The effect of EMG magnitude on the masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential(mVEMP)

Introduction:The masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential(mVEMP)is a bilaterally generated,electromyographically(EMG)-mediated response innervated by the trigeminal *** purpose of the present investigation was to 1)determine whether subjects could accurately achieve and maintain a range of EMG target levels,2)to examine the effects of varied EMG levels on the latencies and amplitudes of the mVEMP,and 3)to investigate the degree of side-to-side asymmetry and any effects of EMG ***:Subjects were nine neurologically and otologically normal young adults.A high-intensity tone burst was presented monaurally while subjects were seated upright and asked to match a range of EMG target levels by clenching their *** were made from the ipsilateral and contralateral masseter muscles referenced to the ear being monaurally ***:We found that the tonic EMG target had no effect on mVEMP ***,although mVEMP amplitudes“scaled”to the EMG target,there was a tendency for the subjects’EMG level to“undershoot”the EMG target levels greater than 50 *** some individuals did generate differences in EMG activation between sides,there were no significant differences on average EMG activation between ***,while average corrected amplitude asymmetry was similar across EMG targets,some individuals demonstrated large,corrected amplitude asymmetry ***:The results of this investigation suggest that,as with cVEMP recordings,the underlying EMG activation may vary between subjects and could impact mVEMP amplitudes,yet could be mitigated by amplitude correction *** it is important to be aware that even young normal subjects have difficulty maintaining large,tonic EMG activity during the mVEMP recording.

Purpose:Vestibular impairments have been associated with a variety of cognitive deficits,most notably deficits in visuo-spatial *** Neuropsychological Vertigo Inventory(NVI)was developed to measure self-reported cognitive deficits in patients with dizziness and/or *** original French language version of the NVI includes 28 items and 7 *** purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether the statistical assessment of an English language version supported the presence of the same cognitive constructs as the French version of the ***:The English language adaptation of the NVI(referred to here as the NVIe)was administered to an unselected sample of 280 patie nts that were being evaluated for dizziness and/or vertigo in a tertiary care dizziness *** individual item scores from the NVIe were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis(EFA).Results:The results of the data analysis supported a 22-item NVIe consisting of 4 constructs:affective state,temporal memory,spatial memory,visual spatial ***:The NVIe is a new tool for screening cognitive constructs that may be affected by vestibular *** to clinical implementation of the NVIe,additional studies of reliability and convergent validity are needed.

INTRODUCTION The recently completed Easton Collection Center in Flagstaff,Arizona,is the latest addition to The Museum of Northern Arizona(MNA).The Museum of Northern Arizona is a private institution founded in 1928 with the mission to inspire a sense of love and responsibility for the beauty and diversity of the Colorado Plateau through collecting,studying,interpreting,and preserving the region’s natural and cultural *** new Easton Collection Center facility consists of just over 17,000 square feet of floor *** was designed to house a significant portion of MNA’s extensive and valuable cultural and natural science collections,providing appropriate indoor environmental conditions in a sustainable way and upon completion of construction was certified LEED Platinum by the United States Green Building Council.

Nature of surface oxygen intermediates on TiO2 during photocatalytic splitting of water

Titanium dioxide（TiO2） is the most widely studied solid photocatalyst, but when applied to photocatalytic splitting of water to H2 and O2, the evolution rate of H2 is low and decreases with reaction time. The origin of the decreasing evolution rate for the photocatalytic splitting of water was investigated for the first time by directly monitoring the surface species on TiO2 during water photocatalysis with in situ attenuated total reflectance（ATR）-Fourier transform infrared（FTIR）spectroscopy. The in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopic analysis during UV illumination of TiO2 immersed in water reveals that surface dioxygen and hydroxyl species are formed on TiO2： charged Ti—OOH-, peroxo Ti（O2）2-, and bridging Ti—（OH＋）—Ti groups. The accumulation of these surface oxygenated species on the TiO2 photocatalyst blocks the activation of H2O on the surface titania sites and is responsible for the decreasing H2 evolution rate and absence of O2 evolution.

