Targeted principle component analysis:A new motion artifact correction approach for near-infrared spectroscopy

As near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)broadens its application area to diferent age and diseasegroups,motion artifacts in the NIRS signal due to subject movement is becoming an *** artifacts generally produce signal fiuctuations that are larger than physio-logical NIRS signals,thus it is cruciai to corect for them before obtaining an cstimate ofstimulusevoked hemodynamic responses.,There are various methods for correction such as principlecomponent analy sis(P cA),wavelet-based filt ering and spline int ***,we introduce anew approach to motion artifact correction,targeted principle component analysis(PcA),which incorporates a PcA filter only on the segments of data identified as motion *** expected that this will overcome the issues of filtering desired signals that plagues standardPcA fitering of entire data *** compared the new approach with the most efiective motionartifact correction algorithms on a set of data acquired simultaneously with a collodion-fixedprobe(low motion artifact content)and a standard Velcro probe(high motion artifact content).Our results show that tPcA gives statistically better results in recovering hemodynamic responsefunction(HRF)as compared to wavelet-based fltering and spline interpolation for the *** resulis in a significant reduction in mean-squauared'error(MSE)and significant en-hancement in Pearson's correlation coeficient to the true HRF,The collodion-fixed fiber probewith no motion correction performed better than the Velcro probe corrected for motion artifactsin terms of MSE and Pearson's correlation ***,if the experimental study permits,the use of a collodion-fixed fiber probe may be desirable.I the use of a collodion-fixed probe is notfeasible,then we suggest the use of tP cA in the processing of motion artifact contaminated data.

Effect of O-4-ethoxyl-butyl-berbamine in combination with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin on advanced hepatoma in mice

AIM: To study the synergistic effects of calmodulin (cAM) antagonist O-4-ethoxyl-butyl-berbamine (EBB) and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) on hepatoma-22 (H22) in vivo. METHODS: Hepatoma model was established in 50 Balb/c mice by inoculating H22 cells (2.5×10^6) subcutaneously into the right backs of the mice. These mice were divided into 5 groups, and treated with saline only, PLD only, doxorubicin (Dox) only, PLD plus EBB and Dox plus EBB, respectively. In the treatment groups, mice were given 5 intravenous of PLD or Dox on days 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12. The first dosage of PLD or Dox was 4.5 mg/kg, the other 4 injections was 1 mg/kg. EBB (5 mg/kg) was coadministered with PLD or Dox in the corresponding groups. The effect of drugs on the life spans of hepatoma-bearing mice and tumor response to the drugs were recorded. Dox levels in the hepatoma cells were measured by a fluorescence assay. Light microscopy was performed to determine the histopathological changes in the major organs of these tumor-bearing mice. The MTT method was used to analyze the effect of Dox or PLD alone, Dox in combination with EBB, or PLD in combination with EBB on the growth of H22 cells in an in vitro experiment. RESULTS: EBB (5 mg/kg) significantly augmented the antitumor activity of Dox or PLD, remarkably prolonged the median survival time. The median survival time was 18.2 d for control group, but 89.2 d for PLD+EBB group and 70.1 d for Dox+EBB group, respectively. However, Dox alone did not show any remarkable antitumor activity, and the median survival time was just 29.7 d. Addition of EBB to Dox or PLD significantly increased the level of Dox in H22 cells in vivo. Moreover, EBB diminished liver toxicity of Dox and PLD. In vitro, EBB reduced the Ic50 value of Dox or PLD on H22cells from 0.050±0.006 mg/L and 0.054±0.004 mg/L to 0.012±0.002 mg/L and 0.013±0.002 mg/L, respectively (PcONcLUSION: EBB and liposomization could improve the therapeutic efficacy of Dox in liver cancer, w

Spinal cord injury(ScI)can permanently impair motor and sensory function and has a devastating cost to patients and the United States healthcare *** cell transplantation for treatment of ScI is a new technique aimed at creating biological functional *** techniques in stem cell transplantation for ScI are *** review various clinical treatment paradigms,surgical techniques and technical considerations important in ScI *** NcBI PubMed database was queried for“ScI”and“stem cell”with a filter placed for“clinical trials”.Thirty-nine articles resulted from the search and 29 were included and evaluated by study authors.A total of 10 articles were excluded(9 not ScI focused or transplantation focused,1 canine model).Key considerations for stem cell transplantation include method of delivery(intravenous,intrathecal,intramedullary,or excision and engraftment),time course of treatment,number of treatments and time from injury until *** are no phase III clinical trials yet,but decreased time from injury to treatment and a greater number of stem cell injections both seem to increase the chance of functional recovery.

Machine perfusion in abdominal organ transplantation: current use in the Netherlands

Modelling the daily risk of Ebola in the presence and absence of a potential vaccine

BAcKGROUND There is limited literature on managing the airway of patients with linear immunoglobulin A(IgA)bullous dermatosis,a rare mucocutaneous disorder that leads to the development of friable *** clinical decision making is necessary when there is a risk of bleeding into the airway,and a multidisciplinary team approach may lead to decreased patient morbidity during these high-risk scenarios,especially when confronted with an unusual cause for *** SUMMARY A 45-year-old African American female presented to our ambulatory surgical center for right corneal transplantation due to corneal perforation after blunt trauma in the setting of cicatricial conjunctivitis and diffuse corneal neovascularization from linear IgA bullous *** diagnosis of IgA dermatosis was recent,and the patient had been lost to *** severity of the disease and extent of airway involvement was unknown at the time of the *** airway bleeding was noticed upon intubation and the otorhinolaryngology team had to be called to the operating *** patient required transfer to the intensive care unit where a multidisciplinary team was involved in her *** patient was extubated on postoperative day *** A multidisciplinary approach to treating this disease is the best course of action before a surgical *** our case,key communication between the surgery,anesthesia,and dermatology teams led to the quick and safe treatment of our patient’s *** surgery should not be considered for these cases unless they are in full remission and there is no mucous membrane involvement.
