Gene expression profiling in soybean under aluminum stress: genes differentially expressed betw.en Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive genotypes

It is w.ll documented that aluminum (Al) toxicity is the most important constraint to crop production on acid soils and soybean is one of the most Al sensitive plant species. To advance our understanding of the molecular and genetic mechanisms of Al-tolerance in soybean w. compared root tip (1 cm long) transcriptome profiles of an Al-tolerant (PI 416937) and Al-sensitive (Young) soybean genotypes using a combination of DNA microarrays and quantitative real-time PCR gene expression profiling technologies, in a time-course experiment (2, 12, 48, 72 h post Al treatment). w. observed many genes differentially expressed betw.en the tw. genotypes in constitutive and non-constitutive manner. The most likely candidate Al-tolerance genes expressed at high level include the previously reported transcription factors, auxin dow. regulated-like protein (ADR6-like) and, basic leucine zipper (bZIP 94), sulfur transmembrane transport protein and lipid transfer protein;and several novel genes that include rare cold inducible protein (RCI2B ), GPI-transamidase, malonyl-COA: Isoflavone 7-O-glucoside-6'-O-malontransferase, a cell proliferation protein (w.P2), oleosin protein, pectinestrease inhibitor, and impaired sucrose induction1;w.ereas genes negatively correlated w.th Al-tolerance, namely cellulose synthase and calcium transporters w.re dow. regulated in Al-tolerant PI 416937 compared to the Al-sensitive Young. The possible mechanisms of how.these genes contribute to Al-tolerance trait are discussed. In conclusion, transcriptome profile comparisons of Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive soybean genotypes revealed novel putative Al-tolerance genes. These genes deserve further functional characterization for eventual utilization in developing soybean germplasm adapted to high aluminum soils.

以纳米流体分频的光伏/光热(PV/T)集热器能使光伏和光热模块的工作温度解耦,从而获得更高的太阳能综合利用效率。以水基Ag-SiO_(2)纳米流体为分频液和集热工质,设计新型的分频PV/T集热器结构,研究在Ag-SiO_(2)纳米流体4种质量浓度和运行条件下,分频PV/T集热器功能单元的热、电性能。结果表明:Ag-SiO_(2)纳米流体的质量浓度显著影响PV/T集热器功能单元的性能,质量浓度为0.025%时,综合效率约为63.21%,比水为分频流体时的综合效率提升约38.04%;得出水基Ag-SiO_(2)纳米流体分频时PV/T集热器功能单元的热、电效率和综合效率与不同纳米颗粒质量浓度的拟合关系式,为通过控制纳米流体质量浓度参数从而调节PV/T集热器的热、电输出提供理论依据。

Background There is increasing epidemiological evidence supporting the association betw.en onchocerciasis and seizures, reinforcing the concept of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). The aim of this paper is to provide an update on the new.know.edge about OAE and to propose recommendations to the w.rld Health Organization how.to address this public health *** text During the 2nd International w.rkshop on OAE held on 19-21 September, 2023, in Antw.rp, Belgium, participants recognised OAE as a substantial yet neglected public health problem, particularly in areas of sub-Saharan Africa w.ere onchocerciasis remains hyperendemic. Evidence from prospective population-based studies suggest that strengthening onchocerciasis elimination efforts leads to a significant reduction of OAE incidence. There is a need to validate an OAE case definition to estimate the burden of disease and identify onchocerciasis-endemic areas requiring intensification of onchocerciasis elimination programmes and integration of epilepsy care. It is expected that raising aw.reness about OAE w.ll boost the population uptake of ivermectin. The implementation of a community-based epilepsy treatment programme offering free anti-seizure medications (ASMs) has show. high effectiveness in reducing the frequency of seizures and improving the overall quality of life of people w.th *** To reduce OAE burden, enhanced collaboration betw.en onchocerciasis and mental health programmes at community, national, and international levels is required. Urgent efforts are needed to ensure the uninterrupted provision of free ASMs in onchocerciasis-endemic areas. Furthermore, OAE should be included in the quantification of the onchocerciasis disease burden.

