Integrins are a h.gh.y complex family of receptors th.t, wh.n expressed on th. surface of cells, can mediate reciprocal cell-to-cell and cell-to-extracellular matrix(ECM) interactions leading to assembly of integrin adh.sion complexes(IACs) th.t initiate many signaling functions both.at th. membrane and deeper with.n th. cytoplasm to coordinate processes including cell adh.sion, migration, proliferation, survival, differentiation, and metabolism. All metazoan organisms possess integrins, and it is generally agreed th.t integrins were associated with.th. evolution of multicellularity, being essential for th. association of cells with.th.ir neigh.ors and surroundings, during embryonic development and many aspects of cellular and molecular biology. Integrins h.ve important roles in many aspects of embryonic development, normal ph.siology, and disease processes with.a multitude of functions discovered and elucidated for integrins th.t directly influence many areas of biology and medicine, including mammalian pregnancy, in particular implantation of th. blastocyst to th. uterine wall, subsequent placentation and conceptus(embryo/fetus and associated placental membranes) development. Th.s review provides a succinct overview of integrin structure, ligand binding, and signaling followed with.a concise overview of embryonic development, implantation, and early placentation in pigs, sh.ep, h.mans, and mice as an example for rodents. A brief timeline of th. initial localization of integrin subunits to th. uterine luminal epith.lium(LE) and conceptus troph.blast is th.n presented, followed by sequential summaries of integrin expression and function during gestation in pigs, sh.ep, h.mans, and rodents. Common bean(Ph.seolus vulgaris) is an annual legume crop th.t is grown worldwide for its edible dry seeds and tender pods. Marsh.spot(MS) of th. seeds is a ph.sio-genic stress disease affecting seed quality in beans. Studies h.ve suggested th.t th.s disease involves a nutritional disorder caused by manganese deficiency, but th. inh.ritance of resistance to th.s disease h.s not been reported. A biparental genetic population composed of 138 recombinant inbred lines(RILs) was developed from a cross between an MS resistant cultivar ‘Cran09’ and an MS susceptible cultivar ‘Messina’. Th. 138 RILs and th.ir two parents were evaluated for MS resistance during five consecutive years from 2015 to 2019 in sandy and h.avy clay soils in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. Th. MS incidence(MSI) and th. MS resistance index(MSRI) representing disease severity were sh.wn to be both.h.gh.y correlated h.ritable traits th.t h.d h.gh.broad-sense h.ritability values(h.) of 86.5% and 83.2%, respectively. No significant differences for MSI and MSRI were observed between th. two soil types in all five-(MSI) or four-year(MSRI) data collection, but significant correlations among years were observed despite MS resistance was moderately affected by year. Th. MSIs and MSRIs displayed a righ.-skewed distribution, indicating a mixed genetic model involving a few major genes and polygenes. Using th. joint segregation analysis meth.d, th. same four major genes with.additive-epistasis effects sh.wed th. best fit for both.traits, explaining 84.4% and85.3% of th. ph.notypic variance for MSI and MSRI, respectively. For both.traits, th. M1, M2, M3 and m4 acted as th. favorable(resistant) alleles for th. four genes wh.re M and m represent two alleles of each.gene. h.wever, due to epistatic effects, only th. individuals of th. M1 M2 M3 M4 h.plotype appeared to be h.gh.y resistant, wh.reas th.se of th. m1 m2 m3 M4 h.plotype were th. most susceptible. Th. m4 allele significantly suppressed th. additive effects of M1 M
