The SECARB Anthropogenic Test: A US Integrated CO<sub>2</sub>Capture, Transportation and Storage Test

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) seeks to validate the feasibility of injecting, storing and monitoring CO2 in the subsurface (geologic storage) as an approach to mitigate atmospheric emissions of CO2. In an effort to pro- mote the development of a framework and the infrastructure necessary for the validation and deployment of carbon sequestration technologies, DOE established seven Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSPs). The South- east Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB), whose lead organization is the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB), represents 13 States within the southeastern United States of America (USA). The SECARB Anthropo- genic Test R&D project is a demonstration of the deployment of CO2 capture, transport, geologic storage and monitor- ing technology. This project is an integral component of a plan by Southern Company, and its subsidiary, Alabama Power, to demonstrate integrated CO2 capture, transport and storage technology. The capture component of the test takes place at the James M. Barry Electric Generating Plant (Plant Barry) in Bucks, Alabama. The capture facility, equivalent to 25 MW, will utilize post-combustion amine capture technology licensed from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America. CO2 captured at the plant will be transported by pipeline for underground storage in a deep, saline geologic formation within the Citronelle Dome located in Citronelle, Alabama. At the end of the first quarter of 2012, up to 550 tonnes of CO2 per day will be captured and transported twelve miles by pipeline to the storage site for injection and subsurface storage. The injection target is the lower Cretaceous Paluxy Formation which occurs at 9400 feet. Trans- portation and injection operations will continue for one to two years. Early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease(PD):how we can improve the therapeutic approach:PD is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor dysfunctions(tremor,rigidity,bradykinesia and impaired posture/balance)elicited by selective depletion of dopaminergic(DA)neurons in substantia nigra pars *** neuron loss is associated with neuronal inclusions of the phosphorylatedα-synuclein protein called Lewy body(Shults,2006).Although the underlying neurodegenerative process is not affected,the management of PD patients has been revolutionized with the introduction of levodopa and DA drugs in the routine therapy,which ensures initial symptomatic relief of motor functions through the DA supply in the nigrostriatal *** drugs are currently the best option for treating PD,although their chronic use is associated with progressive dopamine resistance and loss of effectiveness in the recovery of motor *** therapeutic strategies,including agonists of DA receptors,monoamine oxide B inhibitors,and even deep brain stimulation techniques have been developed to overcome these clinical ***,these therapeutic approaches cannot restore PD-compromised functions,as irreversible DA neurodegeneration has occurred in substantia nigra pars compacta when first motor symptoms *** nigrostriatal system is traditionally considered as the first region affected by neuronal impairment in Parkinsonisms;however,α-synuclein aggregation appears in a pre-motor stage of the disease in the enteric nervous system(ENS).

Essential infantile esotropia with inferior oblique hyperfunction：long term follow-up of 6 muscles approach

AIM： To evaluate long term follow-up （10y） of 6 muscle surgical approach in essential infantile esotropia （EIE）.METHODS： A 6 muscle approach to EIE was retrospectively evaluated in patients with inferior oblique （IO） hyperfunction and lateral rectus （LR） pseudoparalysis, who underwent surgery at different ages. Different clinical characters were analyzed pre- and postoperatively, in patients who underwent a 6 muscles approach ≤4 years of age. All patients underwent a multiple muscles approach： bilateral medial recti （MR） recession （4-5 mm）, bilateral LR resection （lower than 7 mm） and bilateral IO recession and anteroposition. Of 108 children with preoperative angle ≥＋30 prism diopters （PD） and IO hyperfunction were selected from larger cohort of patients （n=213, 103 females and 110 males） after excluding patients with： angle variability, who underwent reoperation and with incomplete follow up. Preoperative assessment and complete orthoptic examination were performed. Follow-up was performed 3mo, 2, 5 and 10y after surgery. Statistical analysis was performes using SAS statistical software package （version 9.1, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA）.RESULTS： Ten years follow up data analysis showed the following percentage of orthotropic patients：（0 PD）： 3mo, 22.2%; 2y, 16.7%; 5y, 25.0% and 10y, 27.8%. A slight, significant （P〈0.01）, increase of 2y follow up residual deviation was found when compared to 3mo one. Stationary surgical results is reported during time, with a trend of mean residual deviation reduction （P=0.04）.CONCLUSION： Our results confirm the reliability of multiple muscles surgical approach in the treatment of patients affected by EIE with OI hyperfunction.

