Transcriptomic biomarkers for predicting response to neoadjuvant treatment in oesophageal cancer

Oesophageal cancer is a devastating disease with poor outcomes and is the sixth leading cause of cancer death *** the setting of resectable disease,there is clear evidence that neoadjuvant chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy result in improved ***,only 15%-30%of patients obtain a histopathological response to neoadjuvant therapy,often at the expense of significant *** are no predictive biomarkers in routine clinical use in this setting and the ability to stratify patients for treatment could dramatically improve *** this review,we aim to outline current progress in evaluating predictive transcriptomic biomarkers for neoadjuvant therapy in oesophageal cancer and discuss the challenges facing biomarker development in this *** place these issues in the wider context of recommendations for biomarker development and *** majority of studies focus on messenger RNA(mRNA)and microRNA(miRNA)*** studies report a range of different genes involved in a wide variety of pathways and biological processes,and this is explained to a large extent by the different platforms and analysis methods *** studies are also vastly underpowered so are not suitable for identifying a candidate *** molecular subtypes of oesophageal cancer have been proposed,although little is known about how these relate to clinical *** anticipate that the accumulating wealth of genomic and transcriptomic data and clinical trial collaborations in the coming years will provide unique opportunities to stratify patients in this poor-prognosis disease and recommend that future biomarker development incorporates well-designed retrospective and prospective analyses.

Survival outcomes in early-onset oesophageal adenocarcinoma patients:A systematic review and meta-analyses

Pancreatic cancer: A review of clinical diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment and outcomes

This review aims to outline the most up-to-date knowledge of pancreatic adenocarcinoma risk, diagnostics, treatment and outcomes, while identifying gaps that aim to stimulate further research in this understudied malignancy. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is a lethal condition with a rising incidence, predicted to become the second leading cause of cancer death in some regions. It often presents at an advanced stage, which contributes to poor five-year survival rates of 2%-9%, ranking firmly last amongst all cancer sites in terms of prognostic outcomes for patients. Better understanding of the risk factors and symptoms associated with this disease is essential to inform both health professionals and the general population of potential preventive and/or early detection measures. The identification of high-risk patients who could benefit from screening to detect pre-malignant conditions such as pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and mucinous cystic neoplasms is urgently required, however an acceptable screening test has yet to be identified. The management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma is evolving, with the introduction of new surgical techniques and medical therapies such as laparoscopic techniques and neo-adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, however this has only led to modest improvements in outcomes. The identification of novel biomarkers is desirable to move towards a precision medicine era, where pancreatic cancer therapy can be tailored to the individual patient, while unnecessary treatments that have negative consequences on quality of life could be prevented for others. Research efforts must also focus on the development of new agents and delivery systems. Overall, considerable progress is required to reduce the burden associated with pancreatic cancer. Recent, renewed efforts to fund large consortia and research into pancreatic adenocarcinoma are welcomed, but further streams will be necessary to facilitate the momentum needed to

Status and prospects for symmetric organic redox flow batteries

As environmental concerns from fossil fuel consumption intensify, large-scale energy storage becomes imperative for the integration of renewable sources like wind, hydro, and solar with the electrical *** flow batteries, particularly those employing organic molecules, are positioned as a key technology for this purpose. This review explores the growing field of symmetric organic redox flow batteries(ORFBs) within this context. Unlike traditional asymmetric designs based on unique active materials for each electrode, symmetric ORFBs involve a single bipolar species for both electrodes. This review highlights the benefits of a symmetric design, and categorizes five distinct classes of organic bipolar molecules used in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. By providing a comprehensive overview of their cell cycling and performance characteristics, the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse categories of bipolar molecules are highlighted for both solvent systems, as are opportunities for future development. This should guide new research directions and advance the development of practical symmetric ORFBs.

