A Case Series of Patients with Pancreatic Cancer and Cholangiocarcinoma Treated with <i>nab.lt;/i>-Paclitaxel at a Single Institution

b.ckground: Locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer patients have a poor prognosis with median survival less than 12 months. Nanoparticle alb.min b.und (nab.-paclitaxel is a novel agent that has demonstrated antitumor effects in cancers that overexpress the alb.min b.nding protein SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine), which includes pancreatic cancer. A recent phase III trial comparing nab.paclitaxel and gemcitab.ne to gemcitab.ne alone demonstrated a survival advantage in patients with previously untreated metastatic pancreatic cancer. Here we present our local experience with this drug in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. Methods: Patients treated with nab.paclitaxel for gastrointestinal malignancies at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alb.rta, Canada were identified and these patient’s medical records were interrogated for data. Results: Three patients with pancreatic cancer and two with cholangiocarcinoma have b.en treated with nab.paclitaxel at the Cross Cancer Institute. Three patients achieved stab.e disease, while one had a partial response, and one had progressive disease after the first assessment. Median time to progression was 3.7 months. Median overall survival (OS) was 32.5 months. Median OS from initiation of nab.paclitaxel was 7.2 months. Patients tolerated treatment with nab.paclitaxel well with only one patient requiring treatment modification due to neutropenia. Conclusion: The experience at this single center supports pub.ished evidence that nab.paclitaxel is a safe and effective therapy in pancreatic cancer, b.t also suggests that it may have activity in cholangiocarcinoma, which to our knowledge is the first pub.ished evidence of this in humans.

Spice oils and oleoresins are the major products ob.ained from *** spice oil and oleoresin industry,80%-90%of the b.lk spice is left over as residue which do not find any commercial use or application at present and create disposal *** is highly desirab.e to find a way to utilize Industrial waste for food application and in turn preventing *** interest in health foods and focus on the health b.nefits of dietary fib.e invites the speculation that the spent residue form chilli,cumin,coriander,and pepper after their primary processing could provide a new source of inexpensive dietary fib.e in selected food products,especially in b.kery *** spents are rich in dietary fib.e,protein,vitamins,polyphenols,and vital minerals like calcium,iron,magnesium,zinc essential for many b.dy metab.lic *** dietary fib.e content of the spice spents(44%-62%)are much higher than that of many fruits and *** have b.en made to characterize and incorporate few spice spents,***,chilli,celery,pepper,ginger,and turmeric as novel rich source of functional ingredients in b.kery products(b.scuit,b.ead)which are low in fib.e and protein resulting in higher protein and dietary fib.e-rich *** from food applications,spice spents have also b.en effectively used in the composites for the improvement of tensile strength and thermal stab.lity,as a weedicide and production of b.oactive *** of spice spents in various functional food formulations would b. highly b.neficial for health and also for the environment in reducing pollution.

Oil sands contain a so-called organic rich solids component (ORS), i.e., solids whose surfaces are strongly associated with toluene insolub.e organic matter (TIOM). Typically, humic material is the major component of TIOM. It provides sites for adsorption and chemical fixation of b.tumen. This b.und b.tumen is “unlib.rated”, and considerab.e mechanical or chemical energy may b. required to release it. In order to estab.ish a correlation b.tween b.tumen recovery and ORS content, a few selected oil sands were processed in a b.tch Extraction Unit (b.U). Analysis of the middlings and coarse tailings streams from these tests indicated a relatively constant b.tumen to ORS ratio of 2.8±0.7. This value allows the lib.rated-unlib.rated b.tumen b.lance (LUb.) to b. calculated for any given oil sands. The amounts of b.tumen recovered as primary froth during the b.U experiments are close to the estimated lib.rated b.tumen contents in each case tested. This ob.ervation indicates that the lib.rated-unlib.rated b.tumen calculation is an important quantitative parameter for prediction of b.tumen recovery under specific recovery conditions. Preliminary results indicate that the ORS content of an oil sands may b. estimated from the carb.n content of b.tumen free oil sands solids.

Seaweeds are considered as one of the largest b.omass producers in marine environment that is rich in b.oactive metab.lites and a source of natural ingredients for functional foods. The potential antioxidant activity and the potential inhib.tion of Caco2 cell proliferation, of crude extracts of: Chlorophyta (Ulva lactuca, and Codium tomentosum), Phaeophyta (Cystoseira crinita, Cystoseira stricta, and Sargassum vulgare), and Rhodophyta (Gelidium latifolium, Hypnea musciformis, and Jania rub.ns) were collected from western Lib.an coast and evaluated in vitro. The antioxidant activity was determined b. reducing power and DPPH assays while cell proliferation, morphological changes and the cell cycle arrest were assessed b. MTT, inverted light microscope and flow cytometry methods respectively. The polyphenols and flavonoids rich extracts showed remarkab.e reducing power and antiradical properties. After exposure of Caco2 cells to various concentrations of extracts (50, 100, 150 and 200 μg/mL) especially from b.own algae for 72 h, cell proliferation was reduced significantly. The antiproliferative effect of algae extracts was correlated with their polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Cell cycle analysis further showed that cells were arrested in G phases along with an increment in sub.diploidal cell population (sub.G) after extract application. These results imply that seaweeds which are rich in b.oactive compounds may b. used in anticancer drug research programs. However, further investigations are essential to reveal the molecular mechanisms of the anticancer activities of these algae.

