Assessment of the Contribution of Road Runoffs to Surface Water Pollution in the New Juaben Municipality, Ghana

Road runoffs were sampled from five highways and five urban roads located in the New Juaben Municipality during the late storm events in the month of November 2014 and the early storm events in January 2015. A variety of water quality parameters such as, pH, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), aqueous concentrations of Chloride (Cl-), Phosphate (), Nitrate () and Sulphate () ions as well as the total concentrations of some selected heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr) were analysed for both periods. Although the results for the studied parameters, particularly the heavy metals varied for both sampling periods, the general trend indicated an increase in accumulation from November 2014 to January 2015. This was attributed to vehicular deposition as well as other natural and anthropogenic depositions on the road surfaces during the antecedent dry weather period between the two sampling months. The highest increase in pollutant loadings was associated with the heavy metals and some physico-chemical parameters such as TSS, TDS, EC and turbidity. Generally, EC, TDS, TSS and turbidity were above the permissible limits of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Ghana for both sampling periods. However, almost all the mean concentrations of heavy metals recorded for both road runoffs and the control samples were within the permissible limits of the Ghana EPA with some few exceptions.

The Etobicoke Exfiltration System（EES）,named after the first installation in Etobicoke（now part of the City of Toronto） in 1991,consist of installation of two perforated pipes installed in a storm sewer trench bedding material that are wrapped in filter cloth and plugged at their downstream *** system allows the distribution of collected stormwater runoff along sewer system（using perforated pipes）and its storage（in the bedding material） and exfiltration into the surrounding *** was devised as a Best Management Practice（BMP） aimed at managing the peak flow,volume,quality,duration and frequency of stormwater discharges to receiving water bodies,and proved to be a cost efficient and robust option through more than 20 years of service with minimal *** objective of this paper is to describe the current research on modelling tools for estimation of long term performance of EES and physical experiments of EES hydraulic *** design of the original EES installation was based on relatively simple calculations,in which the aim was to capture and exfiltrate runoff from a 15 mm rainfall ***,computer modelling of EES was incorporated in MIDDUS software package,which allowed the response of the system to be simulated for a design storm *** first objective of current research was to investigate approaches for continuous modelling of EES using USEPA SWMM for the purpose of estimating average long-term *** approaches were investigated in which the EES was modelled in SWMM using different combinations of available model elements:nodes,links,orifices and *** most sensible approach models exfiltration into the surrounding soil using a pump to represent the stage-exfiltration relationship,and a combination of orifices and a storage node to represent the perforated pipe connections and voids in the bedding material,respectively.A calibrated model of a 10.45 ha residential sewershed in the Town of richmond Hill,Canad