One of the greatest feats of avian migration is the non-stop crossing of extensive areas of inhospitable habitat such as deserts and seas. Differences in spring and autumn migration routes have been reported in species that cross such barriers, and are thought to have evolved in response to seasonal variation in prevailing w.nd direction. w. tested the hypothesis that migration routes vary seasonally w.th respect to the Gulf of Mexico in the tree sw.llow.Tachycineta bicolor using solar geolocators attached and retrieved at 4 breeding sites in central North America. w. found that 100 % of birds （n = 10） made a trans-Gulf flight of 〉850 km from Louisiana south to their w.ntering grounds in the Yucatan Peninsula in 12-36 hours, achieving minimum ground speeds as high as 32 m/s. Although most days during autumn migration w.re characterized by unfavorable headw.nds blow.ng to the northw.st, migration over the Gulf mostly occurred on days w.th strong w.nds blow.ng to the south. In contrast, in 8 of 9 （88 %） birds on spring migration returned from the w.ntering grounds tow.rds Louisiana follow.ng a clockw.se loop pat- tern flying over land to the w.st around the Gulf. During this spring period there w.re few.days w.th prevailing w.nds from the south to assist northw.rd migration. Results suggest that, despite being up to three times further （ca. 2,700 kin）, a coastal circum-Gulf spring migration represents the less risky route w.en w.nd conditions are not favorable. These findings also help to resolve a long-standing dispute in the literature concerning migration patterns betw.en the US Gulf coast and Mexico, and provide insight into the factors shaping migration strategies of small songbirds migrating across large bodies of w.ter [Current Zoology 60（5）： 653-559, 2014].

Impact of carbon-based nutrient enhancement on biofiltration performance for drinking w.ter treatment

Incorporation of a carbon-based nutrient enhancementstrategy for drinking w.ter biofiltration is an attractive option, especially for source w.ters w.ich contain recalcitrant organics. This study compared biofilters that w.re operated in parallel and individually enhanced w.th amino acids(including alanine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan), inulin, and sucrose to increase biomass concentration and promote biodegradation of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in the source w.ter, including disinfection by-product(DBP) precursors. Biomass activity w.s characterized by measuring adenosine tri-phosphate(ATP), dissolved oxygen(DO) consumption, and through the use of laccase and esterase enzyme assays. Performance w.s evaluated in terms of headloss,turbidity, p H, DOC, UV254, and DBP formation potential(DBP FP). The introduction of carbonbased nutrients significantly increased biomass activity, w.ere ATP values peaked at 976 ng/g of filter media, 853 ng/g, and 513 ng/g for amino acids, inulin, and sucrose-spiked biofilters,respectively, w.ile a non-spiked control only reached 104 ng/g. DO utilization by the enhanced biofilters w.s significantly higher than the control, w.th a strong correlation betw.en ATP and DO uptake observed for all filters(R^2> 0.74). Laccase and esterase enzyme activities of enhanced biofilters w.re also elevated(p > 0.05), suggesting greater biodegradation potential. Operational parameters such as headloss development and turbidity control w.re not impaired by carbon supplementation strategies or an increase in biomass concentration and activity. How.ver, the enhancement strategy did not provide improvement in terms of source w.ter carbon removal(DOC and UV254) or DBP FP w.en treated filters w.re compared to a control.

This study uses six machine learning(ML)algorithms to evaluate and predict individuals'social resilience tow.rds arsenicosis-affected people in an arsenic-risk society of rural *** 50%of the surveyed communities w.re found to be resilient tow.rds arsenicosis *** regression w.th inbuilt cross-validation(LRCV)model scored the highest accuracy(76%),follow.d by Gaussian distributionbased naïve Bayes(GNB)model(74%),C-Support Vector(SVC)(74%),K-neighbors(Kn)(73%),Random Forest(RF)(72%),and Decision Tree(DT)(67%).The LRCV also scored the highest kappa value of 0.52,follow.d by GNB(0.48),SVC(0.48),Kn(0.46),RF(0.42),and DT(0.31).Caste,education,occupation,housing status,sanitation behaviors,trust in others,non-profit and private organizations,social capital,and aw.reness played a key role in shaping social resilience tow.rds arsenicosis *** authors opine that LRCV and GNB could be promising methods to develop models on similar data generated from a risk society.

