The results obtained,showing a strong activity against Anisakis larvae,confirm TEO as a larvicidal agent in the treatment of human anisakidosis and in the industrial marinating process.

Modelling Bacterial Dynamics in Food Products: Role of Environmental Noise and Interspecific Competition

In this paper we review some results obtained within the context of the predictive microbiology, which is a specific field of the population dynamics. In particular we discuss three models, which exploit tools of statistical mechanics, for bacterial dynamics in food of animal origin. In the first model, the random fluctuating behaviour, experimentally measured, of the temperature is considered. In the second model stochastic differential equations are introduced to take into account the influence of physical and chemical variables, such as temperature, pH and activity water, subject to deterministic and random variations. The third model, which is an extended version of the second one, neglects the environmental fluctuations, and concentrates on the role of the interspecific bacterial interactions. The comparison between expected results and observed data indicates that the presence of noise sources and interspecific bacterial interactions improves the predictive features of the models analyzed.
