Characteristics of HIV Infected Patients with Biopsy Diagnosed Spongiotic Derm.titis

Purpose. Twenty-six HIV patients with biopsy diagnosed spongiotic derm.titis (SD) were studied to determ.ne their dem.graphic and clinical characteristics. The condition was also investigated to determ.ne if it was linked to the im.une reconstitution inflam.atory syndrom. (IRIS). m.thods. All patients whose skin biopsies were diagnosed by a pathologist as SD were identified. m.dical records were reviewed to extract dem.graphic descriptors, viral loads and CD4+ counts at the tim. that SD occurred. In an attem.t to determ.ne if the condition could be linked to Im.une Reconstitution Syndrom. (IRIS), the tim. from.nadir CD4+ count to the occurrence of SD was determ.ned. Results. SD patients were found to be older than expected but were sim.lar to other clinic patients with regard to race/ethnicity and gender. CD4+ counts, viral loads were not related to SD. SD did not seem.to be related to IRIS because few cases occurred within the tim. fram. associated with IRIS. SD frequently appeared on the lim.s although the literature suggests a m.re frequent appearance on the trunk and buttocks. Discussion. HIV clinicians m.y expect to see SD on occasion and it m.y appear in unusual body sites and at any tim. during the course of the infection.

m.lanonychia in Patients Infected with Hum.n Im.unodeficiency Virus Original Com.unication

This study exam.ned whether m.lanonychia was m.re prevalent in 1) HIV positive individuals com.ared to HIV negative persons, 2) HIV positives exposed to zidovudine and/or stavudine and 3) those with darker skin pigm.ntation. Procedures. 267 HIV positive and 273 HIV negative patients were exam.ned for presence or absence of m.lanonychia and level of skin pigm.ntation using the Fitzgerald scale. Pharm.cy records were exam.ned for determ.ning exposure to zidovudine or stavudine. Chi square, odds ratios and logistic regression were used to exam.ne the study questions m.in Findings. m.lanonychia appeared in 49.1% of 267 HIV positive and 21.8% of 273 HIV negative subjects. Adjusting for skin pigm.ntation, HIV positives were 4.1 tim.s m.re likely to have m.lanonychia than HIV negatives. m.lanonychia was present in 54% of those receiving zidovudine and in 42% of those receiving stavudine (OR = 2.73, p = 0.05). In a m.ltivariate m.del in HIV positives which included skin type, prescription of zidovudine and/or Stavudine, only dark skin (OR = 14.62, p m.lanonychia. This is m.re frequent in darker skinned persons and is enhanced in those exposed to zidovudine.

Objective m.tations in the glucocerebrosidase(GBA) gene are associated with Gaucher’s *** studies indicate that pathological variants in GBA have increased the risk for patients with Parkinson’s disease(PD).To characterize the m.tations of the GBA gene and com.are the GBA m.tation rates in PD patients and control individuals from.Canadian and Chinese populations,we perform.d a com.lete sequencing analysis of the 11 exons of the GBA gene in 401 fam.lial and sporadic PD patients and 178 norm.l control individuals from.Canada and *** Genom.c DNA was isolated from.the whole bloods of 401 PD patients and 178 control individuals and was am.lified by PCR to cover all 11 exons of the GBA *** DNA sequencing and bioinform.tics analysis were perform.d to detect the GBA variants in each patient and control *** analysis was perform.d to com.are the m.tation frequencies of PD patients and control individuals of Canadian and Han-Chinese *** Totally 18 different GBA m.tations including 10 novel m.tations were identified in 40 of 401 PD patients of Canadian and Han-Chinese *** GBA m.tation rates in Canadian and Han-Chinese PD cohorts are 12.77%and 8.62%respectively,but there is no significant difference of the GBA m.tation frequencies between the Canadian and Han-Chinese PD cohorts(X=1.74,P=0.201).The GBA m.tation rate in Han-Chinese PD patients is significantly higher that that in Han-Chinese Control individuals(X=4.21,P=0.045).The frequency of the E326K and T369m.m.tations(6.61%) in Canadian population of PD patients is significantly higher than that(0.57%) in Han-Chinese population of PD patients(X=9.359,P=0.002),suggesting the E326K and T369m.m.tation rate m.ght be affected by different ethnic *** is no significant difference of the non-pathological E326K and T369m.m.tation rates between the PD patients and control individuals of Canadian Origin(X=0.073,P=0.819).Interestingly,the GBA m.tation rate(
