Calcium production and the stellar evolution of first-generation stars remain fascinating mysteries in *** one possible nucleosynthesis scenario,break-out from the hot carbon–nitrogen–oxygen(HCNO)cycle was thought to be the source of the calcium observed in these oldest ***,according to the stellar modeling,a nearly tenfold increase in the thermonuclear rate ratio of the break-out ^(19)F(p,γ)^(20) Ne reaction with respect to the competing ^(19)F(p,α)^(16) O back-processing reaction is required to reproduce the observed calcium *** performed a direct measurement of this break-out reaction at the China Jinping underground *** measurement was performed down to the low-energy limit of E_(c.m.)=186 keV in the center-of-mass *** key resonance was observed at 225.2 keV for the first *** a temperature of approximately 0.1 GK,this new resonance enhanced the thermonuclear ^(19)F(p,γ)^(20) Ne rate by up to a factor of≈7.4,compared with the previously recommended NACRE *** is of particular interest to the study of the evolution of the first stars and implies a stronger breakdown in their“warm”CNO cycle through the ^(19)F(p,γ)^(20) Ne reaction than previously *** break-out resulted in the production of the calcium observed in the oldest stars,enhancing our understanding of the evolution of the first stars.

We present a strategy for the design of ferromagnetic materials with exceptionally low magnetic hysteresis,quantified by *** this strategy,we use a micromagnetic algorithm that we have developed in previous research and which has been validated by its success in solving the“Permalloy Problem”—the well-known difficulty of predicting the composition 78.5%Ni of the lowest coercivity in the Fe–Ni system—and by the insight it provides into the“Coercivity Paradox”of ***,the design strategy predicts that cubic materials with large saturation magnetization ms and large magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant κ_(1) will have low coercivity on the order of that of Permalloy,as long as the magnetostriction constantsλ_(100),λ_(111)are tuned to special *** explicit prediction for a cubic material with low coercivity is the dimensionless number(c_(11)−c_(12))λ_(100)^(2)/(2_(κ_(1)))=81 for〈100〉easy *** results would seem to have broad potential application,especially to magnetic materials of interest in energy research.

Seismic performance of steel MRF building with nonlinear viscous dampers

This paper presents an experimental study of the seismic response of a 0.6-scale three-story seismicresistant building structure consisting of a moment resisting frame （MRF） with reduced beam sections （RBS）, and a frame with nonlinear viscous dampers and associated bracing （called the DBF）. The emphasis is on assessing the seismic performance for the design basis earthquake （DBE） and maximum considered earthquake （MCE）. Three MRF designs were studied, with the MRF designed for 100%, 75%, and 60%, respectively, of the required base shear design strength determined according to ASCE 7-10. The DBF with nonlinear viscous dampers was designed to control the lateral drift demands. Earthquake simulations using ensembles of DBE and MCE ground motions were conducted using the real-time hybrid simulation method. The results show the drift demand and damage that occurs in the MRF under seismic loading. Overall, the results show that a high level of seismic performance can be achieved under DBE and MCE ground motions, even for a building structure designed for as little as 60% of the base shear design strength required by ASCE 7-10 for a structure without dampers.

A Cilia-inspired Closed-loop Sensor-actuator Array

Cilia are finger-like cell-surface organelles that are used by certain varieties of aquatic unicellular organisms for motility, sensing and obj ect manipulation. Initiated by internal generators and external mechanical and chemical stimuli, coordinated undulations of cilia lead to the motion of a fluid surrounding the organism. This motion transports micro-particles towards an oral cavity and provides motile force. Inspired by the emergent properties of cilia possessed by the pond organism P. caudatum, we propose a novel smart surface with closed-loop control using sensor-actuators pairings that can manipulate objects. Each vibrating motor actuator is controlled by a localised microcontroller which utilises proximity sensor information to initiate actuation. The circuit boards are designed to be plug-and-play and are infinitely up-scalable and reconfigurable. The smart surface is capable of moving objects at a speed of 7.2 millimetres per second in forward or reverse direction. Further development of this platform will include more anatomically similar biomimetic cilia and control.

Intracellular Transport of Plant Viruses： Finding the Door out of the Cell

Plant viruses are a class of plant pathogens that specialize in movement from cell to cell. As part of their arsenal for infection of plants, every virus encodes a movement protein （MP）, a protein dedicated to enlarging the pore size of plasmodesmata （PD） and actively transporting the viral nucleic acid into the adjacent cell. As our knowledge of intercellular transport has increased, it has become apparent that viruses must also use an active mechanism to target the virus from their site of replication within the cell to the PD. Just as viruses are too large to fit through an unmodified plasmodesma, they are also too large to be freely diffused through the cytoplasm of the cell. Evidence has accumulated now for the involvement of other categories of viral proteins in intracellular movement in addition to the MP, including viral proteins originally associated with replication or gene expression. In this review, we will discuss the strategies that viruses use for intracellular movement from the replication site to the PD, in particular focusing on the role of host membranes for intracellular transport and the coordinated interactions between virus proteins within cells that are necessary for successful virus spread.

