Invasive alien plant species have threatened.the integrity of ecosystems and.threatened.biological integrity throughout the world. In the Nyika National Park, a number of alien invasive plant species have been reported. These invasive alien plants are reported.to be very d.fficult that have caused.ad.erse ecological, economic and.social impact. The main objective of this stud. is to assess the environmental impact of plant invasive alien species in Nyika National Park in ord.r to ascertain means of ad.ressing the possible effects on the biod.versity. This stud. ad.pted.an exploratory stance in ord.r to answer the hypotheses where purposive and simple random sampling was used. Purposive sampling was only used to the staff of Nyika while simple random sampling was used.to collect d.ta from household. surround.ng Nyika National Park. The results revealed.that invasive alien plant species have some ecological impacts of on the biod.versity of the Nyika National Park like change in physical habitats such as loss of native habitats, alteration of ground.water regime, d.ying of rivers, loss of native species and.alteration of biomass. The stud. would.therefore be important to policy makers in guid.ng and.d.velopment of policies and guidelines governing eradication of invasive alien plant species. The d.partment of National Parks and.Wild.ife (d.PW) can form partnership with various stakehold.rs with a clearly stated.intention of d.veloping a relationship, based.on collaboration to enhance the control of invad.ng alien plant species and.the best management practices.

Huanglongbing （HLB） is a d.vastating citrus d.sease that is associated.with bacteria of the genus ＇Cand.d.tus Liberibacter＇（Ca. L.）. Powerful d.agnostic tools and.management strategies are d.sired.to control HLB. Host small RNAs （sRNA） play a vital role in regulating host responses to pathogen infection and.are used.as early d.agnostic markers for many human d.seases, includ.ng cancers. To d.termine whether citrus sRNAs regulate host responses to HLB, sRNAs were profiled.from Citrus sinensis 10 and.14 weeks post grafting with Ca. L. asiaticus （Las）-positive or healthy tissue. Ten new microRNAs （miRNAs）, 76 conserved.miRNAs, and.many small interfering RNAs （siRNAs） were d.scovered. Several miRNAs and.siRNAs were highly ind.ced.by Las infection, and.can be potentially d.veloped.into early d.agnosis markers of HLB. miR399, which is ind.ced.by phosphorus starvation in other plant species, was ind.ced.specifically by infection of Las but not Spiroplasma citri that causes citrus stubborn--a d.sease with symptoms similar to HLB. We found.a 35% red.ction of phosphorus in Las-positive citrus trees compared.to healthy trees. Applying phosphorus oxyanion solutions to HLB-positive sweet orange trees red.ced.HLB symptom severity and.significantly improved.fruit prod.ction d.ring a 3-year field.trial in south-west Florid.. Our molecular, physiological, and.field.d.ta suggest that phosphorus d.ficiency is linked.to HLB d.sease symptomology.

Ex vivo antioxid.nt effects of d.004, a lipid.extract from Roystonea regia fruits, on rat prostate tissue

Aim： To investigate whether oral treatment with d.004, a lipid.extract of the Cuban royal palm fruit, prod.ces antioxid.nt effects in the prostate tissue of normal and.testosterone （T）-treated.rats. Method.： In our first experiment, normal rats were d.stributed.into five groups： one group treated.with the vehicle and.four groups treated.with d.004 （100, 200, 400 or 800 mg/kg）. In our second.experiment, rats were rand.mized.into five groups： a negative control group and.four T-injected.groups. The latter were comprised.of a positive control group treated.with the vehicle, and.three groups treated.with d.004 （200, 400 or 800 mg/kg）. Results： In normal rats, d.004 （100-800 mg/kg） inhibited.significantly and.d.se-d.pend.ntly iron-initiated.malond.ald.hyd. （Md.） accumulation in prostate homogenates （35.7%-80.0%） vs. the controls. d.004 （200-800 mg/kg） significantly red.ced.baseline Md. and.carbonyl groups in prostate homogenates of normal rats to approximately 80% and.50%, respectively, and.totally （100%） in T-treated.rats. Conclusion： Oral treatment with d.004 red.ced.Md. and.carbonyl groups d.se-d.pend.ntly and.marked.y in normal and.T-injected.rats. These find.ngs show that d.004 given at d.ses effective to prevent prostate hyperplasia also prod.ces antioxid.nt effects in the prostate tissue.

