Several novel cobalt dichloride complexes with amino-phosphine bidentate ligands were synthesized and *** some of them single crystals were obtained and their molecular structure was determined by X-ray diffraction *** the complexes were then used in combination with MAO for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene,obtaining polymers with different structures(i.e.,predominantly 1,2 or cis-1,4)mainly depending on the type of ligand and on the MAO/Co molar *** behavior of these novel catalysts was compared with that exhibited,in the polymerization of the same monomer,by the systems CoCl_(2)(PR3)2-MAO and CoCl_(2)(PRPh2)2-MAO(R=alkyl or cycloalkyl group),and by the systems based on cobalt dichloride complexes with various bi-and tridentate ligands(e.g.,diphosphines,bis-imines,pyridyl-imines,bis-iminopyridines).The comparison between the different systems allowed us to make some clarity about the actual and effective role played by the various types of ligands in the polymerization of conjugated dienes with catalytic systems CoCl_(2)(L)-MAO,in which L=mono-,bi-,or tri-dentate ligand.

AIM:To evaluate fecal calprotectin concentrations(FCCs) in subjects with chronic gastritis and the correlation between FCCs and gastritis activity ***:FCCs were measured in 61 patients with histological diagnosis of gastritis and in 74 healthy *** grading of gastritis was performed according to the updated Sydney gastritis *** were subdivided into 2 groups according to the presence/absence of an active *** with chronic active gastritis were divided into 3 subgroups on the basis of the activity score(mild,moderate,marked).FFCs in relation to Helicobacter pylori(***) infection and proton pump inhibitor(PPI) use were also ***:FCCs in patients with chronic active gastritis were not significantly different to FCCs either in subjects with non active gastritis or in healthy *** patients with chronic active gastritis(even marked),FCCs did not significantly differ according to activity *** significant differences in FCCs were found when considering ***,as well as when considering PPI chronic ***:FCCs were not significantly increased in subjects with chronic gastritis,even in those patients with a marked neutrophil infiltration.

The recognition of p-glucans by dectin-1 has been shown to mediate cell activation, cytokine production and a variety of antifungal responses. Here, we report that the functional activity of dectin-1 in mucosal immunity to Candida albicans is influenced by the genetic background of the host. Dectin-1 was required for the proper control of gastrointestinal and vaginal candidiasis in C57BIJ6, but not BALB/c mice; in fact, the latter showed increased resistance in the absence of dectin-1. The susceptibility of dectin-l-deficient C57BL/6 mice to infection was associated with defects in IL-17A and aryl hydrocarbon receptor-dependent IL-22 production and in adaptive Th I responses. In contrast, the resistance of dectin- 1-deficient BALB/c mice was associated with increased IL-17A and IL-22 production and the skewing towards Thl/Treg immune responses that provide immunological memory. Disparate canonical/ noncanonical NF-KB signaling pathways downstream of dectin-1 were activated in the two different mouse strains. Thus, the net activity of dectin-1 in antifungal mucosal immunity is dependent on the host＇s genetic background, which affects both the innate cytokine production and the adaptive Th1/Th17 cell activation upon dectin-1 signaling.

Cocoa Powder as Delivery Medium for Probiotic Lactobacillus Strains

Three Lactobacillus strains previously isolated from artisanal Italian cheeses and identified by species-specific PCR as L. helveticus, L. paracasei and L. rhamnosus, were evaluated for the presence of functional traits, such as acidifying activity, cell surface hydrophobicity, antibiotic resistance, survival in low pH and in presence of bile salts, in comparison with two commercially available probiotic strains (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and L. rhamnosus GG). Subsequently, with the aim to develop a new non-dairy functional product, cocoa powder was used as a medium for incorporating freeze-dried cultures of each tested strain and survival at different time/temperature conditions was investigated. The results obtained demonstrated that artisanal dairy products are interesting sources of new probiotic strains;in particular, the dairy origin strain L. rhamnosus showed a good probiotic performance and the highest level of survival during storage. Finally, we showed that cocoa powder represents a good delivery medium for lactobacilli: it could be considered a novel functional food exhibiting high antioxidant power and presenting probiotic potential.

To the Editor: In the last decade, next-generation sequencing(NGS)-based molecular profiling has shed light on the molecular landscape of biliary tract cancer(BTC), revealing the presence of several potentially actionable mutations [1]. According to Clinical ***, there are at least 40 phase I to IV ongoing trials aimed at evaluating the role of targeted treatments in BTC, as monotherapy or in combination with other anticancer agents [2]. Early encouraging results have been observed with therapies targeting IDH mutations, FGFR fusions, HER family and, more recently, BRAF mutations [3].

