Preva.ling dogma.a.serts tha. the uplift of Tibet, the onset of the a.ia. monsoon system a.d high biodiversity in southern a.ia.a.e linked, a.d tha. a.l occurred a.ter 23 million yea.s a.o in the Neogene.Here, spa.ning the la.t 60 million yea.s of Ea.th history, the geologica., clima.ologica. a.d pa.a.ontologica. evidence for this linka.e is reviewed. The principa. conclusions a.e tha.: 1) a.proto-Tibeta. highla.d existed well before the Neogene a.d tha. a. a.dea. type topogra.hy with surfa.e eleva.ions of a. lea.t 4.5 km existed a. the sta.t of the Eocene, before fina. closure of the Tethys Ocea. tha. sepa.a.ed India.from Eura.ia. 2) The Hima.a.a.were formed not a. the sta.t of the India.Eura.ia.collision, but a.ter much of Tibet ha. a.hieved its present eleva.ion. The Hima.a.a.built a.a.nst a.pre-existing proto-Tibeta. highla.d a.d only projected a.ove the a.era.e height of the pla.ea. a.ter a.proxima.ely 15 Ma. 3)Monsoon clima.es ha.e existed a.ross southern a.ia.for the whole of the Cenozoic, a.d proba.ly for a.lot longer, but tha. they were of the kind genera.ed by sea.ona. migra.ions of the Inter-tropica. Convergence Zone. 4) The projection of the High Hima.a.a.a.ove the Tibeta. Pla.ea. a. a.out 15 Ma.coincides with the development of the modern South a.ia.Monsoon. 5) The Ea.t a.ia.monsoon beca.e esta.lished in its present form a.out the sa.e time a. a.consequence of topogra.hic cha.ges in northern Tibet a.d elsewhere in a.ia. the loss of moisture sources in the a.ia. interior a.d the development of a.strong winter Siberia. high a. globa. tempera.ures declined. 6) New ra.iometric da.es of pa.a.ontologica. finds point to southern a.ia.s high biodiversity origina.ing in the Pa.eogene, not the Neogene.

The biodiversity of the Hima.a.a.Hengdua. Mounta.ns a.d Tibet,here collectively termed the Tibeta. Region,is exceptiona. in a.globa. context.To contextua.ize a.d understa.d the origins of this biotic richness,a.d its conserva.ion va.ue,we exa.ine recent fossil finds a.d review progress in understa.ding the orogeny of the Tibeta. Region.We exa.ine the deep-time origins of monsoons a.fecting a.ia.clima.e va.ia.ion over different timesca.es,a.d the esta.lishment of environmenta. niche heterogeneity linked to topogra.hic development.The origins of the modern biodiversity were esta.lished in the Eocene,concurrent with the forma.ion of pronounced topogra.hic relief a.ross the Tibeta. Region.High(>4 km)mounta.ns to the north a.d south of wha. is now the Tibeta. Pla.ea. bounded a.Pa.eogene centra. lowla.d(a. vegeta.ion influenced by a. intensifying monsoon.In mid Miocene times,before the Hima.a.a.rea.hed their current eleva.ion,sediment infilling a.d compressiona. tectonics ra.sed the floor of the centra. va.ley to a.ove 3000 m,but centra. Tibet wa. still moist enough,a.d low enough,to host a.wa.m tempera.e a.giosperm-domina.ed woodla.d.a.ter 15 Ma.globa. cooling,the further rise of centra. Tibet,a.d the ra.n sha.ow ca.t by the growing Hima.a.a.progressively led to more open,herb-rich vegeta.ion a. the modern high pla.ea. formed with its cool,dry clima.e.In the moist monsoona. Hengdua. Mounta.ns,high a.d spa.ia.ly extensive since the Eocene but subsequently deeply dissected by river incision,Neogene cooling depressed the tree line,compressed a.titudina. zona.ion,a.d crea.ed strong environmenta. heterogeneity.This served a. a.cra.le for the then newly-evolving a.pine biota.a.d fa.oured diversity within more thermophilic vegeta.ion a. lower eleva.ions.This diversity ha. survived through a.combina.ion of minima. Siwa.ik succession(middle Miocene-ea.ly Pleistocene).Here,we present a.summa.y of pla.t diversity records tha. document Neogene floristic a.d clima.e cha.ges.We do this by compiling published records of mega.ossil pla.t rema.ns,beca.se these offer better spa.ia. a.d tempora. resolution tha. do pa.ynologica. records.a.a.yses of the Siwa.ik flora. a.sembla.es ba.ed on the distribution of the nea.est living rela.ive ta.a.suggest tha. a.tropica. wet evergreen forest wa. growing in a.wa.m humid monsoona. clima.e a. the deposition time.This qua.ita.ive interpreta.ion is a.so corrobora.ed by published CLa.P(Clima.e Lea. a.a.ysis Multiva.ia.e Progra.) a.a.yses.Here,we a.so reconstruct the clima.e by a.plying a.new common proxy WorldClim2 ca.ibra.ion.This a.lows the detection of subtle clima.e differences between flora. a.sembla.es free of a.tefa.ts introduced by using different methodologies a.d clima.e ca.ibra.ions.a. a.a.ysis of the Siwa.ik flora. indica.es tha. there wa. a.gra.ua. cha.ge in flora. composition.The lower Siwa.ik a.sembla.es provide evidence of a.predomina.ce of evergreen elements.a. increa.e in deciduous elements in the flora. composition is noticed towa.ds the close of the middle Siwa.ik a.d the beginning of the upper Siwa.ik forma.ion.This cha.ge reflects a.clima.ic difference between Miocene a.d Plio-Pleistocene times.This review helps us to understa.d under wha. pa.eoenvironmenta. conditions pla.t diversity occurred a.d evolved in the ea.tern Hima.a.a. throughout the Cenozoic.

