The Silk Road stretched over land and across seas connecting Europe,Africa,and *** trade of medicine along these routes has had profound impacts on the populations and traditions they have come into contact *** Medicine is no exception as it has taken numerous nonnative products and incorporated them into the unique philosophical construct of systematic correspondences that govern its *** looking at the four categories of primary source materials and studying the history of medical exchange along the Silk Road,we can determine how and where this information is used in Chinese *** Materia Medica(ben cao本草)texts are the first source of information for this study that will explore multiple sources to better understand the development of Chinese Medicine in relation to the rest of the world.

Energy Consumption Analysis and Characterization of Aerospace Manufacturing Facilities in the United States–A Step towards Sustainable Development

In this study,information on energy usage in the United States(U.S.)aerospace manufacturing sector has been analyzed and then represented as energy intensities(kWh/m2)to establish benchmark data and to compare facilities of varying ***,public sources were identified and the data from these previously published sources were aggregated to determine the energy usage of aerospace manufacturing facilities within the *** this dataset,a sample of 28 buildings were selected and the energy intensity for each building was estimated from the ***,as a part of this study the energy data for three additional aerospace manufacturing facilities in the *** collected *** data was analyzed and the energy intensity(kWh/m2)for each facility was calculated and then compared with the energy intensities of the 28 buildings from the *** different indicators of energy consumption in aerospace manufacturing facilities were used as comparators to assist facility managers with determining potential energy savings and help in the decision-making *** average,aerospace manufacturing facilities in the United States spent 4 cents for each dollar of sale on *** energy intensity(kWh/m2)and the power intensity(W/m2)for each facility were calculated based on the actual facility energy *** power intensity for these facilities ranges from 34 to 134 W/*** energy intensity ranged from 232 to 949 kWh/*** found that the power intensity could be used to estimate energy consumption when the annual operating hours of the facility are *** to estimate the energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.

Machine learning models used for energy conversion system optimization cannot extrapolate outside the bounds of training data and often produce physically unrealistic results when making predictions in regions of sparse training *** toy model concept introduced in this work allows machine learning models to extrapolate to some extent and also reduces the possibility of physically unrealistic *** uses physics to shrink the model input(feature space)of data-based models,so that extrapolations in the data-based feature space tend to become interpolations in the physics-based(toy variable)feature *** physics-based model can be any model or experiment that can shrink the feature space without affecting interpolation and is termed a‘toy model’because it does not need to be accurate or make predictions of *** concept has been applied to model experimental data obtained from three complex systems:*** forces on a spinning and vibrating baseball with inclined axis of rotation(toy model:CFD model),*** turbine efficiency(toy model:PIV images of flow through stationary blades),and *** generated engine emissions(toy model:system-level 1-D model).All extrapolations were converted into interpolations for the first two systems while a 75%conversion was achieved for the emission *** engine toy model produced 736,281 possible feature spaces from which one unique feature space was chosen for every prediction based on agreement between different machine learning *** is shown that the ability of the toy variables to reorganize the data is important,while their accuracy is relatively *** toy model concept was demonstrated to work with neural networks and regression,and can be used to increase model robustness or reduce training data requirements.

Objective:The bulb of Albuca bracteata Jacq.,and Albuca setosa commonly used in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa for the treatment of several types of disease conditions including diabetes,was investigated for their phytochemical contents and antioxidant ***:The antioxidant activity was determined by evaluating the effect of various solvent extracts(acetone,methanol,ethanol and water) on 2,2 – diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) scavenging activity,2,20– azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salt(ABTS),ferric reducing power,hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide scavenging activity while the various extracts were also analysed for phytochemical their ***:The results obtained indicate that polyphenols,proanthocyanidins,saponins and alkaloids are present in higher *** composition of phenols(117 mg/g),flavonols(26.28 mg/g),proanthocyanidins(84.85 mg/g) and flavonoids(5.36 mg/g) were significantly higher in the acetone extract while saponin and alkaloids contents were higher in the aqueous *** studies of the extracts for nitric oxide,hydrogen peroxide,ABTS and DPPH showed high antioxidant potential in a concentration-dependent manner that was not significantly different from Vitamin C,BHT and Rutin used as standard *** methanol extract showed higher ferric reducing potential compared to the aqueous extract but was significantly different from Vitamin C,BHT and ***:This implies that the bulb of Albuca bracteata may serve as a natural source of antioxidants,which together with the numerous phytochemicals present,could account for its folkloric use as a medicinal plant.