Ductility demands on buckling-restrained braced frames under earthquake loading

Accurate estimates of ductility demands on buckling-restrained braced frames(BRBFs)are crucial to performance-based design of *** analytical study on the seismic behavior of BRBFs has been conducted at the ATLSS Center,Lehigh University to prepare for an upcoming experimental *** analysis program DRAIN-2DX was used to model a one-bay,four-story prototype BRBF including material and geometric *** buckling- restrained brace(BRB)model incorporates both isotropic and kinematic *** static pushover and time- history analyses were performed on the prototype *** objectives for the BRBs were defined and used to evaluate the time-history analysis *** emphasis was placed on global ductility demands and ductility demands on the *** demands were compared with anticipated ductility *** analysis results,along with results from similar previous studies,are used to evaluate the BRBF design provisions that have been recommended for codification in the United *** results show that BRB maximum ductility demands can be as high as 20 to *** demands significantly exceed those anticipated by the BRBF recommended *** from the static pushover and time- history analyses are used to demonstrate why the ductility demands exceed those anticipated by the recommended provisions. The BRB qualification testing protocol contained in the BRBF recommended provisions is shown to be inadequate because it requires only a maximum ductility demand of at most *** to the testing protocol are recommended.

Highly faceted geometries such as nanowires are prone toform self-formed features,especially those that are driven by *** these features is important in preventing their formation,understanding their effects on nanowire properties,or engineering them for *** elemental segregation lines that run along the radii of the hexagonal cross-section have been a common observation in alloy semiconductor ***,in GaAsP nanowires,two additional P rich bands are formed on either side of the primary band,resulting in a total of three segregation bands in the vicinity of three of the alternating *** bands are less intense than the primary band and their formation can be attributed to the inclined nanofacets that form in the vicinity of the *** formation of the secondary bands requires a higher composition of P in the shell,and to be grown under conditions that increase the diffusivity difference between As and ***,it is observed that the primary band can split into two narrow and parallel *** can take place in all six radii,making the cross sections to have up to a maximum of 18 radial segregation *** controlled growth,these features could be exploited to assemble multiple different quantum structures in a new dimension(circumferential direction)within nanowires.

Gold modified cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch catalysts for conversion of synthesis gas to liquid fuels

The addition of Au as a promoter/modifier for alumina supported Co catalyst has been studied by combined in-situ high temperature, high pressure Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） and on-line gas chromatography. The combination of these tools permitted the state of the active catalyst surface to be monitored while following the elution of reaction products during the first 5-7 h on stream of the catalyst. The catalysts under study were a 10%Co/ A1203 and a 2.5%Au/10%Co/A1203. Samples were characterised before use using Raman and temperature programmed reduction （TPR）. During the initial stages of reaction, hydrocarbons were built up on the surface of the catalyst as monitored by FTIR and the nature and amount of these species were assessed in terms of CH2/CH3 ratio and the density of these alkyl fragments by employing absorption coefficients for the individual components. The nature and reducibility of the Co particles were modified by the presence of Au while the later also shifted the CO/ H2 balance by acting as an effective water-gas shift catalyst during the early stages of reaction. This characteristic was lost during reaction as a consequence of redistribution of the two metallic phases.

Case report of acute-on-chronic liver failure secondary to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

Acute liver failure is a rare presentation of hematologic malignancy. Acute on chronic liver failure(ACLF) is a newly recognized clinical entity that describes acute hepatic decompensation in persons with preexisting liver disease. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(DLBCL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL) with increasing incidence in older males, females and blacks. However, it has not yet been reported, to present with acute liver failure in patients with preexisting chronic liver disease due to human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/hepatitis C virus(HCV) co-infection. We describe a case of ACLF as the presenting manifestation of DLBCL in an elderly black man with HIV/HCV coinfection and prior Hodgkin's disease in remission for three years. The rapidly fatal outcome of this disease is highlighted as is the distinction of ACLF from decompensated cirrhosis. Due to the increased prevalence of HIV/HCV co-infection in the African American 1945 to 1965 birth cohort and the fact that both are risk factors for chronic liver disease and NHL we postulate that the incidence of NHL presenting as ACLF may increase.