Transfer learning aided high-throughput computational design of oxygen evolution reaction catalysts in acid conditions

Sluggish oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in acid conditions is one of the bottlenecks that prevent the wide adoption of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer for green hydrogen *** recent advancements in developing high-performance catalysts for acid OER,the current electrocatalysts still rely on iridium-and ruthenium-based materials,urging continuous efforts to discover better performance catalysts as well as reduce the usage of noble *** structured oxide is a family of potential high-performance acid OER catalysts with a flexible compositional space to tune the electrochemical ***,exploring the large composition space of pyrochlore compounds demands an imperative approach to enable efficient *** we present a highthroughput screening pipeline that integrates density functional theory calculations and a transfer learning approach to predict the critical properties of pyrochlore *** high-throughput screening recommends three sets of candidates for potential acid OER applications,totaling 61 candidates from 6912 pyrochlore *** addition to 3d-transition metals,p-block metals are identified as promising dopants to improve the catalytic activity of pyrochlore *** work demonstrates not only an efficient approach for finding suitable pyrochlores towards acid OER but also suggests the great compositional flexibility of pyrochlore compounds to be considered as a new materials platform for a variety of applications.

Recovery rates of combination antibiotic therapy using in vitro microdialysis simulating in vivo conditions

Microdialysis is a technique used to measure the unbound antibiotic concentration in the interstitial spaces, the target site of action. In vitro recovery studies are essential to calibrating the microdialysis system for in vivo studies. The effect of a combination of antibiotics on recovery into microdialysate requires investigation. In vitro microdialysis recovery studies were conducted on a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin, in a simulated in vivo model. Comparison was made between recoveries for three different concentrations and three different perfusate flow rates. The overall relative recovery for vancomycin was lower than that of tobramycin. For tobramycin, a concentration of 20μg/mL and flow rate of 1.0μL/min had the best recovery. A concentration of 5.0μg/mL and flow rate of 1.0μL/min yielded maximal recovery for vancomycin. Large molecular size and higher protein binding resulted in lower relative recoveries for vancomycin. Perfusate flow rates and drug concentrations affected the relative recovery when a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin was tested. Low perfusate flow rates were associated with higher recovery rates. For combination antibiotic measurement which includes agents that are highly protein bound, in vitro studies performed prior to in vivo studies may ensure the reliable measurement of unbound concentrations.

Optimal and interactive keyframe selection for motion capture

Motion capture is increasingly used in games and movies, but often requires editing before it can be used, for many reasons. The motion may need to be adjusted to correctly interact with virtual objects or to fix problems that result from mapping the motion to a character of a different size or, beyond such technical requirements, directors can request stylistic ***, editing is laborious because of the lowlevel representation of the data. While existing motion editing methods accomplish modest changes, larger edits can require the artist to "re-animate" the motion by manually selecting a subset of the frames as *** this paper, we automatically find sets of frames to serve as keyframes for editing the motion. We formulate the problem of selecting an optimal set of keyframes as a shortest-path problem, and solve it efficiently using dynamic programming. We create a new simplified animation by interpolating the found keyframes using a naive curve fitting technique. Our algorithm can simplify motion capture to around 10% of the original number of frames while retaining most of its detail. By simplifying animation with our algorithm, we realize a new approach to motion editing and stylization founded on the timetested keyframe interface. We present results that show our algorithm outperforms both research algorithms and a leading commercial tool.

Review of mass-flow hopper design with respect to stress fields and surcharge loads

Current procedures for mass-flow hopper design are based on the radial stress theory developed byJenike and involve the determination of the critical outlet dimensions for flow to be initiated. These procedures ignore the surcharge loads on the hopper and involve a study of the passive or arched stress field that exists under flow conditions. An alternative approach as applied to hopper wall load analysis is to employ the horizontal slice method. The arched stress field and horizontal slice methods of analysis are compared. The influence of surcharge loads in the determination of hopper geometry is investigated.
