Essential oil of <i>Thymus vulgaris</i>L. and <i>Rosmarinus officinalis</i>L.: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, cytotoxicity and antioxidant properties and antibacterial activities against foodborne pathogens

The essential oil composition of Thymus vulgaris L. and Rosmarinus officinalis L. endemic to France were determined by GC and GC-MS. Oils were assessed for their cytotoxic, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. 31 and 37 different compounds were identified representing 99.64% and 99.38% of the thyme and rosemary oils respectively, where oxygenated monoterpenes constituted the main chemical class. Thymol (41.33%) and 1.8-cineole (24.10%) were identified as the main constituents of T. vulgaris L. and R. officinalis L., respectively. Essential oils (EOs) of selected plant species were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against the human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cell line (A549). Cytotoxicity was measured using MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphynyltetra-zolium bromide] colorimetric assay. Dose-dependent studies revealed IC50 of 8.50 ± 0.01 μg/mL and 10.50 ± 0.01 μg/mL after 72 h on the A549 cells for R. officinalis L. and T. vulgaris L., respectively. Antioxidant activity was determined using a quantitative DPPH (1,1-diphenyl- 2-picryl hydrazyl) assay. Thymus and rosemary EOs exhibited effective radical scavenging capacity with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 437 ± 5.46 μg/mL and 189 ± 2.38 μg/mL respectively and therefore acts as a natural antioxidant agent. The antimicrobial activity of these species has also been studied against several foodborne pathogens and food isolated Salmonella spp. including S. enteritidis of significant importance. According to the results, T. vulgaris L. showed higher bactericidal effect than those from R. officinalis L. These results suggest that the essential oil from T. vulgaris L. and R. officinalis L. have potential to be used as a natural cytotoxic, antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in food processing.

Valorization of harbor dredged sediment activated with blast furnace slag in road layers

The valorization solutions for dredged sediment have been the subject of a great number of investigations over the previous *** the current present study,treatment of polluted dredged sediment for the commercial port of Sfax,Tunisia,is *** industrial byproduct(blast furnace slag) was used to bind raw sediment for a reuse in road *** standards of this field,the raw sediment first was identified and classified according to the French technical *** an environmental assessment was applied due to the presence of heavy *** concentrations were measured on the raw sediment particles so as to control the binding effect on heavy *** mixtures consisted of a mix of sand and a blast furnace slag activated with *** mixtures were tested and some were proposed for sub-layer *** Sfax commercial port raw sediment is considered as a sandy loam with a very low fraction of *** measured concentrations of heavy metals exceed the recommended thresholds for cadmium,copper,lead,and *** can induce hazardous effects in the case of their dumping into the *** the other hand,the concentrations of the detected elements after leaching tests run on raw sediment samples are very low compared to the thresholds;such results highlight a possible recycling of the raw sediment in subgrade layers without any negative *** formulations were deduced for road engineering tests relying on the ratio the California Bearing Ratio index and the immediate bearing *** the obtained ratio exceeds one,the treated sediment can be recycled and used in road layers.

Managerial Overconfidence and Debt Decisions

The application of behavioural theory to corporate finance is now attracting the attention of theoretical work. However, very little rigorous empirical work has been carried out to analyse the desirability of behavioural biases in relation to financing decisions. The main results argue that managerial overconfidence provides an alternative determinant of capital structure. However, many questions remain to be explored, related to overconfidence measures and positive/negative effects of managerial overconfidence. Our paper assumes that the combination of financial theory and behavioural theory leads to better explanatory power. We follow two complementary goals. Firstly, we examine the dynamic trade-off model introducing a behavioural perspective. Secondly, we propose extending the pecking order analysis to incorporate overconfidence in Shyam-Sunder and Myers＇s model. We use a sample of Tunisian firms and employ panel-data estimation procedures to account for endogeneity and spurious correlation issues. Our results confirm the assumption that manager confidence is positively related to debt level. Overconfident managers underestimate the probability of financial distress and will choose higher levels of debt than they would if they were ＂rational＂.

Dual Anthropogenic Origin of Global Warming through GHGs and IR Radiation Emissions from Artificialized Soils

This paper contributes to explain the global warming instead of"giving up"and thinking about passively adapting to climate change or global *** makes more sense to tackle what creates the greenhouse effect and contributes to global *** greenhouse effect is not only due to GHGs emissions,but also to the excess IR radiation emitted during the day,by artificial surfaces,following the absorption of solar *** phenomenon should be compared to that of radiative forcing well known by climatologists and which makes the link between atmospheric pollution and the density of heat fluxes stopped by the atmosphere inducing global *** becomes clear that type an equation *** surplus CO2 and IR radiation emissions influence global warming,not to mention the direct part of the heat released by the combustion of fossil fuels and even renewable(wood fires,biogas,friction of wind turbine propellers with the air).

