Antioxidant potential,tannin and polyphenol contents of seed and pericarp of three Coffea species

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant activity,total phenolic and total tannin content of the pericarp and the seed of Coffea benghalensis(***) and Coffea liberica compared to Coffea arabica(***).Methods:The antioxidant potential,total tannin and polyphenol contents of the immature and mature seed and pericarp of *** and Coffea liberica were quantified and compared to *** chemiluminescence(ECL).2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydruzyl(DPPH).oxygen radical absorbance capacity,Folin-Ciocaltcau method and total tannin content assays were ***:Trolox equivalent(TE/g plant material) values obtained by ECL and DPPH methods showed loose correlation(r^2=0.587)while those measured by oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay were higher without correlation in each plant.A closer correlation was detected between the ECL method and the percentage antioxidant activity of the DPPH technique(r^2=0.610 7) in each species,however the immature pericarp of *** showed much higher DPPH scavenging potential than was seen in the ECL *** immature pericarp of *** expressed the highest tannin and polyphenol content,and a high polyphenol level was also detected in the immature seed of *** immature pericarp of Bengal and Liberian coffees showed the largest amount of phenolic ***:The obtained data highlight the potential role of *** as a new source of natural antioxidants and polyphenols compared to ***.

With increasing age,humans become more susceptible to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases(NDs),and among these,Alzheimer's disease(AD)is the most frequent(Nicoletti et al.,2023).NDs are primarily characterized by neuronal loss and atrophy,but also by lesions involving the cerebral and/or cardiovascular system(Balistreri,2021).Lesions such as macroinfa rcts,microinfarcts,hemorrhages,white matter lesions,atherosclerosis,and arteriolosclerosis have also been significantly described in the preclinical stages of cognitive impairment characterizing NDs(Mariani et al.,2007).

Cells,tissues,and organs are constantly subjected to the action of mechanical forces from the extracellular environment-and the nervous system is no ***-intrinsic properties such as membrane lipid composition,abundance of mechanosensors,and cytoskeletal dynamics make cells more or less likely to sense these *** and extrinsic cues are integrated by cells and this combined information determines the rate and dynamics of membrane protrusion growth or retraction(Yamada and Sixt,2019).Cell protrusions are extensions of the plasma membrane that play crucial roles in diverse contexts such as cell migration and neuronal synapse *** the nervous system,neurons are highly dynamic cells that can change the size and number of their pre-and postsynaptic elements(called synaptic boutons and dendritic spines,respectively),in response to changes in the levels of synaptic activity through a process called *** plasticity is a hallmark of the nervous system and is present throughout our lives,being required for functions like memory formation or the learning of new motor skills(Minegishi et al.,2023;Pillai and Franze,2024).

This editorial is a commentary on the case report by Furuya et al focusing on the challenging diagnosis of early pancreatic adenocarcinoma and new tools for an earlier ***,pancreatic cancer still has a poor prognosis,mainly due to late diagnosis in an advanced *** main precancerous routes have been identified as pathways to pancreatic adenocarcinoma:The first encompasses a large group of mucinous cystic lesions:intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm and mucinous cystic neoplasm,and the second is pancreatic intraepithelial *** the last decade the focus of research has been to identify high-risk patients,using advanced imaging techniques(magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography or endoscopic ultrasonography)which could be helpful in finding“indirect signs”of early stage pancreatic ***,the survival rate still remains poor,and alternative screening methods are under *** retrograde cholangiopancreatography followed by serial pancreatic juice aspiration cytology could be a promising tool for identifying precursor lesions such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm,but confirming data are still needed to validate its *** a combination of cross-sectional imaging,endoscopic techniques(old and new ones)and genetic and biological biomarkers also in pancreatic juice)could be the best solution to reach an early *** could help to predict and follow the progression of early pancreatic ***,further studies are needed to validate their diagnostic reliability and to establish diagnostic algorithms to improve prognosis and survival in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Insular mammalian fauna dynamics and paleogeography:A lesson from the Western Mediterranean islands

Since the time of Darwin(1859)and Wallace(1869),islands have been regarded by scientists as a prime target for scrutinizing the forces that may influence evolution and diversification and important elements in biogeographic *** research aims to scrutinize whether and to what extent the composition and structure of past mammal insular faunas and their changes through time may provide sound clues for inferring the paleogeographical evolution of a *** a case study,I critically analyzed the dynamics shown by the Plio-Pleistocene mammalian fauna of 3 Western Mediterranean insular districts,the Balearic Islands,Sardinia and Sicily,each characterized by its own peculiar paleobiogeographical evolutionary *** revision of faunas and the critical analysis of the dispersal ability of the ancestors of island settlers have allowed hypothesizing on the time and mode of island *** results obtained confirm that the early isolation of the Balearic Islands from the mainland led to the establishment of an endemic fauna since the pre-Messinian Miocene(?Astaracian European Land Mammal Age,MN7/8),and that Sardinia has definitely been isolated since the Pliocene,although dispersal events led to some faunal turnovers during the *** addition,the results suggest for Sicily a complex,still imperfectly disentangled history of alternate phases of complete separation and sporadic,more or less difficult connections with southern Italy.

