Background： This experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that vitamin e（Vit e） and acetylsalicylic acid（ASA）, a cyclooxygenase-2（COX-2） inhibitor, will additively reduce the production of the immunosuppressive molecule prostaglandin e_2（PGe_2） and hence reduce inflammatory responses in weaner pigs experimentally infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of e. ***： The experiment was conducted in a research facility with 192 individually-housed male weaner pigs（Landrace × Large White） weighing 6.6 ± 0.04 kg（mean ± SeM）. The pigs were experimentally infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of e. coli and were allocated to a 2 × 3 factorial design with the respective factors being without and with 125 ppm ASA and three levels of Vit e supplementation（50, 100 or 200 IU/kg diet, dl-α-tocopheryl acetate）.Results： Acetylsalicylic acid supplementation improved average daily gain（P 〈 0.05） and tended to improve feed：gain ratio（P 〈 0.10） during the first 14 d after weaning. Acetylsalicylic acid supplementation also improved（P 〈 0.001） amino acid utilization efficiency（as assessed by plasma urea level） and tended to decrease（P 〈 0.10） PGe2 production in the liver without affecting smal intestinal histology and tight junction protein mR NA expression in the jejunal epithelium. Vitamin e supplementation greater than 100 IU/kg diet sustained both the plasma Vit e concentration（P 〈 0.001） and plasma haptoglobin content（P 〈 0.001） after weaning. However, there was no additive effects of the combined supplementation of ASA and Vit e on performance, intestinal barrier function and inflammatory responses of weaned ***： Although ASA and vitamin e improved amino acid utilization efficiency and reduced acute inflammatory responses, ASA and vitamin e did not additively reduce production of PGe2 and inflammatory responses in weaner pigs experimental y infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of e. coli.

Systemic RNAi in western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, does not involve transitive pathways

Western corn rootworm （WCR, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte） is highly sensitive to orally delivered double-stranded RNA （dsRNA）. RNAi in WCR is systemic and spreads throughout the insect body. This raises the question whether transitive RNAi is a mechanism that functions in WCR to amplify the RNAi response via production of secondary siRNA. Secondary siRNA production is achieved through RNA-dependent RNA polymerase （RdRP） activity in other eukaryotic organisms, but RdRP has not been identified in WCR and any other insects. This study visualized the spread of the RNAi- mediated knockdown of Dr v-ATPase C mRNA throughout the WCR gut and other tissues using high-sensitivity branched DNA in situ hybridization. Furthermore, we did not detect either secondary siRNA production or transitive RNAi in WCR through siRNA sequence profile analysis. Nucleotide mismatched sequences introduced into either the sense or antisense strand of v-ATPase C dsRNAs were maintained in siRNAs derived from WCR fed with the mismatched dsRNAs in a strand specific manner. The distribution of all siRNAs was restricted to within the original target sequence regions, which may indicate the lack of new dsRNA synthesis leading to production of secondary siRNA. Thus, the systemic spread of RNAi in WCR may be derived from the original dsRNA molecules taken up from the gut lumen. These results indicate that the initial dsRNA dose is important for a lethal systemic RNAi response in WCR and have implications in developing effective dsRNA traits to control WCR and in resistance management to prolong the durability of RNAi trait technology.

Airway management is a skill necessary for healthcare providers who manage patients. Intubation is a skill that both anesthesiologists and intensivists use daily. We present a case of a neonate that developed significant worsening stridor after a successful intubation for a hernia repair. After 4 intubation attempts, with easy visualization of the vocal cords and unsuccessful placement of the endotracheal tube, the patient was emergently brought to the operating room for evaluation.

