Introduction:Reproductive success is a critical factor affecting avian demographics and can be influenced by many factors including nesting chronology,predation risk,and fine-scale nest site ***:We modeled the relative influences of habitat-related covariates at six spatial scales(nest site:15-,40-,80-,120-,160-,and 200-m radii)on Eastern wild turkey(Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)nest site selection in two pine savannas managed by frequent prescribed fire(≤3 years)in southwestern Georgia during ***:Nest site(15-m scale)habitat metrics(mean visual obstruction[cm]and canopy closure[%])had the greatest influence on nest site selection relative to covariates measured at larger spatial *** odds ratios suggested that nests were 26.8% more likely to occur for every 10 cm increase in mean vegetation height with a range of 7.5 to 150.0 cm and 18.5% less likely to occur for every 10% increase in canopy closure with a range from 0.0 to 97.8%.Total ground cover,canopy closure,edge density,and percent land cover type(e.g.,mature pine,mixed pine/hardwood,shrub/scrub)had minimal influence on nest site ***:Management of pine savannas for turkey nest sites should focus on creating early-successional vegetation to conceal nests from potential ***,we suggest that future studies consider evaluating the influence of spatial scale on turkey nest site selection.

A simple nitrobenzyl-umbelliferone （NCOU1） was synthesised containing a nitroreductase （NTR） trigger moiety. The presence of NTR, resulted in the fragmentation of the parent molecule and release of the highly emissive fluorophore umbelliferone via an NTR-catalyzed reduction of the nitro group. In the presence of the NTR enzyme, NCOU1 gave rise to a 5-fold increase in fluorescence intensity at 455 nm and was selective for NTR over other reductive enzymes. These results indicate that NCOU1 can be used as a simple assay for the detection of NTR.

This research focused on the feasibility and treatment efficiency of Advance Oxidation process(AOp)-UV/TiO2 for three different kinds of simulated dye wastewater(FBL,FBB and S-RL).The first part of this study investigated the treatment of simulated dye wastewater with UV/TiO2 by changing TiO2 dosages,TiO2 particle sizes and dye *** efficiency was measured by color removal and TOC *** optimum conditions obtained for treatment of different dye wastewater were *** treatment of Indanthrene red(FBB) by UV/TiO2 was the best,with 99.68% of TOC removal percentage and nearly 100% of color removal while treatment of FBL with 96.11% of TOC removal and almost 100% of color *** removal efficiency was lowest for S-RL dye solution with 81.88% of TOC and 95.87% for color *** Langmuir adsorption isotherm and modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model(modified L-H model) were fitted to the experimental data and were able to correlate the adsorption patterns and the kinetics of the dyes *** the photocatalysts(TiO2) used were nano-sized powder and is difficult to separate from the wastewater,the second part of this research focuses on the preparation of TiO2-film on glass-substrate and the treatment of simulated FBL dye wastewater by UV/TiO2-film oxidation then *** experimental results showed the TiO2-films are suitable only for the dye wastewater treatment in low concentration.

The cell-biological program termed the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition （EMT） plays an important role in both development and cancer progression. Depending on the contextual signals and intracellular gene circuits of a particular cell, this program can drive fully epithelial cells to enter into a series of phenotypic states arrayed along the epithelial-mesenehymal phenotypic axis. These cell states display distinctive cellular characteristics, including stemness, invasiveness, drug-resistance and the ability to form metastases at distant organs, and thereby contribute to cancer metastasis and relapse. Currently we still lack a coherent overview of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms inducing cells to enter various states along the epithelial-mesenchymal phenotypic spectrum. An improved understanding of the dynamic and plastic nature of the EMT program has the potential to yield novel therapies targeting this cellular program that may aid in the management of high-grade malignancies.

Artificial light-harvesting systems(LHSs) have drawn increasing research interest in recent times due to the energy crisis worldwide. Concurrently, macrocycle-based host–guest interactions have played an important role in the development of supramolecular chemistry. In recent years, studies towards artificial LHSs driven by macrocycle-based host–guest interactions are gradually being disclosed. In this mini-review, we briefly introduce the burgeoning progress of artificial LHSs driven by host–guest interactions. We believe that an increasing number of reports of artificial LHSs driven by host–guest interactions will appear in the near future and will provide a viable alternative for the future production of renewable energy.

Intermediately Complex Models for the Hydrological Interactions in the Atmosphere-Vegetation-Soil System

This paper investigates the hydrological interactions in the atmosphere-evegetation-soil system by using the bucket model and several new simplified intermediately complex models. The results of mathematical analysis and numerical simulations show that these models, despite their simplicity, can very clearly reveal the essential features of the rather complex hydrological system of atmosphere-ecosystem-soil. For given atmospheric variables, these models clearly demonstrate multiple timescales, the ＂red shift＂ of response spectra, multi-equilibria and limit cycles, bifurcation, abrupt change, self-organization, recovery, ＂desertification＂, and chaos. Most of these agree with observations. Especially, the weakening of ＂shading effect＂ of living canopy and the wilted biomass might be a major mechanism leading to the desertification in a relatively short period due to overgrazing, and the desertification in a relatively long period or in climate of change might be due to both Charney＇s mechanism and the shading effect. These ideas could be validated with further numerical simulations. In the paper, some methods for improving the estimation of timescales in the soil water evolution responding to the forcing are also proposed.
