Introduction: Mandibular fractures in children are becoming increasingly common. Treatment of these fractures is difficult due to their anatomical and physiological complexity. Therefore, there is a need for well-codified management. Our main aim was to develop a decision algorithm for the management of mandibular fractures in children based on our experience. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study carried out in the Department of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of Cocody over a period of 20 years (2000-2019). Results: We enrolled 58 patients. The mean age of the patients was 9.35 ± 2.3 years with a sex ratio of 2.22. Traffic accidents were the main cause of mandibular fractures (60.35%). Condylar fractures were the most common (46.87%). Treatment was orthopedic in 45.76% of cases, mixed (orthopedic and surgical) in 24.14% and surgical in 5.17%. Patients were followed up weekly for 1 month, then monthly for 6 months and annually for 3 years, with panoramic radiographs of the maxilla starting at 21 days. We observed 2 cases of complications: temporomandibular ankylosis and gingival stomatitis. Conclusion: Mandibular fractures are common in children. Management is difficult due to anatomical and physiological peculiarities. The choice of treatment depends on several criteria.

In order to prepare a specific melanocortin type 2 receptor (MC2R) ligand, β1-24-corticotrophin was prepared in one-step reaction with [18F] SFB and β-1-24-corticotrophin pharmaceutical solution (1 mg/mL, pH=6.5). [18F]SFB was prepared in a semi-automated module in two steps with an overall radiochemical yield of 47% to EOB (not-decay corrected) in 90 min. The 18F-labeled intermediates and 18F-labeled peptide was checked by RTLC and HPLC. The results show that the radiochemical purity is >95% and the yield to EOB (not-decay corrected) is 29% for final 18F-labeled peptide at optimized conditions. Preliminary in vivo studies in normal mice were performed to determine biodistribution of the 18F-labeled peptide for 150 min. The results show that the major tracer uptake is consistent with the natural distribution of MC2R receptors in mammals. Testes/blood and testes/muscle ratios for 18F-labeled peptide at 150 min were 184 and 1.56, respectively, and adipocyte/blood and adipocyte/muscle ratios at 120 min were 221 and 142, respectively. The data support the specific receptor binding of the radiolabeled peptide as reported for MC2R receptor accumulation in adipocytes and testes and demonstrates the retention of biological activity of the peptide. This tracer can be used in detection of MC2R distribution in malignancies and sex organ diseases.

Repeated blood transfusions in thalassemia patients is followed by endo-crinopathies as diabetes,hypothyroidism,hypogonadism,hypoparathy-roidism,and disorders in calcium and vitamin D *** aim of this study was to evaluate the association of beta-thalassemia patients endocrinopathies and *** level of some factors related to the function of gonads,thyroid,adrenal,and pancreas along with serum levels of calcium,phosphate,albumin,vitamin D,and iron were *** marrow density was tested via dualenergy x-ray absorptiometry(DXA densitometry).In this study,56 patients with major thalassemia were *** analysis indicated osteopenia in 17(30.4%)and osteoporosis in 39 patients(69.6%)in addition to other types of endocrine disorders,such as hypogonadism in 29(51.8%),hypothyroidism in 13(23.2%),hypoparathyroidism in 1(1.8%),hypocortisolism in 2(3.6%),and diabetes in 9(16.1%)*** had no signifi cant relationship with osteoporosis and osteopenia in ***,hypogonadism had a significant relationship with osteoporosis and osteopenia in women with *** level was lower in women with osteoporosis in comparison with women with *** levels had neither association with osteoporosis nor with LH levels(P>0.05).Secondary hypogonadism disorders are the main causes of osteoporosis and osteopenia in female beta-thalassemia patients.

Segmentation of Sinusoids in Hematoxylin and Eosin Stained Liver Specimens Using an Orientation-Selective Filter

The liver comprises cell layers of hepatocytes called trabeculae, which are separated by vascular sinusoids. Under- standing the structure of hepatic trabeculae and liver sinusoids in hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained liver specimens is important for the differential diagnosis of liver diseases. In this study, we develop an approach to extracting liver sinusoids from HE-stained images. The proposed approach involves: 1) a new orientation-selective filter (OS filter) for edge enhancement and image denoising, 2) the clustering of image pixels to identify candidate sinusoids, and 3) a classification procedure that discards unlikely candidates and selects the final sinusoid areas. Experimental studies using a database of 16 images with a resolution of 512 × 512 pixels showed that the proposed approach could segment liver sinusoid pixels with 81% of specificity and 94% of sensitivity. A comparison with a method based on bilateral filters showed that this method improved the sensitivity for all images with an average improvement of 4% and no difference in specificity. The results were presented to a group of pathologists and they confirmed that the images were highly representative of the tissue morphology features.

