Aims The coastal Brazilian rainforest on white-sand(restinga)ranks among the most fragmented forest types in the tropics,owing to both the patchy distribution of sandy soils and widespread coastal development *** we study the environmental and evolutionary determinants of a forest tree assemblage at a single restinga forest in Southeastern *** also explore the ability of competing hypotheses to explain the maintenance of species diversity in this forest type,which includes contrasting extremes of edaphic conditions associated with flooding *** The study was conducted in a white-sand forest permanent plot of 10.24 ha on the coastal plain of Southeastern *** plot was divided into 256 quadrats of 20×20 m,which were classified into two main edaphic habitats(flooded and drained).Trees with a diameter≥1 cm at breast height were *** assembled DNA sequence data for each of the 116 morphospecies recognized using two chloroplast markers(rbcL and matK).A phylogenetic tree was obtained using the maximum likelihood method,and a phylogenetic distance matrix was produced from an ultrametric *** analyzed similarity in floristic composition and structure between habitats and related them to cross-plot distances using permutation *** model torus shift simulations were performed to obtain a statistical significance level for habitat association for each *** phylogenetic structure for the two habitats and for each 20×20 m quadrat was calculated using the mean phylogenetic distance weighted by species abundance and checked for significance using the standardized effect size generated by 5000 randomizations of phylogenetic tip *** Findings Our results indicate that partitioning among edaphic habitats is important for explaining species distributions and coexistence in restinga *** distributions within the plot were found to be non-random:there was greater floristic similarity within than betwe

During the last two decades,partial discharges(PDs)modelling methods have been used as a complement of insulation diagnosis systems of electrical ***-element-analysis models for simulating PDs in cavities within solid dielectric materials are reviewed and a novel model is presented,which combines the main advantages of electrostatic and electric current *** theoretical background is presented and some limitations and restrictions are discussed.A case of study was implemented for three different ageing conditions and simulation results exhibit good agreement with reported values by other authors in the *** analysis of variations of PD behaviour with ageing as a function of temperature and pressure is briefly *** is concluded that more research is needed to include physical and chemical interactions on the void surface and that the cavity surface conductivity plays a fundamental role in the PD simulations at advanced ageing conditions.

Background:Excitotoxicity is a mechanism of foremost importance in the selective motor neuron degeneration characteristic of motor neuron *** therapeutic strategies are an unmet need for these ***,such as quercetin and resveratrol,are plant-derived compounds that activate sirtuins(SIRTs)and have shown promising results in some models of neuronal death,although their effects have been scarcely tested in models of motor neuron ***:In this work we investigated the effects of quercetin and resveratrol in an in vivo model of excitotoxic motor neuron death induced by the chronic infusion ofα-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid(AmPA)into the rat spinal cord *** and resveratrol were co-infused with AmPA and motor behavior and muscle strength were assessed daily for up to ten ***,animals were fixed and lumbar spinal cord tissue was analyzed by histological and immunocytological ***:We found that the chronic infusion of AmPA[1 mm]caused a progressive motor neuron degeneration,accompanied by astrogliosis and microgliosis,and motor deficits and paralysis of the rear *** infusion ameliorated AmPA-induced paralysis,rescued motor neurons,and prevented both astrogliosis and microgliosis,and these protective effects were prevented by EX527,a very selective SIRT1 *** contrast,neither resveratrol nor EX527 alone improved motor behavior deficits or reduced motor neuron degeneration,albeit both reduced ***:These results suggest that quercetin exerts its beneficial effects through a SIRT1-mediated mechanism,and thus SIRT1 plays an important role in excitotoxic neurodegeneration and therefore its pharmacological modulation might provide opportunities for therapy in motor neuron disorders.

Big data is a concept that deals with large or complex data sets by using data analysis tools(e.g.,data mining,machine learning)to analyze information extracted from several sources *** data has attracted wide attention from academia,for example,in supporting patients and health professionals by improving the accuracy of decision-making,diagnosis and disease *** research aimed to perform a Bibliometric Performance and Network Analysis(BPNA)supported by a Scoping Review(SR)to depict the strategic themes,thematic evolution structure,main challenges and opportunities related to the concept of big data applied in the healthcare *** this goal in mind,4857 documents from the Web of Science covering the period between 2009 to June 2020 were analyzed with the support of ScimAT *** bibliometric performance showed the number of publications and citations over time,scientific productivity and the geographic distribution of publications and research *** strategic diagram yielded 20 clusters and their relative importance in terms of centrality and *** thematic evolution structure presented the most important themes and how it changes over ***,we presented the main challenges and future opportunities of big data in healthcare.

An interrogation sensor system combining the “figure-of-eight” fiber loop mirror using a single directional 3×3 fiber optic coupler was proposed. One fiber loop mirror was formed by inserting a length of high birefringent optical fiber at the input ports of the 3×3 coupler. Splicing the output ports of the 3×3 coupler between them created the other fiber loop mirror. The introduction of this second loop gave rise to two polarization states of light with the same frequency but different optical phase. The mechanical torsion sensing head was located at the second loop and was exhibited an average modulus torsion sensitivity of 7.9×10−4 degree/dB. The performance of the sensor was not affected by environmental temperature variations.

The FAIR principles were received with broad acceptance in several scientific ***,there is still some degree of uncertainty on how they should be *** self-report questionnaires have been proposed to assess the implementation of the FAIR ***,the FAIRmetrics group released 14,general-purpose maturity for representing ***,these metrics were conducted as open-answer ***,these metrics have been implemented into a software that can automatically harvest metadata from metadata providers and generate a principle-specific FAIRness *** so many different approaches for FAIRness evaluations,we believe that further clarification on their limitations and advantages,as well as on their interpretation and interplay should be considered.

Almost 110 years after the first studies by Dr. Carlos Chagas describing an infectious disease that was named for him, Chagas disease remains a neglected illness and a death sentence for infected people in poor countries. This short review highlights the enormous need for new studies aimed at the development of novel and more specific drugs to treat chagasic patients. The primary tool for facing this challenge is deep knowledge about the similarities and differences between the parasite and its human host.
