Impacts of climate change on mangrove ecosystems:a region by region overview

Inter-related and spatially variable climate change factors including sea level rise,increased storminess,altered precipitation regime and increasing temperature are impacting mangroves at re-gional *** review highlights extreme regional variation in climate change threats and impacts,and how these factors impact the structure of mangrove communities,their biodiversity and geo-morphological *** these factors interplay to determine spatially variable resiliency to climate change impacts,and because mangroves are varied in type and geographical location,these systems are good models for understanding such interactions at different *** level rise is likely to in-fluence mangroves in all regions although local impacts are likely to be more *** in the frequency and intensity of storminess are likely to have a greater impact on N and Central America,Asia,Australia,and East Africa than West Africa and *** review also highlights the nu-merous geographical knowledge gaps of climate change impacts,with some regions particularly understudied(e.g.,Africa and the Middle East).While there has been a recent drive to address these knowledge gaps especially in South America and Asia,further research is required to allow research-ers to tease apart the processes that influence both vulnerability and resilience to climate change.A more globally representative view of mangroves would allow us to better understand the importance of mangrove type and landscape setting in determining system resiliency to future climate change.

Dear Editor,A variant with single substitution in the LRR-only protein CsLRR1,which regulates cucumber resistance to powdery mildew through a salicylic-acid-mediated pathway,provides a major source of resistance for cucumber *** powdery mildew(PM),mainly caused by the biotrophic pathogen Podosphaera xanthii(synonym Podosphaera fusca),poses a serious threat to cucumber crops globally,leading to substantial reductions in fruit yield and quality(Martinez-Cruz et al.,2017).

Acorn production in oak(Quercus spp.)shows considerable inter-annual variation,known as masting,which provides a natural defence against seed predators but a highly-variable supply of acorns for uses such as in commercial tree planting each *** emissions of greenhouse gases have been very widely reported to influence plant growth and seed or fruit size and quantity via the‘fertilisation effect’that leads to enhanced *** examine if acorn production in mature woodland communities will be affected by further increase in CO_(2),the contents of litter traps from a Free Air Carbon Enrichment(FACE)experiment in deciduous woodland in central England were analysed for numbers of flowers and acorns of pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)at different stages of development and their predation levels under ambient and elevated CO_(2) ***-annual variation in acorn numbers was considerable and cyclical between 2015 and 2021,with the greatest numbers of mature acorns in 2015,2017 and 2020 but almost none in *** numbers of flowers,enlarged cups,immature acorns,empty acorn cups,and galls in the litter traps also varied amongst years;comparatively high numbers of enlarged cups were recorded in 2018,suggesting *** at this site is a fruit maturation masting species(i.e.,the extent of abortion of pollinated flowers during acorn development affects mature acorn numbers greatly).Raising the atmospheric CO_(2) concentration by 150μL L^(−1),from early 2017,increased the numbers of immature acorns,and all acorn evidence(empty cups+immature acorns+mature acorns)detected in the litter traps compared to ambient controls by 2021,but did not consistently affect the numbers of flowers,enlarged cups,empty cups,or mature *** number of flowers in the elevated CO_(2) plots’litter traps was greater in 2018 than 2017,one year after CO_(2) enrichment began,whereas numbers declined in ambient *** with CO_(2) also increased the number o

Calibration of the DEM sliding friction and rolling friction parameters of a cohesionless bulk material

The discrete element method(DEM)has become a valuable tool for understanding the mechanical behaviour of granular assemblies,however,the accuracy of the DEM simulations depends on several interaction parameters such as the sliding friction and rolling friction ***,these parameters are estimated using bulk calibration approach(BCA)where the draw down test has been suggested as an effective way to approach these *** test provides up to four bulk criteria,the angle of repose,shear angle,mass flow rate and the mass loss which are used to narrow down the possible ***,there is still more research needed around it to fully understand how this methodology *** experimental and numerical study was carried out using the draw down test to assess the influence of different mass flow rates and particle shapes on DEM parameters for a cohesionless bulk *** is concluded that use of multi-sphere particles and three aperture sizes in the draw down test to calibrate the sliding and rolling friction parameters of a cohesionless bulk material can converge to a small feasible region in which a single combination of the friction coefficients can be *** calibrated sliding and rolling friction coefficients were validated using multi-sphere particles,where the maximum deviation was 5.9%from the experimental values.

