Three-stage pyrolysis–steam reforming–water gas shift processing of household,commercial and industrial waste plastics for hydrogen production

Five common single plastics and nine different household,commercial and industrial waste plastics were processed using a three-stage(i)pyrolysis,(ii)catalytic steam reforming and(iii)water gas shift reaction system to produce *** of plastics produces a range of different hydrocarbon species which are subsequently catalytically steam reformed to produce H_(2)and CO and then undergo water gas shift reaction to produce further H_(2).The process mimics the commercial process for hydrogen production from natural *** of the single polyalkene plastics(high-density polyethylene(HDPE),low-density polyethylene(LDPE),and polypropylene(PP))produced similar H_(2)yields between 115 mmol and 120 mmol per gram *** though PS produced an aromatic product slate from the pyrolysis stage,further stages of reforming and water gas shift reaction produced a gas yield and composition similar to that of the polyalkene plastics(115 mmol H_(2)per gram plastic).PET gave significantly lower H_(2)yield(41 mmol per gram plastic)due to the formation of mainly CO,CO_(2)and organic acids from the pyrolysis stage which were not conducive to further reforming and water gas shift reaction.A mixture of the single plastics typical of that found in municipal solid waste produced a H_(2)yield of 102 mmol per gram *** the gas yields and composition from the single plastics enabled an estimation of the yields from a simulated waste plastic mixture and a‘real-world’waste plastic mixture to be *** different household,commercial and industrial waste plastic mixtures produced H_(2)yields between 70 mmol and 107 mmol per gram *** H_(2)yield and gas composition from the single waste plastics gave an indication of the type of plastics in the mixed waste plastic samples.

Realizing the full potential of ultrahigh-intensity lasers for particle and radiation generation will require multi-beam arrangements due to technology ***,we investigate how to optimize their coupling with solid ***,we show that overlapping two intense lasers in a mirror-like configuration onto a solid with a large preplasma can greatly improve the generation of hot electrons at the target front and ion acceleration at the target *** underlying mechanisms are analyzed through multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations,revealing that the self-induced magnetic fields driven by the two laser beams at the target front are susceptible to reconnection,which is one possible mechanism to boost electron *** addition,the resistive magnetic field generated during the transport of the hot electrons in the target bulk tends to improve their *** simulations also indicate that such effects can be further enhanced by overlapping more than two laser beams.

Efficient and accurate health state estimation is crucial for lithium-ion battery(LIB)performance monitoring and economic *** estimating the health state of LIBs online is the key but is also the most difficult task for energy storage *** high adaptability and applicability advantages,battery health state estimation based on data-driven techniques has attracted extensive attention from researchers around the *** neural network(ANN)-based methods are often used for state estimations of *** one of the ANN methods,the Elman neural network(ENN)model has been improved to estimate the battery state more efficiently and *** this paper,an improved ENN estimation method based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)and cuckoo search(CS)is established as the EIS-CS-ENN model to estimate the health state of ***,the paper conducts a critical review of various ANN models against the EIS-CS-ENN *** demonstrates that the EIS-CS-ENN model outperforms other *** review also proves that,under the same conditions,selecting appropriate health indicators(HIs)according to the mathematical modeling ability and state requirements are the keys in estimating the health state *** the calculation process,several evaluation indicators are adopted to analyze and compare the modeling accuracy with other existing *** the analysis of the evaluation results and the selection of HIs,conclusions and suggestions are put ***,the robustness of the EIS-CS-ENN model for the health state estimation of LIBs is verified.