Supramolecular PS-P4VP diblock copolymer thin films slowly dip-coated from chloroform solutions

This contribution shows the strong influence of using chloroform instead of THF on the characteristics of thin films of supramolecular block copolymers of poly(styrene-b-4-vinyl pyridine) dip-coated in the so-called "capillarity" regime from solutions containing 1-naphthol or 1-naphthoic *** small molecule content in the dip-coated films was investigated by infrared spectroscopy and the film morphology by atomic force *** was found that the small molecule content in the films is constant with dip-coating rate in the range investigated,but it is higher for 1-naphthoic acid than for *** main morphology observed was in the form of "islands" and "holes",which is typical of flat-on *** findings are related to hydrogen-bonding between the small molecule and pyridine being conserved in chloroform and to the good solubility of both blocks in this solvent,with differences between the two small molecules related to their differing H-bond *** findings contrast strongly with what was observed previously using THF as a solvent,for which the SM content increases with dip-coating rate and the morphologies are mainly spherical and cylindrical in the same parameter range.

As part of a collaborative study between the 3rd Institute of Oceanography, Xiamen, and the U-K. Universities of east Anglia and St. Andrews, a 4-day experiment was conducted on a ridge- and -runnel beach of north Norfolk on the North Sea coast- Detailed surveys were made of every low water of an area 10m by 30m and electromagnetic current meters were used to measure wave- induced currents over the ridge and in the runnel- The locations of bedform fields were noted, fluorescent sand was used to follow the sand movement and, at the end of the experiment, lacquer peels were taken of the top 0-2 m of a vertical section through the ridge- and- runnel-During the 4 days 0-75 m3 of sand per metre width of beach accreted in the runnel and a similar volume was eroded from the upper foreshore. The dominant shoreward transport, identified qualitatively by the movement of the fluorescent sand, suggests the ridge- and- runnel system migrated shorewards up the general beach slope of 1 by 2 - 3 m. AIM： To assess the effectiveness of the current UK clinical practice in reducing hepatic fat （IHCL）.MeTHODS： Whole body MRI and IH MRS were obtained, before and after 6 mo nutritional counselling, from liver, soleus and tibialis muscles in 10 subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD）.ReSULTS： A 500 Kcal-restricted diet resulted in an average weight loss of 4% （-3.4 kg,） accompanied by significant reductions in most adipose tissue （AT） depots, including subcutaneous （-9.9%）, abdominal subcutaneous （-10.2%） and intra-abdominal- AT （-11.4%）. Intramyocellular lipids （IMCL） were significantly reduced in the tibialis muscle （-28.2%）. Decreases in both IHCL （-39.9%） and soleus IMCL （-12.2%） content were also observed, although these were not significant. Several individuals showed dramatic decreases in IHCL, while others paradoxically showed increases in IHCL content. Changes in body composition were accompanied by improvements in certain liver function tests： serum aspartate aminotransferase （AST） and alanine aminotransferase （ALT）. Significant correlations were found between decreases in IHCL and reductions in both intra-abdominal and abdominal subcutaneous AT. Improvements in liver function tests were associated with reductions in intra-abdominal AT, but not with changes in IHCL. CONCLUSION： This study shows that even a very modest reduction in body weight achieved through lifestyle modification can result in changes in body fat depots and improvements in LeTs.

Production, Application, and Field Performance of Abietiv^(TM),the Balsam Fir Sawfly Nucleopolyhedrovirus

Beginning in the early 1990s, the balsam fir sawfly (Neodiprion abietis) became a significant defoliating insect of precommercially thinned balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands in western Newfoundland, Canada. In 1997, a nucleopolyhedrovirus (NeabNPV) was isolated from the balsam fir sawfly and, as no control measures were then available, NeabNPV was developed for the biological control of balsam fir sawfly. In order to register NeabNPV for operational use under the Canadian Pest Control Products Act, research was carried out in a number of areas including NeabNPV field efficacy, non-target organism toxicology, balsam fir sawfly ecology and impact on balsam fir trees, and NeabNPV genome sequencing and analysis. As part of the field efficacy trials, approximately 22 500 hectares of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest were aerially treated with NeabNPV between 2000 and 2005. NeabNPV was found to be safe, efficacious, and economical for the suppression of balsam fir sawfly outbreak populations. Conditional registration for the NeabNPV-based product, Abietiv?, was received from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (Health Canada) in April 2006. In July 2006, Abietiv was applied by spray airplanes to 15 000 ha of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest in western Newfoundland in an operational control program.
