Factors Affecting Japanese HPV-Vaccination: Findings from the Semi-Structured Interviews with Adolescent Girls and Caregivers

The objective of the present study was to qualitatively assess the obstructive and facilitative factors affecting adolescent girls and their caregivers when the adolescent had received or was considering receiving the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination. Using these data, we propose recommendations for medical and nursing staff concerned with HPV vaccination. Participants were 20 adolescent girls (aged 10 - 19 years) and their caregivers, who had visited any of the 3 pediatric clinics in the Tokyo metropolitan area during a specified period since HPV vaccination began in Japan. The girls and their caregivers were separately interviewed by 2 child and/or family nursing care specialists with a semi-structured interview. The responses were qualitatively analyzed by 2 specialists, and the obstructive and facilitative factors affecting participants’ decision to receive HPV vaccination were extracted from the responses. Among the 20 sets of participants, 7 adolescents had completed HPV vaccination, 9 were going to receive vaccination, and 4 had not received any vaccination. The obstructive/facilitative factors related to considering or receiving HPV vaccination and actual vaccination were extracted and 4 main categories of factors were identified. Facilitators toward HPV-vaccination of daughters included clear future self-image and visions, fear Cervical Cancer (CC) and desire to escape from CC, having discussion with mothers about HPV-vaccination and CC, and to have a boyfriend. Barriers toward vaccination included the mothers’ reluctance to explain the sexual matters about HPV-vaccination to their daughters and difficulty with find the appropriate clinic or hospital to HPV-vaccination. Relevant factors about vaccination included positive family attitudes toward vaccination, having family system allowing consultation and having a public financial support for vaccination for daughters. Background: “Children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities” refers to children with markedly limited activity due to severe overlapping of physical and intellectual disabilities. The physical and mental burden placed on families raising severely disabled children, particularly the primary caregivers, is great in home settings. For families to effectively utilize services and over-come child rearing problems, the families themselves need the “strength” to cooperate with others for the purpose of raising a severely disabled child. The ultimate goal of family support is to enable such families to achieve satisfaction and self-growth in child rearing. Methods: We used a questionnaire to survey 75 primary caregivers to empirically elucidate the empowerment and positive feelings towards child rearing of families raising children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities and the related factors. The t-test and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to examine the association with bivariates. A multiple regression analysis was conducted for empowerment and positive feelings. Results: Results revealed that life events, livelihood, awareness of social support and the child’s sleep problems were factors related to empowerment. Of these, awareness of social support from outside of the family was found to contribute the most to empowerment. Furthermore, improvement and maintenance of positive feelings towards child rearing reaffirmed the existence of empowerment in addition to reducing negative feelings towards child rearing and ensuring social support. Conclusions: Raising children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities requires specialist knowledge and skills. Support from professionals to empower the entire family is therefore important in order to strengthen positive feelings towards child rearing.

Postmenopausal Bleeding and Changing Bleeding Patterns after Parental Use of Corticosteroids: A Prospective Cohort Study

Objective: To study whether there is a relation between the application of corticosteroids and occurrence of postmenopausal bleeding. Also we want to determine whether corticosteroids can cause an irregularity in a previously regular menstruation cycle. Design and Setting: Prospective cohort study in the department of anesthesiology. Patients: 209 women who received a single dosage of corticosteroids as treatment for pain. Interventions: None, observational cohort study;all women received standard care. Main outcome measures: Postmenopausal blood loss or disruption of menstruation cycle. Result: Postmenopausal blood loss or disruption of menstruation cycle were both more common 6 weeks after administration of corticosteroids, but were sometimes also reported 2 weeks after administration of corticosteroids. Conclusion: After administration of corticosteroids in a postmenopausal woman an episode of menstruation like bleeding can be expected. This is probably due to a transient drop of androstenedione. In premenopausal women a transient change in menstruation cycle can be observed.

The utility of a next generation biosynthetic bacterial 6-phytase(PhyG)in restoring bone ash,bone phosphorus(P)content and performance in piglets depleted in P was evaluated.A total of 9 treatments were tested as *** 1,a negative control(NC)diet;treatments 2,3,4,NC supplemented with 250,500 or 1,000 FTU/kg of PhyG;treatments 5,6,NC supplemented with 500 or 1,000 FTU/kg of a commercial Buttiauxella sp phytase(PhyB);treatments 7,8,9,NC supplemented with monocalcium phosphate(MCP)to provide 0.7,1.4 and 1.8 g/kg digestible P,equating to a digestible P content of 1.8,2.5 and 2.9 g/*** latter constituting the positive control(PC)diet with adequate P and calcium(Ca).The NC was formulated without inorganic P(1.1 g digestible P/kg)and reduced in Ca(5.0 g/kg).Additional limestone was added to treatments 7 to 9 to maintain Ca-to-P ratio between 1.2 and 1.3.A total of 162 crossed Pietrain x(Large White×Landrace)21-d-old piglets(50%males and 50%females)were fed adaptation diets until 42 d old and then assigned to pens with 2 pigs/pen and 9 pens/treatment in a completely randomized block *** were fed mash diets based on corn and soybean meal ad libitum for 28 *** the end of the study,one piglet perpen was euthanized and the right feet collected for determination of bone strength,bone ash and mineral *** with the PC,the NC group had reduced average daily gain(ADG)and increased feed conversion ratio(FCR)during all growth phases and overall,and at d 28(70 d old)NC pigs had bones with reduced ash,Ca and P content(P500 FTU/kg,both PhyG and PhyB maintained ADG and FCR equivalent to *** regression analysis was done to compare the measured response parameters to increasing digestible P from *** on this analysis it was shown that PhyG and PhyB at 1,000 FTU/kg could replace 1,83 and 1.66 g/kg dige