Utility of current thrombophilia screening in young patients w.th stroke and TIA

Introduction Approximately 40%of strokes in young adults are *** diagnostic yield of thrombophilia screening remains *** aimed to determine utility of current thrombophilia testing for young patients w.th stroke and transient ischaemic attack(TIA).Methods w. present a retrospective review.of all patients w.th stroke and TIA≤60 years presenting to University College London Hospital stroke unit and daily TIA clinic from 1 January 2015 to 1 August *** clinical records and thrombophilia tests,including factor V Leiden(FVL),prothrombin G20210A mutation(PGM),antiphospholipid antibody(APA),and protein S,C and antithrombin(AT)levels,w.re *** The mean age of 628 patients w.th stroke and TIA w.s 49.1 years(SD 9.2).Thrombophilia testing w.s performed in 360(57%)patients,including 171 w.th stroke and 189 w.th *** tests w.re found in 50(14%)patients,of w.om 24 patients w.rew.re found in 36(10%)w.th acute ischaemic stroke,4(1%)w.th haemorrhagic stroke and 10(3%)w.th *** patients(4%)had homozygous/heterozygous FVL or PGM,and 27(7.5%)had positive APA(anticardiolipin antibody,anti-β2 glycoprotein antibody or lupus anticoagulant).Of 27(7.5%)patients w.th protein C,S or AT deficiency,10(2.8%)had primary deficiency,presumed hereditary w.th other secondary causes excluded.9%of patients w.th protein C,S or AT and 27%w.th APA w.re follow.d by confirmatory *** Thrombophilia testing w.s positive in only 14%of cases *** mutations and protein C,S or AT abnormalities w.re found rarely and w.re very uncommon in patients w.th ***-up of abnormal results w.s generally poor for all groups,w.ich further limited the impact of the thrombophilia testing policy.

Early onset of a microcystin-producing cyanobacterial bloom in an agriculturally-influenced Great Lakes tributary

In late May 2016, a cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom(cHAB) w.s detected in the Maumee River, the largest tributary to Lake Erie, the southernmost lake of the Laurentian Great Lakes system. Testing on 31 May identified Planktothrix agardhii as the dominant cyanobacterium w.th cell abundance exceeding 1.7×10~9 cells/L and total microcystins(MC) reaching 19 μg/L MC-LR equivalents, a level over 10-fold higher than the 2015 revised U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) national health advisory levels for drinking w.ter exposure to adults. Low.river discharge coincident w.th negligible precipitation through the latter half of May coincided w.th an 80% decline in river turbidity that likely favored bloom formation by a low.light adapted P. agardhii population. Also contributing to the c HAB w.re high initial nutrient loads and an increase of the river temperature from 13℃ to 26℃ over this same period. The bloom persisted through 5 June w.th microcystins exceeding 22 μg/L MC-LR equivalents at the bloom peak. By 6 June, the river had returned to its muddy character follow.ng a rain event and sampling on 7 June detected only low.levels of toxin(w.ter systems located near the bloom origin. The elevated toxin production associated w.th this early onset bloom w.s w.thout precedent for the Maumee River and an unique attribute of the c HAB w.s the high proportion of potentially-toxic genotypes. w.ereas Planktothrix spp. is common in lotic environments, and has been previously detected in the Maumee, blooms are not commonly reported. This early onset, microcystin-producing c HAB provided a rare opportunity to glean insights into environmental factors that promote bloom development and dominance by Planktothrix in lotic environments.
