Throughout the SMILE mission the satellite will be bombarded by radiation which gradually damages the focal plane devices and degrades their *** order to understand the changes of the CCD370s within the soft X-ray Imager,an initial characterisation of the devices has been carried out to give a baseline performance *** CCDs have been characterised,the two flight devices and the flight spa *** has been carried out at the Open University in a bespo ke cleanroom measure ment *** results show that there is a cluster of bright pixels in the flight spa re which increases in size with tempe *** at the nominal ope rating tempe rature(-120℃) it is within the procure ment ***,the devices meet the specifications when ope rating at -120℃ in 6 × 6 binned frame transfer science *** se rial charge transfer inefficiency degrades with temperature in full frame *** any charge losses are recovered when binning/frame transfer is implemented.

Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)is a dominant material in the fabrication of microfluidic devices to generate water-in-oil droplets,particularly lipid-stabilized droplets,because of its highly hydrophobic ***,its key property of hydrophobicity has hindered its use in the microfluidic generation of oil-in-water droplets,which requires channels to have hydrophilic surface *** this article,we developed,optimized,and characterized a method to produce PDMS with a hydrophilic surface via the deposition of polyvinyl alcohol following plasma treatment and demonstrated its suitability for droplet *** proposed method is simple,quick,effective,and low cost and is versatile with respect to surfactants,with droplets being successfully generated using both anionic surfactants and more biologically relevant *** method also allows the device to be selectively patterned with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions,leading to the generation of double emulsions and inverted double emulsions.

The unique alpine-living kea parrot Nestor notabilis has been the focus of numerous cognitive studies, but its com- munication system has so far been largely neglected. we examined 2,884 calls recorded in New Zealand＇s Southern Alps. Based on audio and visual spectrographic differences, these calls were categorised into seven distinct call types： the non-oscillating ＇screech＇ contact call and ＇mew＇; and the oscillating ＇trill＇, ＇chatter＇, ＇warble＇ and ＇whistle＇; and a hybrid ＇screech-trill＇. Most of these calls contained aspects that were individually unique, in addition to potentially encoding for an individual＇s sex and age. Additionally, for each recording, the sender＇s previous and next calls were noted, as well as any response given by conspecifics. we found that the previous and next calls made by the sender were most often of the same type, and that the next most likely pre- ceding and/or following call type was the screech call, a contact call which sounds like the ＇kee-ah＇ from which the bird＇s name derives. As a social bird capable of covering large distances over visually obstructive terrain, long distance contact calls may be of considerable importance for social cohesion. Contact calls allow kea to locate conspecifics and congregate in temporary groups for social activities. The most likely response to any given call was a screech, usually followed by the same type of call as the ini- tial call made by the sender, although responses differed depending on the age of the caller. The exception was the warble, the kea＇s play call, to which the most likely response was another warble. Being the most common call type, as well as the default response to another call, it appears that the ＇contagious＇ screech contact call plays a central role in kea vocal communication and social cohesion [Current Zoology 58 （5）： 727-740, 2012].

β-Secretase (BACE1 or β-site APP cleaving enzyme) is an acid protease that releases the neurotoxic 40 - 42 residue peptides (β-amyloid or A-β) from its glycoprotein precursor, (APP or amyloid precursor protein) which when released in brain is thought to give rise to cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. Most structural studies on β-secretase have previously been performed with recombinant forms of the protease, in which the transmembrane coding region has been deleted. However, interactions with proteins of the same species are best studied using the full-length β-secretase as interactions are likely to be influenced by the hydrophobic nature and localization of its transmembrane regions. Here we develop a multi-step purification procedure that isolates a complex containing BACE1 from recombinant human cells using mild detergents in a procedure that retains other proteins within the complex and remains active in its β-site APP cleaving activity. Some of these proteins, eg reticulon 4, are identified by proteomics, and are known by previous studies performed by others to regulate the activity of BACE1 against APP. These interactions may aid the development of small proteins and peptides that could inhibit the release of aggregated forms of β-amyloid, and thus be useful therapeutically.

Tourniquets are commonly used in penile surgery to achieve a bloodless operating field or produce artificial erections intraoperatively. Several techniques have been described, but there is a paucity of data and a lack of guidelines to direct their safe use. In penile surgery, it is the local rather than systemic effects of tourniquet use that are the main concern. Tourniquet time should be kept to a minimum, as the limited data available suggests that reperfusion injury can occur even after short periods of ischaemia. High risk groups such as diabetics and arteriopaths are at particular risk. Further studies are needed to determine safe tourniquet times and pressures.