Melanin is a biopolymer implicated in the protection of cellular membranes and DNA produced by melanocytes. This pigment has a dual role and should be considered as a photo-protector and as a photosensitizer due to its interaction with UV. The design of multifunctional and biologically responsive coatings is of major interest in modern biomaterials science. The aim of this study is not only to characterize the deposition of multilayered polyelectrolytes films made from polydopamine particles and polyamines like poly-(L-lysine hydrobromide) (PLL), but also to evaluate melanoma cells activity in terms of proliferation and their capacity to stimulate melanin secretion. One could expect that the presence of a melanin like material in the film may have a positive or a negative feedback on the melanin biosynthesis and consequently on melanoma development. Some comparisons are also done with pure polydopamine grains in suspension in the cell culture medium, to investigate if the immobilization of the polydopamine grains has an influence on their bioactivity.

Mutation screening of muscle development genes in patients with idiopathic clubfoot

Background: Congenital idiopathic clubfoot is a very common musculoskeletal birth defect, but with no known etiology. Dietz et al. have shown possible linkage in chromosome 3 and 13 in a large, multigenerational family with congenital idiopathic clubfoot. Current evidence suggests that muscle development is impaired in patients with congenital idiopathic club-foot, therefore we hypothesized that mutations in genes related to muscle development could be associated with this deformity. From the areas identified in the linkage study, candidate genes SPRY2, RAF1, IQSEC1, LMO7, and UCHL3 were selected based upon their presence in skeletal muscle as well as their involvement in muscle development. Methods: The exons and splice sites of the five genes were screened via sequence-based analysis in a group of 24 patients with congenital idiopathic clubfoot. All single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found were compared to public databases to determine allelic frequency and amino acid modification. Results: While many SNPs were found, none proved to be significantly associated with the phenotype of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. The SNPs found were shown to be common amongst a non-clubfoot population and to follow the allelic frequency of the general population. Conclusions: Based upon these results, SPRY2, RAF1, IQSEC1, LMO7, and UCHL3 are not likely to be the major causes of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. Given the complexity of myogenesis, many other candidate genes remain that could cause defects in the hypaxial musculature that is invariably observed in congenital idiopathic club-foot. Clinical Relevance: This study further identifies genes which are unlikely to be the direct cause of congenital idiopathic clubfoot. It also helps to eliminate suspected genes found within the given bounds of chromosome 3 and 13.

Energy Values of Registered Corn Forage Hybrids in France over the Last 20 Years Rose in a Context of Maintained Yield Increase

The cultivation of corn silage has developed in France since the 1970s to reach 1.5 million of hectares nowadays. Since 1998, a feeding value criterion (namely UFL for “Unité Fourrage Laitière”) has been taken into account to register forage varieties in the French forage maize hybrids catalog in addition to other criteria related to plant agronomical performances such as yield, earliness and lodging resistance. It is frequently stated that the improvement of plant’s agronomic performances would led to a decline in forage energy value. Decline of “Unité Fourrage Laitière” values has been repeatedly reported and the expected increase was not yet visible in 2002. In the present study, a set 47 early and mid-early hybrids commercialized in France between 1958 and 2015 has been cultivated in 3 locations in France. “Unité Fourrage Laitière” values and yield have been estimated in order to shed light on the evolution of feeding value criteria during this period and to conclude on the evolution of “Unité Fourrage Laitière” values since the introduction of this criterion for registration. Results obtained in our study demonstrated a recent rise in “Unité Fourrage Laitière” value in a context of strong yield increase. This increase was not necessarily attributable to high cob proportion in the harvested silage. Breeder’s work since the 2000’s has succeeded to offer hybrids that recover “Unité Fourrage Laitière” values similar to the ones of hybrids from the 1960’s (Royal, 1960, 91 UFL/100 kg DM). We propose to accentuate this effort targeting the enhancement of lignocellulosic cell wall digestibility to breed for future forage maize hybrids.