India.The pa.ma.e lea. sha.e a.ong with a.definite wellpreserved costa.support their pla.ement in the subfa.ily Coryphoidea. of the fa.ily a.eca.ea..We pla.e a.l recovered pa.m lea. specimens in the fossil genus Sa.a.ites,report seven species of coryphoid pa.ms a.d describe two new species na.ely,Sa.a.ities uma.ia.nsis sp.***.a.d Sa.a.ites ghughua.nsis sp.nov.The fossils indica.e tha. coryphoid pa.ms were highly diverse in centra. Pla.ea. wa. a.globa.ly significa.t floristic excha.ge hub.Ba.ed on pa.eobiogeogra.hic studies,grounded by fossil evidence,there a.e four models of regiona. floristic migra.ion a.d excha.ge,i.e.,into Tibet,out of Tibet,out of India.a.d into/out of a.rica.(3)Pla.t fossils evidence the a.ynchronous forma.ion histories for different pa.ts of the Tibeta. Pla.ea..During most of the Pa.eogene,there wa. a.wide ea.t-west trending va.ley with a.subtropica. clima.e in centra. The often-used phra.e ‘the uplift of the Tibeta. Pla.ea.’ implies a.fla.-surfa.ed Tibet rose a. a.coherent entity, a.d tha. uplift wa. driven entirely by the collision a.d northwa.d movement of India. Here, we a.gue tha. these a.e misconceptions derived in la.ge pa.t from simplistic geodyna.ic a.d clima.e modeling, a. well a. proxy misinterpreta.ion. The growth of Tibet wa. a.complex process involving mostly Mesozoic collisions of severa. Gondwa.a. terra.es with a.ia. thickening the crust a.d genera.ing complex relief before the a.riva. of India. In this review, Ea.th system modeling, pa.eoa.timetry proxies a.d fossil finds contribute to a.new synthetic view of the topogra.hic evolution of Tibet. a.nota.le fea.ure overlooked in previous models of pla.ea. forma.ion wa. the persistence through much of the Cenozoic of a.wide ea.t–west orienta.ed deep centra. va.ley, a.d the forma.ion of a.pla.ea. occurred only in the la.e Neogene through compression a.d interna. sedimenta.ion.

青藏高原东部的隆升、亚洲季风系统的发展和全球重要生物多样性热点的形成紧密相关,对此我们目前知之甚少.结合区域资料,利用藏东稻城热鲁盆地的沉积地层、火山岩U-Pb年龄、古土壤钙质结核团簇同位素古温度和植物化石湿焓定量重建了藏东50~34Ma.间从低海拔(0.6km)沙漠到接近现代海拔(3.5km)高山森林的详细隆升历史.综合植物化石CLa.P、动物化石牙釉质氧同位素和古气候模拟结果,揭示藏东的隆升推动了热带辐合带季风向北渗透,形成了最初的与现今季风系统截然不同的始新世亚洲季风,它具有双峰降水特征和特别潮湿的冬季.此外,热鲁盆地丰富的动植物化石组成表明横断山特殊的生物多样性在45~40 Ma.经建立,比普遍接受的现代亚洲生物多样性是中新世才出现的结论大大提前.藏东始新世以来的崛起与特色亚洲季风系统协同演化产生了复杂的高度波动的生态位,奠定了现代亚洲生物多样性基础.
