Particle migration dynamics in viscoelastic fluids in spiral channels have attracted interest in recent years due to potential applications in the 3D focusing and label-free sorting of particles and *** a number of recent studies,the underlying mechanism of Dean-coupled elasto-inertial migration in spiral microchannels is not fully *** this work,for the first time,we experimentally demonstrate the evolution of particle focusing behavior along a channel downstream length at a high blockage *** found that flow rate,device curvature,and medium viscosity play important roles in particle lateral *** results illustrate the full focusing pattern along the downstream channel length,with side-view imaging yielding observations on the vertical migration of focused ***,we anticipate that these results will offer a useful guide for elasto-inertial microfluidics device design to improve the efficiency of 3D focusing in cell sorting and cytometry applications.

Semiconductor mode-locked lasers(MLLs)are promising frequency comb sources for dense wavelength-divisionmultiplexing(DWDM)data *** data communication requires a frequency-stable comb source in a temperature-varying environment and a minimum tone spacing of 25 GHz to support high-speed DWDM *** the best of our knowledge,however,to date,there have been no demonstrations of comb sources that simultaneously offer a high repetition rate and stable mode spacing over an ultrawide temperature ***,we report a frequency comb source based on a quantum dot(QD)MLL that generates a frequency comb with stable mode spacing over an ultrabroad temperature range of 20–120℃.The two-section passively mode-locked In As QD MLL comb source produces an ultra-stable fundamental repetition rate of 25.5 GHz(corresponding to a 25.5 GHz spacing between adjacent tones in the frequency domain)with a variation of 0.07 GHz in the tone spacing over the tested temperature *** keeping the saturable absorber reversely biased at-2 V,stable mode-locking over the whole temperature range can be achieved by tuning the current of the gain section only,providing easy control of the *** an elevated temperature of 100℃,the device shows a 6 d B comb bandwidth of 4.81 nm and 31 tones with>36 d B optical signal-to-noise *** corresponding relative intensity noise,averaged between 0.5 GHz and 10 GHz,is-146 d Bc∕*** results show the viability of the In As QD MLLs as ultra-stable,uncooled frequency comb sources for low-cost,large-bandwidth,and low-energy-consumption optical data communications.

Toward a Test Protocol for Conducted Energy Weapons

Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs), such as those manufactured by TASER International Inc., are seeing increased use by law enforcement agencies as a less lethal force option;but, at the same time, these weapons are also seeing an increased level of concern in terms of their safety of use. In order to enable consistent evaluation of CEW performance, a systematic protocol for testing the electrical output of such weapons is required. In this paper, we propose a test specification for CEWs, designed to calculate the key performance and electrical safety parameters. The weapon is fired into a specified load, and current or voltage data are acquired, from which a set of electrical parameters are calculated and recorded. The protocol is based on experience of testing 6000 CEWs in the labs affiliated with the authors. This test protocol is designed to enable systematic testing, evaluation and research on CEW’s, including identification of weapons which are out of specification, determination of changes in weapon characteristics over time, and evaluation of weapons post-incident. Based on the proposed test protocol, we evaluate and report on electrical output produced by 208 X26TM and128 M26TM TASER? weapons. Results are shown in terms of proposed summary parameters and in terms of manufacturer’s performance specifications.