Refrigerator Coupling to a Water-Heater and Heating Floor to Save Energy and to Reduce Carbon Emissions

With an aim of rationing use of energy, energy safety, and to reduce carbon emission, our interest was geared towards the refrigerators and all the refrigerating machines. Indeed the heat yielded by the exchanger condenser can be developed for the water heating, floors heating etc. After an encouraging theoretical study, two prototypes were produced in order to validate the theoretical results. A first refrigerator was coupled with a water-heater and another with a heating floor. The water temperature reached, in one day, is of 60℃;which makes it possible to predict better results with a continuously used refrigerator. In the same way for the heating floor coupled with the second refrigerator, the temperature reached high values because the surface is reduced;however for the heating floors the standard fixes the temperature between 28℃ and 30℃.

Introduction:Necrotising otitis externa(NOE)is a rare infection of the ear canal with frequent bone *** study’s objective is to describe the different features of NOE as well as its management in an ear-nose-throat *** also tried to identify the particularities of the fungal *** and methods:It is an observational cohort that included all the patients hospitalised for the management of *** study was carried out in the ear-nose-throat Department of Mahdia University Hospital in Tunisia between January 2006 and december ***:A total of 40 patients were *** mean age was 65±12.9 years and the sex ratio was *** percent of the patients included were *** most common signs found were oedema of the external canal(97.5%)and auricular discharge(92.5%).The main pathogen isolated was Pseudomonas aeruginosa(61.7%).Fungi were isolated in 9 cases(26.47%).Computed tomography was performed for 32 patients(80%).Bone erosion was seen in 26 cases(81.3%).The main complications were cerebral venous thrombosis,retropharyngeal abscess and cerebral *** one patients received only antibiotics,2 received only antifungal treatment,and 7 received both antibiotics and antifungal *** patients had a favorable *** analysis showed a higher median erythrocyte sedimentation rate was associated with fungal *** other differences were ***:Our management protocol seems to be efficient since all patients had initial favorable outcome.A higher median erythrocyte sedimentation rate was associated with fungal infections.

Hydrogen Production by Water Electrolysis Effects of the Electrodes Materials Nature on the Solar Water Electrolysis Performances

Our contribution in the production of hydrogen, vector of energy, consists in testing the water electrolysis by photovoltaic solar energy. The realization of some electrolysers whose electrodes are various materials, showed a clear difference from the point of view produced hydrogen flow, conversion efficiency, energy specific consumption and the electrodes lifespan. This made it possible to classify materials, by performances descending order, as follows: copper, lead, bronzes, aluminum, stainless, graphite and steel. However lead has a too low flow and aluminum corrodes quickly. Steel admits poor yield and lifespan. Then, we retain primarily copper like anode metal. To increase the hydrogen produced flow by electrolysis, the electrolysers parallel assembly choice is essential. According to the hour of the day, the evolution of the parameters such as consumed current, efficiency, and specific energy differs from a material with another, which can be explained by the variation of solar energy during the day.

Experimentation of a Plane Solar Integrated Collector Storage Water Heater

In order to popularize the use of the solar-water heaters, especially in the residential and tertiary sectors with the third world, it appears to be necessary to reduce their cost while improving their performances. It is the object of this integrated storage collector thus created and tested in the south of Tunisia. It is simply made up of a tank playing the double part of solar absorber and storage tank of warm water, of a glazing to profit from the greenhouse effect and of an insulating case. Its measured energy performances, by the method of input-output proves its effectiveness to produce hot water, in spite of its simplicity of manufacture, usage and maintenance. Indeed a temperature of water exceeding 70?C is reached towards the afternoon True Solar Time, and for an efficiency of 7%. Thus, this type of collector with integrated storage is entirely satisfactory and could be available to larger mass.

Production of Hydrogen by Electrolysis of Water: Effects of the Electrolyte Type on the Electrolysis Performances

The production of hydrogen, vector of energy, by electrolysis way and by using photovoltaic solar energy can be optimized by suitable choice of electrolytes. Distilled water, usually used, due to membrane presence may be substituted by wastewaters, which enters more in their treatment. Waste water such as those of the Cleansing National Office, and also of the factories such as those referring with ammonia, the margines, and even urines that make it possible to produce much more hydrogen as distilled or salted water, more especially as they do not even require an additive or membranes: conventional electrolysers with two electrodes. This study seeks to optimize the choice among waste water and this, by electrolysis in laboratory or over the sun according to produced hydrogen flow criteria, electrolysis efficiency and electric power consumption. The additive used is NaCl. The most significant results are on the one hand the significant increase in the produced hydrogen flow by the addition of the additive;on the other hand the advantage of gas liquor and urine compared to the others tested electrolytes.

Global Warming and Its Multiple Causes

The global warming which preoccupies humanity,is still considered to be linked to a single cause which is the emission of greenhouse gases,CO2 in *** this article,we try to show that,on the one hand,the greenhouse effect(the radiative imprisonment to use the scientific term)took place in conjunction with the infrared radiation emitted by the *** surplus of CO2 due to the combustion of fossil fuels,but also the surplus of infrared emissions from artificialized soils contribute together or each separately,to the imbalance of the natural greenhouse effect and the trend of global *** addition,another actor acting directly and instantaneously on the warming of the ambient air is the heat released by fossil fuels estimated at 17415.1010 kWh/year inducing a rise in temperature of 0.122°C,or 12.2°C/century.