An experimental approach to addressing ecological questions related to the conservation of plant biodiversity in china

We briefly introduce and describe seven questions related to community structure and biodiversity conservation that can be addressed using field experiments,and provide the context for using the vast geographic diversity,biodiversity,and network of Nature Reserves in china to perform these *** is the world's third largest country,has a diverse topography,covers five climatic zones from cold-temperate to tropical,has 18 vegetation biomes ranging from Arctic / alpine tundra and desert to Tropical rain forest,and supports the richest biodiversity in the temperate northern hemisphere( > 10%of the world total). But this tremendous natural resource is under relentless assault that threatens to destroy biodiversity and negatively impact the services ecosystems provide. In an attempt to prevent the loss of biodiversity,china has established 2,729 nature reserves which cover 14.84% of the nation' s area. Unfortunately underfunding,mismanagement,illegal activities,invasive species and global climate change threaten the effectiveness of these protected areas. Attention has focused on protecting species and their habitats before degradation and loss of either species or habitats occur. Here we argue that we must move beyond the simple protection of ecosystems,beyond their description,and by using experiments,try to understand how ecosystems work. This new understanding will allow us to design conservation programs,perform restoration of damaged or degraded areas,and address resource management concerns( e.g.,agriculture,logging,mining,hunting) more effectively than with the current approach of ad hoc reactions to ecological and environmental problems. We argue that improving our understanding of nature can best be done using well designed,replicated,and typically manipulative field experiments.

Factors limiting the recruitment of Quercus schottkyana,a dominant evergreen oak in SW china

Quercus schottkyana is a dominant species of oak in the Asian evergreen broad-leaved forests in southwestern china but seedlings are uncommon and recruitment is rare. Annual acorn production by Q. schottkyana is variable and the acorns are exposed to a series of mortality risks. Understanding the factors that limit recruitment of the oak requires knowledge of the oak's life cycle from acorn production to germination and seedling establishment. In this study, we first tested the effects of acorn density on establishment of seedlings by placing batches of acorns at different densities throughout the study ***, we tested the effects of herbivores on seedling survival by erecting fences around both natural and transplanted seedling populations. Our results show that even though the rate of seedling establishment increases as acorn density increases(for 32-8000 acorns?m^(-2)), survival rates of seedlings in the field were generally low(0-0.6%). We show that seedling recruitment of Q. schottkyana is mainly limited to the acorn stage where 88% of the acorns died from the combined effects of desiccation and predation by weevils(curculio) and bark beetles(coccotrypes sp.). Herbivory results in the death of some seedlings and consequently also affects the recruitment of seedlings of Q. schottkyana.

Flowering and Fruiting Phenology of 24 Plant Species on the North Slope of Mt. Qomolangma (Mt. Everest)

Phenological background information for alpine species is limited from extremely high altitudes. Flowering and fruiting phenology was monitored for 24 plant species at 5,180 m a.s.1, near the base camp area on the north slope of Mt. Qomolangma （Mt. Everest） in Tibet, western china. The dates of first flowering, peak flowering, end of flowering, first fruiting, peak fruiting and flowering period were recorded. There was a wide variation in onset of flowering, long flowering duration, a relative synchrony between the onset of flowering and fruiting, and one species was exclusively vegetative. These results suggest that the species have evolved various phenological strategies as adaptations to the short growing season with limited resources and pollinators in this harsh alpine environment at extremely high elevations. With a background of global warming, local plant species will represent an advancing trend in onset of flowering.

Refnement of the supercontinent cycle with Hf, Nd and Sr isotopes

The combined use of Hf,Nd and Sr isotopes is more useful in understanding the supercontinent cycle than the use of only Hf isotopic data from detrital *** and Nd seawater isotopes,although not as precise as εNd and εHf distributions,also record input from ocean ridge *** detrital zircons where sources cannot be precisely located because of crustal recycling,both the location and tectonic setting often can be constrained for whole-rock Nd isotopic ***,primary zircon sources may not reside on the same continent as derivative detrital zircons due to supercontinent breakup and *** to all of the isotopic studies are geographic sampling biases reflecting outcrop distributions,river system sampling,or geologists,and these may be responsible for most of the decorrelation observed between isotopic *** between 3.5 and 2 Ga based on εHf median values of four detrital zircon databases as well as our compiled εNd database are noisy but uniformly distributed in time,whereas data between 2 and 1 Ga data are more tightly clustered with smaller *** age peaks suggest that both isotopic systems are sampling similar types of *** after 1 Ga and before 3.5 Ga do we see wide variations and significant disagreement between databases,which may partially reflect variations in both the number of sample locations and the number of samples per *** and internal orogens show similar patterns in εNd and εHfwith age suggesting that both juvenile and reworked crustal components are produced in both types of orogens with similar ***,both types of orogens clearly produce more juvenile isotopic signatures in retreating mode than in advancing *** secular changes in εHf and εNd distributions correlate with the supercontinent *** supercontinent breakup is correlated with short-lived decreasing εHf and εNd （≤ 100 Myr） for most supercontinents,there is no isotopic evidence for