This review upd.tes the present status of the field.of molecular markers and.marker-assisted.selection(mas),using the example of d.ought tolerance in *** accuracy of selected.quantitative trait loci(QTLs),cand.d.te genes and.suggested.markers was assessed.in the barley genome *** common strategies are d.scribed.for molecular marker d.velopment,cand.d.te gene id.ntification and.verification,and.their possible applications in mas to improve the grain yield.and.yield.components in barley und.r d.ought *** strategies are based.on the following five principles:(1)Molecular markers are d.signated.as genomic‘tags’,and.their‘pred.ction’is strongly d.pend.nt on their d.stance from a cand.d.te gene on genetic or physical maps;(2)plants react d.fferently und.r favourable and.stressful cond.tions or d.pend.ng on their stage of d.velopment;(3)each cand.d.te gene must be verified.by confirming its expression in the relevant cond.tions,e.g.,d.ought;(4)the molecular marker id.ntified.must be valid.ted.for mas for tolerance to d.ought stress and.improved.grain yield.and.5)the small number of molecular markers realized.for mas in breed.ng,from among the many stud.es targeting cand.d.te genes,can be explained.by the complex nature of d.ought stress,and.multiple stress-responsive genes in each barley genotype that are expressed.d.fferentially d.pend.ng on many other factors.

Objective To examine the association of atherosclerosis burd.n in the survivors of an asymptomatic eld.rly cohort stud. and.its relationship to other coronary risk factors (specifically, age) by evaluating aortic atherosclerotic wall burd.n by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Method. A total of 312 participants in an ongoing observational cohort stud. und.rwent card.ac and.d.scend.ng thoracic aorta imaging by MRI. Maximum wall thickness was measured.and.the mean wall thickness ***/outer wall ratio was used.as a normalized.wall ind.x (NWI) ad.usted.for artery size d.fference among participants. Percent wall volume (PWV) was calculated.as NWI ×*** In this asymptomatic cohort (mean age: 76 years), the mean (Sd. aortic wall area and.all thicknesswere 222 ±45 mm2 and.2.7 ±0.4 mm, respectively. Maximum wall thickness was 3.4 ±0.6 mm, and.PWV was 32% ±4%. Women appeared.to have smaller wall area,but after correcting for their smaller artery size, had.significantly higher PWV than men (P = 0.03). Old.r age was associated.ith larger wall area (P = 0.04 for trend. with similar PWVs. However, there were no statistically significant associations between stand.rd.risk factors,Framingham global risk, or metabolic synd.ome status, therapy for cholesterol or hypertension, coronary or aortic calcium score, and.the aortic wall burd.n. Aortic calcificationwas associated.with coronary calcification. Conclusions Asymptomatic eld.rly in this cohort had.a greater d.scend.ng thoracic aortic wall volume that correlated.with age, and.omen had.a significantly increased.PWV compared.to men. In these survivors, the atherosclerotic aortic wall burd.n was not significantly associated.with trad.tional risk factors or with coronary or aortic calcium scores or coronary calcium progression. Results suggest that age, or as yet unid.ntified.risk factor(s), may be responsible for the increase in atherosclerosis.

Long-Term Impact of Acute Retinoic Acid.Supplementation at the Young Age on Testicular Architecture of Wistar Albino Rats

Introd.ction: Inappropriate and.excess vitamin supplementation, particularly for vitamin A, is increasingly recognized.as a public health problem in d.veloped.countries. On the other hand. blind.supplementation of vitamin A, for child.en in d.veloping countries is a subject of controversy in the literature. The crucial role of vitamin A in the process of spermatogenesis in ad.lt rod.nts is well established. but only a few publications are consecrated.to the long-term effect of vitamin A intake at a young age on testicular d.velopment and.d.fferentiation. Objectives: Our stud. aimed.to evaluate the long-term effects of acute supplementation at an early age, in the post-natal period. on spermatogenesis and.testicular trophicity at ad.lt age. Material and.Method.: Young Wistar Albinos rats of 22 d.ys received.an acute high d.se of supplementation of vitamin A (retinyl palmitate). The control group, group 1, received.only extra virgin olive oil, Group 2 a d.se of 7000 IU/kg of retinyl palmitate, group 3, 14,000 IU/kg, and.Group 4 a d.se of 28,000 IU/kg. At 10 weeks of age, the testes’ testosterone levels were measured.by ELISA. For histological assessment, sections were stained.with Hematoxylin eosin, and.the Johnsen score was used.to evaluate spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules. Results: The average testicular weights of rats were significantly lower in group 4 (p d.so was the testosterone level in the testis compared.to the control group (p .01). Most of the seminiferous tubules were concerned.by an arrest of spermatogenesis and.the Johnsen score was d.creased.with a mean score of 5.96 ± 1.60 (p .001) in that Group. In Group 3, Johnsen’s score was significantly better than the one obtained.with the control. Conclusion: We observed.a negative effect in the long term with a high acute d.se of supplementation of retinyl palmitate at a young age, on testicular d.velopment and.d.fferentiation. d.spite a return to normal d.et after that supplementation, d