Enhanced catalytic degradation of organic pollutants by multi-stimuli activated multiferroic nanoarchitectures

Smart catalysts that can simultaneously utilize multiple energy sources will have a significant positive impact on the inefficiencies of conventional environmental remediation approaches,and will address their high energy *** this work,we have manufactured multiferroic magnetoelectric photocatalysts that can be simultaneously activated using multiple energy sources for the degradation of organic *** catalysts are composed of CoFe2O4@BiFeO3(CFO@BFO)nanooctahedrons(NOs),CFO@BFO nanocubes(NCs),and CFO@BFO nanowires(NWs),and were successful in harnessing energy from three different energy sources,including UV-vis light,acoustically mediated mechanical vibrations and magnetic *** CFO@BFO NOs displayed the most enhanced degradation,reaching 93%,96%,and 99%degradation of RhB dye within 1 h under light,ultrasound,and magnetic fields,*** these energy sources were used simultaneously,significantly increased reaction rates were observed compared to the single-energy source *** of radical trapping experiments indicate that radical species i.e.,OH·and O2·^-play a dominant role in catalytic degradation of organic pollutant,RhB,under all three *** results will contribute significantly to the development of new environmental technologies that are highly versatile in nature and able to adapt to changing environments to deliver efficient environmental remediation.

Magnetic helical micro- and nanorobots can perform 3D navigation in various liquids with a sub- micrometer precision under low-strength rotating magnetic fields （〈 10 rer）. Since magnetic fields with low strengths are harmless to cells and tissues, magnetic helical micro/ nanorobots are promising tools for biomedical applications, such as minimally invasive surgery, cell manipulation and analysis, and targeted therapy. This review provides general information on magnetic helical micro/nanorobots, including their fabrication, motion control, and further functionalization for biomedical applications.

Improved hemostasis with major hepatic resection in the current surgical era

Background: Major hepatic resection, predominantly performed for oncologic intent, is a complex procedure with the potential for severe intraoperative hemorrhage. The current surgical era has the ability to improve hemostasis throughout the performance of major hepatic resections which decreases blood transfusions and the detrimental effects associated with transfusion. We evaluated hemostasis and outcomes in the current surgical era of performing hepatic resections. Methods: Utilizing the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database all major hepatic resections performed between 2012 and 2016 were analyzed in regards to hemostasis. Hemostasis was evaluated by the need for and magnitude of blood transfusions. Additional perioperative variables (including operative time, length of hospital stay, and mortality rates) were analyzed to assess for outcomes with hemostasis. The NSQIP results were compared to previous publications involving major hepatic resections to detect improvement in hemostasis and outcomes in the current surgical era. Results: A total of 22777 major hepatic resections met the inclusion criteria for analysis in the NSQIP database. An additional 21198 cases were compiled within the selected publications for comparative analysis. The transfusion rate in the current surgical era was 13.3% versus 38.7% in the previous era ( P = 0.0001). When a transfusion was required in the current surgical era there was a two-fold reduction in the number of units transfused (1.5 U vs. 3.8 U, P = 0.0001). Statistically significant improvements in operative time and length of hospital stay were presented within the current surgical era ( P = 0.0001). When a transfusion was required there was an increased relative risk score of 7 for mortality (4.9% vs. 0.7%, P = 0.0001), however, improvement in mortality rates did not reach statistical significance across surgical eras (1.3% vs. 4.0%, P = 0.0001).
