The use of green infrastructure and irrigation in the mitigation of urban heat in a desert city

severe urban heat,a prevalent climate change consequence,endangers city residents ***-based mitigation strategies are commonly employed to address this ***,the Middle East and North Africa are under investigated in terms of heat mitigation,despite being one of the regions most vulnerable to climate *** study assesses the feasibility and climatic implications of wide-scale implementation of green infrastructure(GI)for heat mitigation in Riyadh,saudi Arabia—a representative desert city characterized by low vegetation coverage,severe summer heat,and *** research forecasting model(WRF)is used to simulate GI cooling measures in Riyadh’s summer condition,including measures of increasing vegetation coverage up to 60%,considering irrigation and vegetation types(tall/short).In Riyadh,without irrigation,increasing GI fails to cool the city and can even lead to warming(0.1 to 0.3℃).Despite irrigation,Riyadh’s overall GI cooling effect is 50% lower than GI cooling expectations based on literature meta-analyses,in terms of average peak hour temperature *** study highlights that increased irrigation substantially raises the rate of direct soil evaporation,reducing the proportion of irrigation water used for transpiration and thus diminishing ***,water resource management must be tailored to these specific considerations.

single-emitter super-resolved imaging of radiative decay rate enhancement in dielectric gap nanoantennas

High refractive index dielectric nanoantennas strongly modify the decay rate via the Purcell effect through the design of radiative *** to their dielectric nature,the field is mainly confined inside the nanostructure and in the gap,which is hard to probe with scanning probe *** we use single-molecule fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy(smFLIM)to map the decay rate enhancement in dielectric GaP nanoantenna dimers with a median localization precision of 14 *** measure,in the gap of the nanoantenna,decay rates that are almost 30 times larger than on a glass *** comparing experimental results with numerical simulations we show that this large enhancement is essentially radiative,contrary to the case of plasmonic nanoantennas,and therefore has great potential for applications such as quantum optics and biosensing.

Comparing leaf area index estimates in a Mediterranean forest using field measurements, Landsat 8, and sentinel-2 data

Background Leaf area index（LAI） is a key indicator for the assessment of the canopy's processes such as net primary production and evapotranspiration. For this reason, the LAI is often used as a key input parameter in ecosystem services' modeling, which is emerging as a critical tool for steering upcoming urban reforestation strategies. However, LAI field measures are extremely time-consuming and require remarkable economic and human resources. In this context, spectral indices computed using high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery like sentinel-2 and Landsat 8, may represent a feasible and economic solution for estimating the LAI at the city scale. Nonetheless, as far as we know, only a few studies have assessed the potential of sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data doing so in Mediterranean forest ecosystems. To fill such a gap, we assessed the performance of 10 spectral indices derived from sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data in estimating the LAI, using field measurements collected with the LI-COR LAI 2200c as a reference. We hypothesized that sentinel-2 data, owing to their finer spatial and spectral resolution, perform better in estimating vegetation's structural parameters compared to Landsat *** We found that Landsat 8-derived models have, on average, a slightly better performance, with the best model（the one based on NDVI） showing an R2of 0.55 and NRMsE of 14.74%, compared to R2of 0.52 and NRMsE of 15.15% showed by the best sentinel-2 model, which is based on the NBR. All models were affected by spectrum saturation for high LAI values（e.g., above 5）.Conclusion In Mediterranean ecosystems, sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data produce moderately accurate LAI estimates during the peak of the growing season. Therefore, the uncertainty introduced using satellite-derived LAI in ecosystem services' assessments should be systematically accounted for.

Interferometric method to estimate the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian two-level optical system

Non-Hermitian physics has found a fertile ground in optics. Recently, the study of mode coalescence, i.e., exceptional points, has led to the discovery of intriguing and counterintuitive phenomena. Degeneracies are typically modeled through the coupled mode theory to determine the behavior of eigenstates and eigenvalues. However,the complex nature of the eigenvalues makes their characterization from the response spectrum difficult. Here,we demonstrate that a coherent interferometric excitation allows estimation of both the real and imaginary parts of the eigenvalues. We study the clockwise and counter-clockwise modes in optical microresonators both in the case of Hermitian and non-Hermitian intermodal coupling. We show the conditions by which a resonant doublet,due to the dissipative coupling of counter-propagating modes caused by surface roughness backscattering, merges to a single Lorentzian. This permits us to estimate the optimal quality factor of the microresonator in the absence of modal coupling caused by backscattering. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a taiji microresonator working at an exceptional point shows a degeneracy splitting only in one propagation direction and not in the other. This follows from the strongly non-Hermitian intermodal coupling caused by the inner s-shaped waveguide.