rich b.rn industrial natural gas engines offer b.st in class post catalyst emissions b. using a non-selective catalyst reduction aftertreatment technology. However, they operate with reduced power density when compared to lean b.rn engines. Dedicated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) offers a possib.e pathway for rich b.rn engines to use non-selective catalyst reduction aftertreatment technology without sacrificing power density. In order to achieve b.st in class post catalyst emissions, the precious metals and washcoat of a non-selective catalyst must b. designed according to the expected exhaust composition of an engine. In this work, a rich b.rn industrial natural gas engine operating with dedicated EGR was paired with a commercially availab.e non-selective catalyst. At rated b.ake mean effective pressure (b.EP) the air-fuel ratio was swept b.tween rich and lean conditions to compare the catalyst reduction efficiency and post catalyst emissions of rich b.rn and dedicated EGR comb.stion. It was found that due to low oxides of nitrogen (NOb.xb.) emissions across the entire air-fuel ratio range, dedicated EGR offers a much larger range of air-fuel ratios where low regulated emissions can b. met. Low engine out NOb.xb. also points towards a possib.lity of using an oxidation catalyst rather than a non-selective catalyst for dedicated EGR applications. The location of the NOb.xb.-CO tradeoff was shifted to more rich conditions using dedicated EGR.

Motivated b. the experimental realization of Dicke model in optical cavities, we model an optomechanical system consisting of two-level b.C atoms with transverse pumping. We investigate the transition from normal and inverted state to the superradiant phase through a detailed study of the phase portraits of the system. The rich phase portraits generated b. analytical arguments display two types of superradiant phases, regions of coexistence and some portion determining the persistent oscillations. We study the time evolution of the system from any phase and discuss the role of mirror frequency in reaching their attractors. Further, we add an external mechanical pump to the mirror which is capab.e of changing the mirror frequency through radiation pressure and study the impact of the pump on the phase portraits and the dynamics of the system. We find the external mirror frequency changing the phase portraits and even shifting the critical transition point, thereb. predicting a system with controllab.e phase transition.

Herein,ionomer-free amorphous iridium oxide(IrO_(x))thin electrodes are first developed as highly active anodes for proton exchange memb.ane electrolyzer cells(PEMECs)via low-cost,environmentally friendly,and easily scalab.e electrodeposition at room *** with a Nafion 117 memb.ane,the IrO_(x)-integrated electrode with an ultralow loading of 0.075 mg cm^(-2)delivers a high cell efficiency of ab.ut 90%,achieving more than 96%catalyst savings and 42-fold higher catalyst utilization compared to commercial catalyst-coated memb.ane(2 mg cm^(-2)).Additionally,the IrO_(x)electrode demonstrates superior performance,higher catalyst utilization and significantly simplified fab.ication with easy scalab.lity compared with the most previously reported ***,the remarkab.e performance could b. mainly due to the amorphous phase property,sufficient Ir^(3+)content,and rich surface hydroxide groups in ***,due to the high activity,high cell efficiency,an economical,greatly simplified and easily scalab.e fab.ication process,and ultrahigh material utilization,the IrO_(x)electrode shows great potential to b. applied in industry and accelerates the commercialization of PEMECs and renewab.e energy evolution.

Chemical Composition, Minerals and Antioxidants of the Heart of Date Palm from Three Saudi Cultivars

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition, minerals and antioxidants of heart of date palm from three Saudi cultivars. Moisture (ranged from 80.44% - 82.82%) was the predominant component in the heart date palm. Sukkari cultivar had the highest protein (5.27%) and ash (7.9%) compared to the other two cultivars. Fat was low in the three cultivars. Sucrose was the predominant sugar in the heart date palm and ranged from 7.65% - 20.25%. Potassium was the predominant mineral in the heart date palm and was significantly (p b.at Saif cultivar. Sulfur and chloride were next to potassium in ab.ndance in the three heart date palm cultivars. Total phenols and flavonoids were higher in Solleg compared to the other two cultivars. IC50 for Solleg, Sukkari and Nab.at Saif were 0.12, 0.13 and 0.29 mg/ml, respectively. The results of the present study may highlight the potential importance of heart of date palm as a product rich in essential minerals and antioxidants. Future researches are needed to explore other characteristics of heart of date palm which could b. considered for human nutrition.
