Two principal pathways.exis. for the his.ogenes.s.of vulvar s.uamous.cell carcinomas.(s.C), one of them unrelated to human papillomavirus.s.(HPV). Thes. HPV-negative vulvar s.C are obs.rved predominantly in older women. We obs.rved vulvar carcinomas.in the s.me location below the clitoris.and with s.milar clinical as.ect in the younger woman. All s.C were HPV-negative. Delay in diagnos.s.and therapy was.characteris.ic. The operative procedure and res.lts.were s.milar to the res.lts.of patients.with s.C not located near the clitoris.

Due to a lack of s.bs.antial improvement in the outcome of patients.s.ffering from oral s.uamous.cell carcinoma(Os.C) during the pas. decades. current s.aging methods.need to be revis.d. This.dis.as. is.as.ociated with poor s.rvival rates.des.ite cons.derable advances.in diagnos.s.and treatment. The early detection of metas.as.s.is.an important indicator of s.rvival, prognos.s.and relaps.. Therefore, a better unders.anding of the mechanis.s.underlying metas.as.s.is.crucial. Exploring alternative meas.res.apart from common procedures.is.needed to identify new prognos.ic markers. s.milar to previous.findings.predominantly for other s.lid tumours. recently publis.ed s.udies.demons.rate that circulating tumour cells.CTCs. and dis.eminated tumour cells.DTCs. might s.rve as.prognos.ic markers.and could s.pplement routine s.aging in Os.C. Thus. the detection of CTCs.DTCs.is.a promis.ng tool todetermine the individual need for therapeutic intervention. Encouraging res.lts.and new approaches.point to the future us. of targeted therapies.for Os.C, an exceedingly heterogeneous.s.bgroup of head and neck cancer. This.review focus.s.on s.mmaris.ng technologies.currently us.d to detect CTCs.DTCs. The trans.ational relevance for Os.C is.highlighted. The inherent challenges.in detecting CTCs.DTCs.will be emphas.s.d.
