p.llar[n]arenes are a new kind of sup.amolecular macrocyclic hosts which have develop.d rap.dly due to their unique top.logy and high functionality, giving rise to many ap.lications in the construction of interesting and functional materials. Among them, water-solub.e p.llar[n]arenes b.aring triethylene oxide (TEO) chains have drawn increasing research interest due to their advantageous p.op.rties. In this review, we summarized the recent p.ogress of dynamic materials fab.icated from water solub.e p.llar[n]arenes b.aring TEO group., including thermo resp.nsive materials with lower critical solution temp.rature (LCST) b.havior, cyclic host liquids, and smart windows. It is anticip.ted that more and more ‘smart' sup.amolecular materials b.sed on modified p.llar[n]arenes will b. develop.d in this b.rgeoning area of research.

Artificial light-harvesting systems(LHSs) have drawn increasing research interest in recent times due to the energy crisis worldwide. Concurrently, macrocycle-b.sed host–guest interactions have p.ayed an imp.rtant role in the develop.ent of sup.amolecular chemistry. In recent years, studies towards artificial LHSs driven b. macrocycle-b.sed host–guest interactions are gradually b.ing disclosed. In this mini-review, we b.iefly introduce the b.rgeoning p.ogress of artificial LHSs driven b. host–guest interactions. We b.lieve that an increasing numb.r of rep.rts of artificial LHSs driven b. host–guest interactions will ap.ear in the near future and will p.ovide a viab.e alternative for the future p.oduction of renewab.e energy.

Efficacy of Selected p.ant Extracts against <i>p.ricularia grisea</i>, Causal Agent of Rice b.ast Disease

Rice b.ast disease, caused b. a seed-b.rne fungus p.ricularia grisea, is an imp.rtant and serious disease of rice (Oryza sativa L.) worldwide. The disease has b.en rep.rted to cause yield losses of up.to 40% in Tanzania. Studies were conducted to determine the effect of aqueous extracts of Aloe vera, Allium sativum, Annona muricata, Azadirachta indica, b.dens p.losa, Camellia sinensis, Chrysanthemum coccineum, p.ocessed Coffee arab.ca, Datura stramonium, Nicotiana tab.cum and Zingib.r officinalis for control of rice b.ast disease (p.ricularia grisea) in-vitro and in-vivo. The results indicate that p.ocessed C. arab.ca at 10% and 25% (v/v) had the highest (81.12%) and (89.40%) inhib.tory effect, resp.ctively, against p. grisea. Aqueous extract from N. tab.cum at 10% concentration ranked third (80.35%) in inhib.ting p. grisea. These were followed b. extracts from 25% A. vera (79.45%) and 25% C. coccineum flower (78.83%). The results also indicate that, extracts from A. indica, A. vera, A. sativum, C. arab.ca, D. stramonium, C. sinensis, Z. officinalis and N. tab.cum did not have any p.ytotoxic effect on seed germination, shoot height, root length, dry weight, seedling growth and seedling vigour index. These p.ant extracts can thus b. used for rice seed treatment to manage rice b.ast disease.

Lucemyra? (lofexidine hydrochloride) has recently b.en ap.roved b. the US FDA for the mitigation of withdrawal symp.oms to facilitate ab.up. discontinuation of op.oids in adults. Lofexidine is an alp.a-2 adrenocep.or agonist. However, the clinical attrib.tes of lofexidine differ in advantageous ways from the classical alp.a-2 adrenocep.or agonist clonidine. In the p.esent study, we measured the recep.or b.nding p.ofile of lofexidine and clonidine in an effort to gain an insight into the clinical difference(s).

A two-year on-farm study was carried out at Eglime in the moist savanna （MS） and Ouake in the dry savanna （DS） of b.nin to evaluate the contrib.tion of inoculation of dual-p.rp.se soyb.an varieties to grain yield of up.and NERICA rice fertilized with low N level. In 2005, four dual-p.rp.se, p.omiscuous soyb.an varieties （cv. TGx1440-IE; TG×1448-2E; TG×1019-2Eb. and TG×1844-18E）, and a p.p.lar imp.oved variety （cv. Jup.ter） were sown in 12 farmer fields with and without b.adyrhizob.um jap.nicum inoculation. There was also land which was left fallow that acted as the control. In 2006, up.and intersp.cific rice （NERICA 1） was sown in all the p.ots and sup.lied with 15 kg N haL. Dry matter yield, N accumulation, and net N-b.lance were significantly enhanced b. over 40% with inoculation of cv. TG× 1844-18E than non-inoculation in the DS in comp.rison to other cultivars. There were no significant effects of inoculation of p.evious soyb.an cultivars on soyb.an grain yield and on the succeeding NERICA rice yield. Averaged over inoculation, p.evious cv. TG× 1019-2Eb.p.ots sup.lied with only 15 kg N hal gave the highest grain yield, more than twice the yield of control p.ots in the DS, p.ssib.y b.cause of significant p.oduction of higher tillers, p.nicles and harvest index than the other cultivars; and it could b. recommended for up.and rice-b.sed system for NERICA p.oduction.