New few parameters differential evolution algorithm with application to structural identification

Differential evolution algorithm(DEA) is a stochastic, population-based global optimization method. In this paper, we propose new schemes for both mutation and crossover operators in order to enhance the performances of the standard DEA. The advantage of these proposed operators is that they are "parameters-less", without a tuning phase of algorithm parameters that is often a disadvantage of DEA. Once the modified differential evolutions are presented, a large comparative analysis is performed with the aim to assess both correctness and efficiency of the proposed operators. Advantages of proposed DEA are used in an important task of modern structural engineering that is mechanical identification under external dynamic loads. This is because of the importance of using a "parametersless" algorithm in identification problems whose characteristics typically vary strongly case by case, needing of a continuous set up of the algorithm proposed. This important advantage of proposed optimizers, in front of other identification algorithms, is used to develop a computer code suitable for the automatic identification of a simple supported beam subject to an impact load, that has been tested both using numerical simulations and real standard tests dynamic. The results point out that this algorithm is an interesting candidate for standard applications in structural identification problems.

Synthesis and Characterization of Rare Earth Ion Doped Nano ZnO

Zinc oxide(ZnO) doped with erbium at different concentrations was synthesized by solid-state reaction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopic(SEM), UVabsorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence(PL) study and vibrating sample magnetometer. The XRD studies exhibit the presence of wurtzite crystal structure similar to the parent compound ZnO in 1% Er^(3+)doped Zn O,suggesting that doped Er^(3+)ions sit at the regular Zn^(2+)sites. However, same studies spread over the samples with Er^(3+)content>1% reveals the occurrence of secondary phase. SEM images of 1% Er^(3+)doped ZnO show the polycrystalline nature of the synthesized sample. UV-visible absorption spectrum of Er^(3+)doped ZnO nanocrystals shows a strong absorption peak at 388 nm due to ZnO band to band transition. The PL study exhibits emission in the visible region, due to excitonic as well as defect related transitions. The magnetizationfield curve of Er^(3+)doped ZnO nanocrystals showed ferromagnetic property at room-temperature.

Young blood products:emerging treatment for Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer＇s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and no disease-modifying treatment is currently *** has shown that while brain neurogenesis continues in adult life,it declines with *** parabiosis,plasma transfusions and direct administration of neural growth factors,animal studies have demonstrated the positive impact of exposure to young blood products on neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity in an aging *** hippocampus and the sub-ventricular zones were identified as the main regions *** findings have prompted researchers to experiment their effects in subjects with an established neurocognitive disorder,such as Alzheimer＇s *** argued that modification of brain vasculature,reactivation of adult neural stem cells,and remodeling of their synaptic activity/plasticity may lead to cognitive enhancement and increased *** pilot human study found that young donor plasma infusion protocols for adults with Alzheimer＇s disease were safe and feasible;however,no statistically significant improvements in cognition were *** is a need to conduct additional placebo-controlled human studies in larger *** studies should focus on identifying an “optimal age” at which an intervention in humans may yield significant cognitive enhancement,as well as determining the types of transfusions with the best efficacy and tolerability profiles.

The intriguing giant deer from the Bate cave (Crete): could paleohistological evidence question its taxonomy and nomenclature?

The research describes for the first time a possible case of pituitary gigantism in fossil mammals,precisely in *** pathology was detected in 2 long bones(tibia and metatarsus)belonging to an individual of an unusual large size found at the Bate cave(Rethymnon,Northern Crete).It formed the basis of Candiacervus major,the largest among the endemic deer species recorded in the Pleistocene-Early Holocene of *** and histomorphological examinations highlighted a reduction in cortical bone thickness and the presence of wide lacunae inside of the bone *** pathological conditions suggest a pituitary gigantism diagnosis also supported by some morphological evidence,such as the extremely elongated distal part of the metatarsal diaphysis,the proportionally small proximal epiphysis,and some bone *** diagnosis of a case of pituitary gigantism as presumed responsible for the extraordinary elongation of the tibia and the metatarsal bone is intriguing as they are,respectively,the paratype and the holotype of the *** species represents a case of a deviation from the“island rule”in Pleistocene large *** new evidence recommends a taxonomic and nomenclatural revision of this *** main outcomes of this research are as follows:(i)a case of pituitary gigantism is described for the first time in an extinct mammal;(ii)it is underlined that paleohistology may provide interesting clues for disentangling taxonomic and nomenclatural issues;(iii)one of the very few cases of gigantism in insular mammals is being questioned.
