The effect of diet-induced obesity on extracellular matrix remodeling during skeletal muscle regeneration

Diet-induced obesity has previously been shown to occur with the concomitant rise in the expression of proin-flammatory cytokines and increases in collagen *** it has been known that the regenerative process of skeletal muscle is altered in obese mice following an acute muscle inj..y,we sought to examine differences in the expression of various markers of extracellular matrix remodeling and *** laboratory has previously reported an impaired inflammatory and protein synthetic signaling in these mice that may contribute negatively to the muscle regenerative *** expand upon this previous investigation,tissues from these animals un-derwent further analysis to determine the extent of changes to the regenerative response within the extracellular matrix,including transcriptional changes in CollagenⅠ,CollagenⅢ,and ***,we show that the expression of CollagenⅢ:Ⅰis significantly increased at 3-days post-inj..y in obese inj..ed animals compared to lean inj..ed animals(p=0.0338),and by 28-days the obese inj..ed animals exhibit a significantly lower CollagenⅢ:Ⅰthan their lean inj..ed counterparts(p=0.0035).We demonstrate an impaired response to an acute muscle inj..y in obese mice when compared with lean ***,further studies are required to elucidate translational consequences of these changes,as well as to determine any causative mechanisms that may be driving this effect.

Managing Student Protest in Republican China： Yenching and St. j..n＇s Compared

Although similar in many respects, the two maj.. Christian universities in Republican China adopted markedly different approaches to the common challenge of student nationalism. Case studies of the May Thirtieth Movement at St. j..n＇s University and the December Ninth Movement at Yenching University illustrate the consequences of these sharply contrasting experiences. Whereas St. j..n＇s was crippled by May Thirtieth, Yenching escaped December Ninth relatively unscathed. The explanation for the contrast, this paper suggests, lies not in any fundamental disagreement in the mission of the two universities or the philosophies of their famous and forceful presidents. It must be sought instead in the different campus cultures in which the student protests originated, and in the urban micro-environments in which the two universities were located： treaty-port Shanghai and post-imperial Peking.

The role of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor in the proliferation of adult hippocampal neural stem and precursor cells

New neurons are continuously generated from resident pools of neural stem and precursor cells(NSPCs)in the adult *** are multiple pathways through which adult neurogenesis is regulated,and here we review the role of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor(NMDAR)in regulating the proliferation of NSPCs in the adult ***-dependent learning tasks,enriched environments,running,and activity-dependent synaptic plasticity,all potently up-regulate hippocampal NSPC *** first consider the requirement of the NMDAR in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity,and the role the induction of synaptic plasticity has in regulating NSPCs and newborn *** address how specific NMDAR agonists and antagonists modulate proliferation,both in vivo and in vitro,and then review the evidence supporting the hypothesis that NMDARs are present on *** believe it is important to understand the mechanisms underlying the activation of adult neurogenesis,given the potential that endogenous stem cell populations have for repopulating the hippocampus with functional new *** conditions such as age-related memory decline,neurodegeneration and psychiatric disease,mature neurons are lost or become defective;as such,stimulating adult neurogenesis may provide a therapeutic strategy to overcome these conditions.

A review of geometry-confined perovskite morphologies:From synthesis to efficient optoelectronic applications

With the continuous study of metal halide perovskite,geometry-confined technologies have been widely applied to reduce the material dimensionality and to produce pre-designed structures,which can tune optical reflectance,scattering,and absorption,thereby optimizing the performance of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices and improving their commercial *** morphologies of perovskite active layer play a pivotal role in optoelectronic properties and the resulting device *** this review,we systematically summarized recent progress in the preparation and manufacture of various perovskite geometry-confined morphologies,as well as their promising advances in different optoelectronic applications,including photodetectors,solar cells(SCs),lasers,and light-emitting diodes(LEDs).In addition,the remaining challenges and further improvements of preparation unique geometry-confined perovskite morphologies for next-generation high quality optoelectronic devices are discussed.