Testicular parenchymal abnormalities in Klinefelter syndrome： a question of cancer？ Examination of 40 consecutive patients

Klinefelter syndrome （KS） is a hypergonadotropic hypogonadism characterized by a 47, XXY karyotype. The risk of testicular cancer in KS is of interest in relation to theories about testicular cancer etiology generally; nevertheless it seems to be low. We evaluated the need for imaging and serum tumor markers for testicular cancer screening in KS. Participants were 40 consecutive KSpatients, enrolled from December 2009 to January 2013. Lactate dehydrogenase （LDH）, alpha-fetoprotein （AFP）, and beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin subunit （^-HCG） serum levels assays and testicular ultrasound （US） with color Doppler, were carried out at study entry, after 6 months and every year for 3 years. Abdominal magnetic resonance （MR） was performed in KS when testicular US showed micro-calcifications, testicular nodules and cysts. Nearly 62% of the KS had regular testicular echotexture, 37.5% showed an irregular echotexture and 17.5% had micro-calcifications and cysts. Eighty seven percent of KS had a regular vascular pattern, 12.5% varicocele, 12.5% nodules 〈1 cm, but none had nodules 〉1 cm. MR ruled out the diagnosis of cancer in all KS with testicular micro calcifications, nodules and cysts. No significant variations in LDH, AFP, and ^-HCG levels and in US pattern have been detected during follow-up. We compared serum tumor markers and US pattern between KS with and without cryptorchidism and no statistical differences were found. We did not find testicular cancer in KS, and testicular US, tumor markers and MR were, in selected cases, useful tools for correctly discriminating benign from malignant lesions.

This work is aimed at the development of new green composite materials through the incorporation of the solid organic waste(SOW)in a thermoplastic *** being ground,the organic waste was exposed to a sterilization process,though an autoclave cycle,in order to obtain a complete removal of the bacterial *** SOW was found to have a high amount of water,about 65-70%,which made uneconomical its further treatment to reduce the water ***,a water soluble polymer,poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)was chosen in order to produce SOW based ***,in order to reduce the viscosity of the PVA/SOW slurry,further amount of water was *** very low viscosity attained by the water suspension allowed to process the PVA/SOW blends by a pressure-free process,for the production of samples,which were afterwards subjected to physical and mechanical *** tests showed the promising properties of the developed *** particular,the relevance of porosity was *** the water amount involved a signification increase of porosity,due to a faster water evaporation during *** the other hand,compared to neat PVA,addition of SOW allowed to significantly decrease the porosity of the produced *** this,the mechanical properties of the PVA/SOW blends were shown to be lower than those of neat PVA processed analogously.

A Mixed Radiative-Convective Technique for the Calibration of Heat Flux Sensors in Hypersonic Flow

The ability to measure the very high heat fluxes that typically occur during the hypersonic re-entry phase of space vehicles is generally considered a subject of great importance in the aerospace *** of the sensors used for these measurements need to be checked periodically and re-calibrated *** bottleneck relates to the need to procure thermal sources that are able to generate reliable reference heat fluxes in the range between 100 and 1000 kW/m^(2)(as order of magnitude).In the present study,a method is presented by which,starting from a calibration system with a capacity of approximately 500 kW/m^(2) only,heat fluxes in the range of interest for hypersonic applications are *** related procedure takes advantage of established standards for the characterization of a radiative heat *** also builds on the hybrid radiative-convective nature of typical hypersonic heat fluxes and the yet poorly explored possibility to use convective sources of heat to produce high-intensity *** reliability of such a strategy has been tested using a high enthalpy supersonic flow facility relying on an electric arc-heater and pure Nitrogen as work ***-point heat fluxes have been successfully measured(with reasonable accuracy)in the range between 600 and 1500 kW/m^(2) for values of the centerline enthalpy spanning the interval from to 6 to 24 MJ/kg.
