Development of a new algorithm for implementing the edge effect offset for subsidence calculations

The surface deformation prediction system(SDPS) program has been developed as an engineering tool for the calculation of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of various prediction *** basic user-defined input parameters, SDPS can determine subsidence indices, such as mining induced displacements, strains, tilt, etc., at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography.A fundamental parameter in obtaining reliable ground deformation results is the determination of the edge effect *** value assigned to the edge effect offset corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined-out *** objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset algorithm within *** proven geometric equations, the newly developed algorithm provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary of the extracted panel for simplistic as well as more complex mining *** that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel with respect to the user defined edge effect offset *** deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel *** Matlab program was utilized for development and testing of the new edge effect offset *** completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset algorithm will be integrated into SDPS further increasing the speed and reliability of the program resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility.

‘‘Web ground control"(web GC) provides users with instantaneous access to mine design applications anywhere, at any time, through a web *** a web-based multiple-tier architecture, users are able to easily access ground control designs, perform on-demand calculations in the field, as well as facilitate project collaborations across multiple users, devices, and operating ***, the web GC platform contains five ground control related design applications previously developed and distributed by the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH), that is, analysis of roof bolt stability(ARBS), analysis of longwall pillar stability(ALPS), analysis of retreat mining stability(ARMPS), analysis of retreat mining stability–highwall mining(ARMPS-HWM), and analysis of horizontal stress in mining(AHSM).With respect to design decisions made by the web GC development team, the web GC platform will be able to further integrate future mine design applications providing the mining industry with one of a kind umbrella suite of ground control related software available at ones *** following paper provides a detailed overview on the current state of the web GC platform with discussions ranging from back-end database development and design to the front-end user-platform *** on current progress in platform development as well as beta testing results, the web GC platform is scheduled for release in the fall of 2018.

Ground movements due to longwall mining operations have the potential to damage the hydrological balance within as well as outside the mine permit area in the form of increased surface ponding and changes to hydrogeological properties. Recently, the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement(OSMRE) in the USA, has completed a public comment period on a newly proposed rule for the protection of streams and groundwater from adverse impacts of surface and underground mining operations(80 FR 44435). With increased community and regulatory focus on mining operations and their potential to adversely affect streams and groundwater, now there is a greater need for better prediction of the possible effects mining has on both surface and subsurface bodies of water. With mining induced stress and strain within the overburden correlated to changes in the hydrogeological properties of rock and soil, this paper investigates the evaluation of the hydrogeological system within the vicinity of an underground mining operation based on strain values calculated through a surface deformation prediction model. Through accurate modeling of the pre- and post-mining hydrogeological system, industry personnel can better depict mining induced effects on surface and subsurface bodies of water aiding in the optimization of underground extraction sequences while maintaining the integrity of water resources.

Background:Skeletal muscle energetics decline with age,and physical activity(PA)has been shown to offset these declines in older ***,many studies reporting these effects were based on self-reported PA or structured exercise ***,we examined the associations of accelerometry-measured and self-reported PA and sedentary behavior(SB)with skeletal muscle energetics and explored the extent to which PA and sedentary behavior would attenuate the associations of age with muscle ***:As part of the Study of Muscle,Mobility and Aging,enrolled older adults(n=879),810(age=76.4±5.0 years old,mean±SD;58%women)had maximal muscle oxidative capacity measured ex vivo via high-resolution re spirometry of permeabilized myofibers(maximal oxidative phosphorylation(maxOXPHOS))and in vivo by ^(31)phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy(maximal adenosine triphosphate(ATP_(max))).Accelerometry-measured sedentary behavior,light activity,and moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA)were assessed using a wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X over 7 ***-reported sedentary behavior,MVPA,and all PA were assessed with the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors(CHAMPS)*** regression models with progressive covariate adjustments evaluated the associations of sedentary behavior and PA with muscle energetics,as well as the attenuation of the age/muscle energetics association by MVP A and sedentary *** a sensitivity analysis,we also examined activPAL-measured daily step count and time spent in sedentary behavior and their associations with muscle ***:Every 30 min/day more of ActiGraph-measured MVPA was associated with 0.65 pmol/(s×mg)higher maxOXPHOS and 0.012 mM/s higher ATP_(max)after adjusting for age,site/technician,and sex(p<0.05).Light activity was not associated with maxOXPHOS or ATP_(max).Meanwhile,every 30 min/day spent in ActiGraph-measured sedentary behavior was associated with 0.39 pmol/s×mg lower maxOXPHOS and0.