Sporadic venous malformations are genetic conditions primarily caused by somatic gain-of-function mutation of PIK3CA or TEK,an endothelial transmembrane receptor signaling through *** malformations are associated with pain,bleedings,thrombosis,pulmonary embolism,esthetic deformities and,in severe cases,life-threatening *** authorized medical treatment exists for patients with venous ***,we created a genetic mouse model of PIK3CA-related capillary venous malformations that replicates patient *** showed that these malformations only partially signal through AKT *** compared the efficacy of different drugs,including rapamycin,a mTORC1 inhibitor,miransertib,an AKT inhibitor and alpelisib,a PI3Kαinhibitor at improving the lesions seen in the mouse *** demonstrated the effectiveness of alpelisib in preventing vascular malformations’occurrence,improving the already established ones,and prolonging *** these findings,we were authorized to treat 25 patients with alpelisib,including 7 children displaying PIK3CA(n=16)or TEK(n=9)-related capillary venous malformations resistant to usual therapies including sirolimus,debulking surgical procedures or percutaneous *** assessed the volume of vascular malformations using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)for each *** demonstrated improvement in all 25 *** malformations previously considered intractable were reduced and clinical symptoms were *** showed a decrease of 33.4%and 27.8%in the median volume of PIK3CA and TEK malformations respectively,over 6 months on *** conclusion,this study supports PI3Kαinhibition as a promising therapeutic strategy in patients with PIK3CA or TEK-related capillary venous malformations.

Fluidization behavior of graphitized glassy particles in a fluidized carbon bed cooling process for investment casting

Fluidized Carbon Bed Cooling(FCBC)is an innovative investment casting process for directional solidification of superalloy *** takes advantage of a fluidized bed with a base of small glassy carbon beads for cooling and other low-density particles that form an insulating layer by floating to the bed *** so-called“Dynamic Baffle”protects the fluidized bed from the direct heat input from the high-temperature heating zone and provides the basis for an improved bed *** prerequisites for a stable casting process are stable fluidization conditions where neither collapse of the bed nor particle blow out at excessive bubble formation *** work aimed to investigate the fluidization behavior of spherical carbon bed material in argon and air at temperatures between 20 to 350℃.Systematic studies at reduced pressures using the FCBC prototype device were performed to understand the stable fluidization conditions at all stages of the investment casting *** particle shape factor and size distribution characterization and the measurement of the powder’s minimum fluidization velocity and bed voidage show that this material can be fully utilized as a cooling and buoyancy medium during the FCBC process.

Impact of COVID-19 on Liver Transplant Activity in the USA: Variation by Etiology and Cirrhosis Complications

Background and Aims:The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the care of patients with liver *** examined impact of COVID-19 on liver transplant(LT)activity in the ***:LT listings in the United Network for Organ Sharing(UNOS)database(April 2018–May 2021)were analyzed to examine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the LT activity based on etiology:hepatitis C virus(HCV),alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD),alcoholic hepatitis(AH),and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)complications:hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF)grade 2 or 3 and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease(MELD)*** regression models assessed time trend changes on a log ***:Of 23,871 recipients(8,995 in the COVID era,April 2018–February 2020),mean age 52 years,62% men,61% Caucasian,32%ALD,15%HCC,30%ACLF grades 2–3,and mean MELD score 20.5,monthly LT changes were a decrease of 3.4%for overall LTs and 22%for HCC after September 2020,and increase of 4.5%for ALD since 11/2020 and 17%since 03/2021 for ACLF grade 2–*** MELD scores increased by 0.7 and 0.36 after June 2020 for HCV and HCC ***:The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted LT activity,with a decrease of LTs especially for HCC,and an increase of LTs for ALD and severe *** are needed to reorganize cirrhosis patients to overcome the aftereffects of COVID-19 pandemic.

Is the whole greater than the sum of the parts? Self-rated health and transdisciplinarity

Self-rated health (SRH)—a person’s subjective evaluation of his general health—is a more valid and powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality than any other combination of objective and self-reported measures. However, current theoretical frameworks fail to explain this association. Here, we sought to investigate SRH in relation to health outcomes from a transdisciplinary perspective. Using a selective review of epidemiological, clinical and qualitative SRH literature, we analyzed the relationships between this global subjective self-perception of health (the whole) and its directly measurable constituents (the parts). Although SRH often predicts major health outcomes, its underpinnings vary from person to person. Factors influencing individual’s health interact in complex ways evade reductionist methods assessing the parts, and may be best captured by global self-perceptions of health. The study of SRH from a transdisciplinary perspective exemplifies the notion that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Insight into individual’s experience of “health”, their association with physiological processes, and impact on the health/disease continuum may contribute to the development of individualized strategies for health care and promotion with aging. In particular, this should be most valuable for addressing non-communicable health conditions where cross-talk between health domains (biological, psychological, social, behavioral, spiritual) may significantly contribute to pathophysiology.