Objective: A comparative analysis on transmission of Helicobacter pylori in people who consumed food prepared in both hygienic and unhygienic conditions. Method: The study was carried out in 1000 people across India. The Ratio of Male: female was 700: 300 with age group ranging from 20 - 39. Three gastric biopsies were collected for identification of Helicobacter pylori. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) amplification was done by using 16srRNA primers. Result: The analysis showed the prevalence of H. pylori as 70.8% in individuals frequently consuming food prepared under less hygienic condition (street vendor’s food) whereas 60% (less prevalence) in individuals consuming food prepared under hygienic conditions. Conclusion: The results showed that most of the food that we consume daily is not involved much in the transmission of Helicobacter pylori. The study also showed that the street vendor’s food is not directly involved in the transmission of this bacterium. The unhygienic preparation of food and poor personal hygiene play a vital role in the transmission of these bacteria.

Introduction: The importance of H. pylori as an etiological agent in gastroduodenal disease had suggested antibiotic treatment as a main target for the elimination of infection. The successful eradication of H. pylori infection was shown to resolve the gastritis, dramatically accelerate ulcer healing, reduce ulcer recurrence and the prophylactic effect on the recurrence of ulcer bleeding. Materials and Methods: In the present study a total six antimicrobial agents such as Ciprofloxacin, Metronidazole, Norfloxacin, Tetracyclin, Amoxycillin and Clarithromycin were used against 100 clinical isolates from patients with peptic ulcer, and non-ulcer dyspepsia. H. pylori was isolated from the gastric biopsies obtained from the clinical subjects. Results: Results of our study showed 100% resistance to Metronidazole (MIC > 256 μg/ml). 97% of the isolates were observed sensitive to Ciprofloxacin (MIC 0.38 μg), whereas Tetracyclin showed 96% sensitivity (MIC 0.25 μg - 0.125 μg). Resistance to amoxycillin, Norfloxacin, and Clarithromycin were 80%, 38% and 76% respectively (MIC > 256 μg/ml). Conclusion: It is observed that 96% - 97% of the clinical isolates were sensitive to Tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, where all isolates were found to be resistant to Metronidazole. Resistance to Amoxycillin and Clarithromycin were 80% and 76% respectively. Studies attributed the high level of resistance to the frequent use of the drugs to treat various other infections and ineffective drug control policy.

Introduction: H. pylori is a primary pathogen isolated by Warren and Marshall in 1983. They called it as Campylobacter Pylori and in 1989 Goodwin et al. renamed it as Helicobacter pylori. Helicobacter pylorus is one of the responsible factors for causing gastritis, Peptic ulcer disease and is strongly associated with gastric carcinoma and gastric Malt lymphoma. Materials and Methods: In this study 300 biopsies were collected at Deccan College of Medical Sciences and Allied Hospitals, Hyderabad, India. Of these, 101 patients had peptic ulcer, 95 patients had gastritis and 4 had gastric carcinoma. A total of four gastric biopsy specimens were collected. One was used for culturing H. pylori, one for histological lesions and the remaining two one each from the antrum & corpus was collected in phosphate buffered saline for the DNA analysis. Results: Helicobacter pylori were isolated from many of the biopsies and the identification of Helicobacter pylori was confirmed in 200 biopsies with colony characteristics, Biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA amplification. The presence of VacA marker was detected by using appropriate primers. From the data obtained in our study, in a total of 169/200 isolates s1 region was found in 84.1% and s2 was found in 36/200 i.e. 18% of the isolates. In the middle region, m1awas found in 60/200 which was 30%, m1b was found in 60/200 i.e. 60% and m2 was found in 114/200 i.e. 57.1% of the isolates. Conclusion: Thus, VacA detection might be helpful for determination of which patients are at highest risk for severe clinical outcomes such as duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer or gastric carcinoma and eventually, to define strategies for the treatment or prevention of H. pylori infection.