Curious eroded depressions,most resembling an eye shedding an elongate tear,are found in gently sloping,intertidal,carbonate-rich arenite outcropping on the sea coast near Lakes Entrance,Victoria,southeast *** depressions,known locally as“Tears of the Virgin,”are evidently formed by multiple generations of a barnacle,Chthamalus antennatus Darwin,1854 in association with *** the round part of a depression offers the barnacle a modicum of protection from impacts during high tides,it is also partially inhabited by cyanobacteria,which extend into and tend to fill the elongate *** such,this appears to be the first case of mutualism between a higher invertebrate and cyanobacteria,with the cyanobacteria reducing the barnacle’s risk of desiccation while receiving metabolic wastes from it during low *** is also the first record of a balanomorph barnacle eroding calcareous arenite beneath its shell,the net effect of which would be expected to reduce its adhesion to the ***,the siliceous residue,resulting from the barnacle’s dissolution of the more than 80%of the calcite-rich sedimentary rock,is sequestered in delicate folds on the inside of the shell wall as it grows.A brief review of cirripedes capable of excavation includes the first photographic documentation of excavation of a mollusc shell by a verrucomorph.

Habitat suitability models have been used to predict the present and future potential distribution of a variety of spe- cies. Eurasian tree sparrows Passer montanus, native to Eurasia, have established populations in other parts of the world. In North America, their current distribution is limited to a relatively small region around its original introduction to St. Louis, Missouri. We combined data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility with current and future climate data to create habitat suitability models using Maxent for this species. Under projected climate change scenarios, our models show that the distribution and range of the Eurasian tree sparrow could increase as far as the Pacific Northwest and Newfoundland. This is potentially important in-formation for prioritizing the management and control of this non-native species [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 648--654, 2011].

The fossil history of turtle and whale barnacles(Coronuloidea:Chelonibiidae,Platylepadidae,Coronulidae and†Emersoniidae)is fragmentary and has only been investigated in *** inferences and molecular phylogenetic analyses on extant specimens suggest that the roots of whale barnacles(Coronulidae)are to be found among the chelonibiid turtle barnacles,but the hard-part modifications that enabled early coronuloids to attach to the cetacean skin are still largely to be ***,we reappraise a fossil chelonibiid specimen from the Miocene of insular Tanzania that was previously referred to the living species Chelonibia *** largely forgotten specimen is here described as the holotype of the new species†Chelonibia *** similar to ***,†*** exhibits obvious external longitudinal parietal canals occurring in-between external longitudinal parietal septa that abut outwards to form T-shaped flanges,a character so far regarded as proper of the seemingly more derived Coronulidae and *** with these features,the presence of a substrate imprint on the shell exterior indicates that†*** grasped its host’s integument in much the same way as coronulids and platylepadids,albeit without the development of macroscopic parietal buttresses and *** section analyses of the inner parietal architecture of some extant and extinct coronuloids conclusively demonstrate that vestiges of comparable external parietal microstructures are present in some living members of *** observation strengthens the unity of Coronuloidea while significantly contributing to our understanding of the evolution of the coronuloid shell structure in adapting to a diverse spectrum of hosts.

Our next generation of industry-lndustry 4.0-holds the promise of increased flexibility in manufacturing, along with mass customization, better quality, and improved productivity. It thus enables companies to cope with the challenges of producing increasingly individualized products with a short lead-time to market and higher quality. Intelligent manufacturing plays an important role in Industry 4.0. Typical resources are converted into intelligent objects so that they are able to sense, act, and behave within a smart environment. In order to fully understand intelligent manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0, this paper provides a comprehensive review of associated topics such as intelligent manufacturing, Internet of Things （IoT）- enabled manufacturing, and cloud manufacturing. Similarities and differences in these topics are highlighted based on our analysis. We also review key technologies such as the loT, cyber-physical systems （CPSs）, cloud computing, big data analytics （BDA）, and information and communications technology （ICT） that are used to enable intelligent manufacturing. Next, we describe worldwide movements in intelligent manufacturing, including governmental strategic plans from different countries and strategic plans from major international companies in the European Union, United States, Japan, and China. Finally, we present current challenges and future research directions. The concepts discussed in this paper will spark new ideas in the effort to realize the much-anticipated Fourth Industrial Revolution.