The use of Montgomery salivary bypass tubes and pharyngocutaneous fistula following salvage laryngectomy

Objectives:Pharyngocutaneous fistula(PCF)is the most common complication to follow total laryngectomy(TL)and is associated with increases in length of hospital stay and with a need for revision surgery or readmission,as well as with delays in return to oral *** who require salvageTL(STL)or primary(chemo)radiation therapy are at higher risk for developing *** to the quality‐of‐life burden of PCF on patients,limiting this occurrence is ***:We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing STL with placement of Montgomery salivary bypass tube(MSBT)^(TM)for at least 2 weeks duration between 2013 and 2017 at a single *** patients all underwent free flap *** primary outcome of interest was development of *** outcomes included demographics,previous treatment,base of tongue(BOT)involvement,extent of defect,concurrent neck dissection(ND),and margin ***χ^(2) analysis was used to evaluate factors associated with ***:Forty‐four patients underwent STL with Montgomery tube placement and free flap *** developed PCF(18.2%).The average age was 61.6 years;36 patients were male(81.8%),whereas eight patients were female(18.2%).There was no association between PCF and previous chemoradiation versus radiation(15.8%vs.33.3%,P<0.30),BOT involvement versus not(11.1 vs.22.2%,P<0.38),circumferential versus partial defect(18.8%vs.17.9%,P<0.94),ND versus none(10%vs.25%,P<0.20),or margin ***:PCF complicated 18.2%of STL cases at our institution and was not associated with differences in primary treatment modality,presence of concomitant ND,extent of pharyngeal defect,BOT involvement,or positive frozen or permanent surgical margin.

Outcomes following minimally invasive dorsal cheilectomy for hallux rigidus:A systematic review

BACKGROUND Cheilectomy of the 1^(st)metatarsophalangeal joint(MTPJ)is one of the most common procedures for the management of hallux ***,there is no consensus regarding outcomes following minimally invasive dorsal cheilectomy(MIDC)for the management of hallux *** To evaluate outcomes following MIDC for the management of hallux *** During November 2023,the PubMed,EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were systematically reviewed to identify clinical studies examining outcomes following MIDC for the management of hallux *** Six studies were *** total,348 patients(370 feet)underwent MIDC for hallux rigidus at a weighted mean follow-up of 37.9±16.5 *** distribution of patients by Coughlin and Shurna's classification was recorded in 4 studies as follows:Ⅰ(58 patients,27.1%),Ⅱ(112 patients,52.3%),Ⅲ(44 patients,20.6%).Three studies performed an additional 1^(st)MTPJ arthroscopy and debridement following *** intra-articular bone debris was observed in 100%of patients in 1 *** weighted mean American orthopedic foot and ankle society score improved from a preoperative score of 68.9±3.2 to a postoperative score of *** complication rate was 8.4%,the most common of which was persistent joint pain and ***-two failures(8.7%)were ***-three secondary procedures(8.9%)were performed at a weighted mean time of 8.6±3.2 months following the index *** This systematic review demonstrated improvements in subjective clinical outcomes together with a moderate complication rate following MIDC for the management of hallux rigidus at short-term follow-up.A moderate reoperation rate at short-term follow-up was *** marked heterogeneity between included studies and paucity of high quality comparative studies limits the generation of any robust conclusions.

Metabolic flexibility has emerged as a critical determinant of CD8+T-cell antitumor activity,yet the mechanisms driving the metabolic flexibility of T cells have not been *** this study,we investigated the influence of the nuclear cap-binding complex(CBC)adaptor protein ARS2 on mature T *** doing so,we discovered a novel signaling axis that endows activated CD8+T cells with flexibility of glucose ***2 upregulation driven by CD28 signaling reinforced splicing factor recruitment to pre-mRNAs and affected approximately one-third of T-cell activation-induced alternative splicing *** these effects,the CD28-ARS2 axis suppressed the expression of the M1 isoform of pyruvate kinase in favor of PKM2,a key determinant of CD8+T-cell glucose utilization,interferon gamma production,and antitumor effector ***,PKM alternative splicing occurred independently of CD28-driven PI3K pathway activation,revealing a novel means by which costimulation reprograms glucose metabolism in CD8+T cells.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface based hybrid precoding for THz communications

Benefiting from the growth of the bandwidth,Terahertz(THz)communication can support the new application with explosive requirements of the ultra-high-speed rates for future 6G wireless *** order to compensate for the path loss of high frequency,massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output(MIMO)can be utilized for high array gains by ***,the existing THz communication with massive MIMO has remarkably high energy consumption because a large number of analog phase shifters should be used to realize the analog *** solve this problem,a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface(RIS)based hybrid precoding architecture for THz communication is developed in this paper,where the energy-hungry phased array is replaced by the energy-efficient RIS to realize the analog beamforming of the hybrid ***,based on the proposed RIS-based architecture,a sum-rate maximization problem for hybrid precoding is *** the phase shifts implemented by RIS in practice are often discrete,this sum-rate maximization problem with a non-convex constraint is ***,the sum-rate maximization problem is reformulated as a parallel Deep Neural Network(DNN)based classification problem,which can be solved by the proposed low-complexity Deep Learning based Multiple Discrete Classification(DL-MDC)hybrid precoding ***,we provide numerous simulation results to show that the proposed DL-MDC scheme works well both in the theoretical Saleh-Valenzuela channel model and practical 3GPP channel *** with existing iterative search algorithms,the proposed DL-MDC scheme significantly reduces the runtime with a negligible performance loss.
