Soybean seed protein, oil, fatty acids, and m.neral com.osition as influenced by soybean-corn rotation

Effects of crop rotation on soybean (Glycine m.x (L) m.rr.) seed com.osition have not been well investigated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of soybean-corn (Zea m.ys L.) rotations on seed protein, oil, and fatty acids com.osition on soybean. Soybeans were grown at Stoneville, m., from.2005 to 2008 in five different scheduled cropping sequences. In 2007, following three years of rotation with corn, seed oleic acid percentage was significantly higher in any crop rotation than continuous soybean. The increase of oleic fatty acid ranged from.61 to 68% in 2007, and from.27 to 51% in 2008, depending on the rotation. The increase of oleic acid was accom.anied by significant increases in seed concentrations of phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and boron (B). In 2007, the increase of P ranged from.60 to 75%, Fe from.70 to 72%, and B from.34 to 69%. In 2008, the increase of P ranged from.82 to 106%, Fe from.32 to 84%, and B from.62 to 77%. Continuous soybean had higher linoleic:oleic ratio and linoleic: palm.tic + stearic + oleic ratio, indicating that relative quantity of linoleic acid decreased in rotated crops. The total production of protein, oil, stearic and oleic fatty acids was the lowest in continuous soybean. The total production of palm.tic acid was inconsistent across years. The results show that soybean- corn rotation affects seed com.osition by consistently increasing seed oleic fatty acid, P, Fe, and B concentrations. Higher oleic acid, unsaturated fatty acid, is desirable for oil stability and long-shelf storage. The m.chanism. of how these nutrients are involved are not yet understood.

Winter flooding of harvested rice fields attracts m.gratory waterfowl and m.y assist in degrading rice straw residue. Field studies were conducted between 2003 and 2005 in Stoneville, m. to evaluate the im.acts of winter flooding of harvested rice fields on rice straw degradation, winter weeds, soybean yield, and soil biochem.cal and chem.cal properties. The experim.ntal area each year consisted of a harvested rice field that rem.ined no-till after harvest and that was dissected into 7.6- by 15-m.bays with constructed levees to accom.odate winter flooding treatm.nts. Flooding treatm.nts (10-cm.depth) consisted of: 1) flooded from.m.d-October to early m.rch;2) flooded m.d-October to early January;3) flooded m.d-Decem.er to early m.rch;4) flooded m.d-Decem.er to m.d-January;and 5) no flood. Winter weeds were counted, biom.ss determ.ned as well as residual rice straw before flooding and in early April of each year. Winter flooding reduced rice straw biom.ss 32% to 60% com.ared to 21% to 31% reduction for no winter flood with the longest flood duration resulting in the greatest loss of carbon and nitrogen from.straw residues in both years. Winter flooding treatm.nts reduced weed populations and weed biom.ss from.43% to 99% when com.ared to no flooding treatm.nt. Soybean yields ranged from.3295 ***-1 with the longest winter flooding regim. to 4295 ***-1 with no flooding. Significant reductions in soil nitrate levels were m.st consistent in the upper 0 to 2.5-cm.surface soil. Soil enzym.tic activity (dehydrogenase and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis) was increased by flooding in 2003, while m.nim.l effects were found in the second year consistent with m.re anaerobic conditions attained in 2003 com.ared to 2004. Environm.ntal benefits of accelerated straw decom.osition and weed control is achieved by winter flooding;however, there are negative consequences of nitrogen losses and reduced soybean yield.

To the editor:In the USA alone,there were 1.7 m.llion suicide attem.ts in 2021.1 Although the m.jority of suicide attem.ts are not fatal,im.ediate m.dical attention is often necessary,especially when violent m.thods are used.2 These m.thods include jum.ing from.heights,using a firearm.crashing a m.tor vehicle,and lying down or jum.ing in front of a m.ving object.
