Probing shock geom.try via the charge to m.ss ratio dependence of heavy ion spectra from.m.ltiple spacecraft observations of the 2013 Novem.er 4 event

In large Solar Energetic Particle （SEP） events, ions can be accelerated at coronal m.ss ejection （Cm.）-driven shocks to very high energies. The spectra of heavy ions in m.ny large SEP events show features such as roll-overs or spectral breaks. In som. events when the spectra are plotted in term. of energy/nucleon, they can be shifted relative to each other to m.ke the spectral breaks align. The am.unt of shift is charge to m.ss ratio （Q/A） dependent and varies from.event to event. This can be understood if the spectra of heavy ions are organized by the diffusion coefficients （Cohen et al. 2005）. In the work of Li et al. （2009）, the Q/A dependence of the scaling is related to shock geom.try when the Cm.-driven shock is close to the Sun. For events where m.ltiple in-situ spacecraft observations exist, one m.y expect that different spacecraft are connected to different portions of the Cm.-driven shock that have different shock geom.tries, therefore yielding different Q/A dependence. In this work, we exam.ne one SEP event which occurred on 2013 Novem.er 4. We study the Q/A dependence of the energy scaling for heavy ion spectra using helium. oxygen and iron ions. Observations from.STEREO-A, STEREO-B and ACE are exam.ned. We find that the scalings are different for different spacecraft. We suggest that this is because ACE, STEREO- A and STEREO-B are connected to different parts of the shock that have different shock geom.tries. Our analysis indicates that studying the Q/A scaling of in-situ particle spectra can serve as a powerful tool to rem.tely exam.ne the shock geom.try for large SEP events.

Characteristics of HIV Infected Patients with Biopsy Diagnosed Spongiotic Derm.titis

Purpose. Twenty-six HIV patients with biopsy diagnosed spongiotic derm.titis (SD) were studied to determ.ne their dem.graphic and clinical characteristics. The condition was also investigated to determ.ne if it was linked to the im.une reconstitution inflam.atory syndrom. (IRIS). m.thods. All patients whose skin biopsies were diagnosed by a pathologist as SD were identified. m.dical records were reviewed to extract dem.graphic descriptors, viral loads and CD4+ counts at the tim. that SD occurred. In an attem.t to determ.ne if the condition could be linked to Im.une Reconstitution Syndrom. (IRIS), the tim. from.nadir CD4+ count to the occurrence of SD was determ.ned. Results. SD patients were found to be older than expected but were sim.lar to other clinic patients with regard to race/ethnicity and gender. CD4+ counts, viral loads were not related to SD. SD did not seem.to be related to IRIS because few cases occurred within the tim. fram. associated with IRIS. SD frequently appeared on the lim.s although the literature suggests a m.re frequent appearance on the trunk and buttocks. Discussion. HIV clinicians m.y expect to see SD on occasion and it m.y appear in unusual body sites and at any tim. during the course of the infection.

A Case of Cytom.galovirus-Induced Arthritis after Lym.hocyte-Depleting Therapy for Kidney Allograft Rejection

Cytom.galovirus virem.a and tissue-invasive disease are com.on after kidney transplantation. Chem.prophylaxis has m.de substantial im.rovem.nt in this clinical problem. Here we report a 29-year-old wom.n who had kidney allograft rejection and received lym.hocyte-depleting therapy. She presented with a new oligo-arthritis that led to 2 successive arthrocenteses. The etiology of the inflam.ation could not be determ.ned initially. On the second arthrocentesis, a synovial fluid cytom.galovirus polym.rase chain reaction test was positive. The patient responded to treatm.nt with valganciclovir, had negative follow-up serum.cytom.galovirus polym.rase chain reaction tests, and experienced resolution of her joint inflam.ation. We review briefly the data for cytom.galovirus chem.prophylaxis, preem.tive screening, and treatm.nt recom.endations.

The switch from.skotom.rphogenesis to photom.rphogenesis is a key developm.ntal transition in the life of seed plants. While m.ch of the underpinning proteom. rem.deling is driven by light-induced changes in gene expression, the proteolytic rem.val of specific proteins by the ubiquitin-26S proteasom. system.is also likely param.unt. Through m.ss spectrom.tric analysis of ubiquitylated proteins affinity-purified from.etiolated Arabidopsis seedlings before and after red-light irradiation, we identified a num.er of influential proteins whose ubiquitylation status is m.dified during this switch. We observed a substantial enrichm.nt for proteins involved in auxin, abscisic acid, ethylene, and brassinosteroid signaling, peroxisom. function, disease resistance, protein phosphorylation and light perception, including the phytochrom. （Phy） A and phototropin photoreceptors. Soon after red-light treatm.nt, PhyA becom.s the dom.nant ubiquitylated species, with ubiquitin attachm.nt sites m.pped to six lysines. A PhyA m.tant protected from.ubiquitin addition at these sites is substantially m.re stable in planta upon photoconversion to Pfr and is hyperactive in driving photom.rphogenesis. However, light still stim.lates ubiquitylation and degradation of this m.tant, im.lying that other attachm.nt sites and/or proteolytic pathways exist. Collectively, we expand the catalog of ubiquitylation targets in Arabidopsis and show that this post- translational m.dification is central to the rewiring of plants for photoautotrophic growth.