Ubiquitin-Specific Protease 14 （UBP14） Is Involved in Root Responses to Phosphate Deficiency in Arabidopsis

A mutant isolated from a screen of EMS-mutagenized Arabidopsis lines, per1, showed normal root hair development under control conditions but displayed an inhibited root hair elongation phenotype upon Pi deficiency. Additionally, the per1 mutant exhibited a pleiotropic phenotype under control conditions, resembling Pi-deficient plants in several aspects. Inhibition of root hair elongation upon growth on low Pi media was reverted by treatment with the Pi analog phosphite, suggesting that the mutant phenotype is not caused by a lack of Pi. Reciprocal grafting experiments revealed that the mutant rootstock is sufficient to cause the phenotype. Complementation analyses showed that the PER1 gene encodes an ubiquitin-specific protease, UBP14. The mutation caused a synonymous substitution in the 12th exon of this gene, resulting in a lower abundance of the UBP14 protein, probably as a consequence of reduced translation efficiency. Transcriptional profiling of per1 and wild-type plants subj..ted to short-term Pi starvation revealed genes that may be important for the signaling of Pi deficiency. We conclude that UBP14 function is crucial for adapting root development to the prevailing local availability of phosphate.

Spatial targeting evaluation of energy and environmental performance of waste-to-energy processing

Waste-to-energy supply chains are important potential contributors to minimising the environmental impacts of municipal solid waste by reducing the amounts of waste sent to landfill, as well as the fossil fuel consumption and environmental footprints. Accounting for the spatial and transport properties of the waste-to-energy supply chains is crucial for understanding the problem and improving the supply chain designs. The most significant challenge is the distributed nature of the waste generation and the household energy demands. The current work proposes concepts and a procedure for targeting the size of the municipal solid waste collection zone as the first step in the waste-to-energy supply chains synthesis. The formulated concepts and the provided case study reveal trends of reducing the net greenhouse gas savings and energy recovery by increasing the collection zone size. Population density has a positive correlation with the greenhouse gas saving and energy recovery performance. For smaller zone size the energy recovery from waste approaches and in some cases may surpass the energy spent on waste transportation. The energy recovery and greenhouse gas savings remain significant even for collection zones as large as 200 km2. The obtained trends are discussed and key directions for future work are proposed.

Visualizing the microtubule-associated protein tau in the nucleus

Although tau is mainly known as an axonal microtubule-associated protein,many studies indicate that it is not restricted to this subcellular *** tau’s subcellular distribution,however,is not trivial as is evident from transgenic mouse *** human tau is over-expressed,it can be immunohistochemically localized to axons and the somatodendritic domain,modeling what is found in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s ***,in wild-type mice,despite its abundance,tau is difficult to visualize even in the *** is even more challenging to detect this protein in the nucleus,where tau has been proposed to protect DNA from *** establish a framework for future studies into tau’s nuclear functions,we compared several methods to visualize endogenous nuclear tau in cell lines and mouse *** depending on the fixation and permeabilization protocol,we were able to detect nuclear tau in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells,we failed to do so in N2a murine neuroblastoma *** a second method we used subcellular fractionation of mouse tissue and found that in the nucleus tau is mainly present in a hypophosphorylated *** either full-length or truncated human tau was expressed,both accumulated in the cytoplasm,but were also found in the nuclear *** subcellular fractionation methods have their limitations,we finally isolated nuclei to probe for nuclear tau and found that the nuclei were free of cytoplasmic *** our analysis identifies several protocols for detecting tau in the nucleus where it is found in a less phosphorylated form.

Textures have become widely adopted as an essential tool for lesion detection and classification through analysis of the lesion *** this study,higher order derivative images are being employed to combat the challenge of the poor contrast across similar tissue types among certain imaging *** make good use of the derivative information,a novel concept of vector texture is firstly introduced to construct and extract several types of polyp *** widely used differential operators,i.e.,the gradient operator and Hessian operator,are utilized to generate the first and second order derivative *** derivative volumetric images are used to produce two angle-based and two vectorbased(including both angle and magnitude)***,a vector-based co-occurrence matrix is proposed to extract texture features which are fed to a random forest classifier to perform polyp *** evaluate the performance of our method,experiments are implemented over a private colorectal polyp dataset obtained from computed tomographic *** compare our method with four existing state-of-the-art methods and find that our method can outperform those competing methods over 4%-13%evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristics curves.