Perovskite oxides offer tremendous potential for applications in information storage and energy conversion,owing to a subtle interplay between their spin,charge,orbital and lattice degrees of ***,we further expand the possible range of perovskite oxides operation towards the fields of thermal management and thermal computing by exploiting an exceptional synergy between different ferroic *** propose dynamical control of the heat flow in a distinctive family of perovskite oxides obtained via the application of small electric(~10 kV/cm)and/or magnetic(~1 T)*** on first-principles simulations,we predict a relative heat conductivity variation of~100%in srMnO_(3) thin films near room temperature resulting from a phase transition that involves huge changes in both the magnetization and electric *** disclosed giant multiphononic effects are fundamentally caused by anharmonic spin-phonon couplings that strongly influence the mean lifetime of phonons.

Biaxial versus uniaxial strain tuning of single-layer Mos_(2)

strain engineering has arisen as a powerful technique to tune the electronic and optical properties of twod imensional semiconductors like molybdenum disulfide(Mos_(2)).Although several theoretical works predicted that biaxial strain would be more effective than uniaxial strain to tune the band structure of Mos_(2),a direct experimental verification is still missing in the *** we implemented a simple experimental setup that allows to apply biaxial strain through the bending of a cruciform polymer *** used the setup to study the effect of biaxial strain on the differential reflectance spectra of 12 single-layer Mos_(2)flakes finding a redshift of the excitonic features at a rate between-40 meV/%and-110 meV/%of biaxial *** also directly compare the effect of biaxi al and uniaxial strain on the same single-layer Mos_(2)finding that the biaxial strain gauge factor is 2.3 times larger than the uniaxial strain one.

DICE:An open-source MATLAB application for quantification and parametrization of digital outcrop model-based fracture datasets

An open-source MATLAB application(app)named Discontinuity Intensity Calculator and Estimator(DICE)was developed in order to quantitatively characterize the fractures,or in more general,discontinuities within a rocky outcrop in three-dimensional(3D)digital data,such as digital outcrop model(DOM).The workflow proposed for the parametrization of the discontinuities consists of the following steps:(1)Analysis and mapping of the fractures detected within the 3D DOMs;(2)Calculation of the orientation,position and dimensions of discontinuities that are represented by best-fit circular planes;(3)Determining the discontinuity parameters(dimension,distribution,spacing and intensity)by the DICE algorithm using different 3D oriented sampling techniques(3D oriented scanline,3D oriented circular scan window and spherical scan volume).Different sampling methods were bench tested with a synthetic,as well as a natural case study,and compared in order to understand the advantages and limitations of each *** 3D oriented circular scan window appears to be the most effective method for fracture intensity estimation with high accuracy(error 0.4%)and stability with variations in scan radius.

Weighted‑indexed semi‑Markov model:calibration and application to financial modeling

We address the calibration issues of the weighted-indexed semi-Markov chain(WIsMC)model applied to high-frequency financial ***,we propose to automate the discretization of the price returns and the volatility index by using four different approaches,two based on statistical quantities,namely,the quantile and sigma discretization,and two derived by the application of two popular machine learning algorithms,namely the k-means and Gaussian mixture model(GMM).Moreover,by comparing the Bayesian information criterion(BIC)scores,the GMM approach allows for the selection of the number of states of returns and *** application to Bitcoin prices at 1-min and 1-s intervals shows the validity and usefulness of the proposed discretization *** particular,GMM discretization is well suited for highfrequency returns,whereas the quantile approach works better for low-frequency ***,by comparing the results of the Monte Carlo simulation,we show that the WIsMC model,applied with the proposed discretization,can reproduce the longrange serial correlation of the squared returns,which is typical of the financial markets and,in particular,the cryptocurrency market.