BACKGROUND： The use of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy（LDP） increased in the past twenty years but the real diffusion of this technique is still unknown as well as the type of centers（high or low volume） in which this procedure is more frequently *** SOURCE： A systematic review was performed to evaluate the frequency of LDP in Italy and to compare indications and results in high volume centers（HVCs） and in low volume centers（LVCs）.RESULTS： From 95 potentially relevant citations identified, only5 studies were included. A total of 125 subjects were analyzed, of whom 95（76.0%） were from HVCs and 30（24.0%） from *** mean number of LDPs performed per year was 6.5. The mean number of patients who underwent LDP per year was 8.8in HVCs and 3.0 in LVCs（P0.001）. The most frequent lesions operated on in HVCs were cystic tumors（62.1%, P0.001） while,in LVCs, solid neoplasms（76.7%, P0.001）. In HVCs, malignant neoplasms were treated with LDP less frequently than in LVCs（17.9% vs 50.0%, P〈0.001）. Splenectomy was performed for non-oncologic reason frequenter in HVCs than in LVCs（70.2%vs 25.0%, P0.004）. The length of stay was shorter in HVCs than in LVCs（7.5 vs 11.3, P0.001）. No differences were found regarding age, gender, ductal adenocarcinoma treated, operative time, conversion, morbidity, postoperative pancreatic fistula,reoperation and margin ***： LDPs were frequently performed in *** ＂HVC approach＂ is characterized by a careful selection of patients undergoing LDP. The ＂LVC approach＂ is based on the hypothesis that LDPs are equivalent both in short-term and long-term results to laparotomic approach. These data are not conclusive and they point out the need for a national register of laparoscopic pancreatectomy.

Cystic dystrophy of the duodenal wall is a rare form of the disease which was described in 1970 by French authors who reported the presence of focal pancreatic disease localized in an area comprising the C-loop of the duodenum and the head of the ***-man authors have defined this area as a"groove".We report our recent experience on cystic dystrophy of the paraduodenal space and systematically review the data in the literature regarding the alterations of this space.A MEDLINE search of papers published between 1966 and 2010 was carried out and 59 paperswere considered for the present study;there were 19 cohort studies and 40 case *** majority of patients having groove pancreatitis were middle *** age was significantly higher in patients having groove *** diagnosis of cystic dystrophy of the duodenal wall can now be assessed by multi-detector computer tomography,magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic *** latter two techniques may also add more information on the involvement of the remaining pancreatic gland not involved by the duodenal malformation and they may help in differentiating"groove pancreatitis"from "groove adenocarcinoma".In conclusion,chronic pan-creatitis involving the entire pancreatic gland was present in half of the patients with cystic dystrophy of the duodenal wall and,in the majority of them,the pan-creatitis had calcifications.

BACKGROUND An altered (dysbiosis) and unhealthy status of the gut microbiota is usually responsible for a reduction of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentration. SCFAs obtained from the carbohydrate fermentation processes are crucial in maintaining gut homeostasis and their determination in stool samples could provide a faster, reliable and cheaper method to highlight the presence of an intestinal dysbiosis and a biomarker for various gut diseases. We hypothesize that different intestinal diseases, such as celiac disease (CD), adenomatous polyposis (AP) and colorectal cancer (CRC) could display a particular fecal SCFAs’ signature. AIM To compare the fecal SCFAs’ profiles of CD, AP, CRC patients and healthy controls, using the same analytical method. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we defined and compared the SCFAs’ concentration in fecal samples of 9 AP, 16 CD, 19 CRC patients and 16 healthy controls (HC). The SCFAs’ analysis were performed using a gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry method. Data analysis was carried out using Wilcoxon ranksum test to assess pairwise differences of SCFAs’ profiles, partial least squaresdiscriminate analysis (PLS-DA) to determine the status membership based on distinct SCFAs’ profiles, and Dirichlet regression to determine factors influencing concentration levels of SCFAs. RESULTS We have not observed any difference in the SCFAs’ amount and composition between CD and healthy control. On the contrary, the total amount of SCFAs was significantly lower in CRC patients compared to HC (P = 0.044) and CD (P = 0.005). Moreover, the SCFAs’ percentage composition was different in CRC and AP compared to HC. In detail, HC displayed higher percentage of acetic acid (P value = 1.3 × 10-6) and a lower amount of butyric (P value = 0.02192), isobutyric (P value = 7.4 × 10-5), isovaleric (P value = 0.00012) and valeric (P value = 0.00014) acids compared to CRC patients.
